Secrets of Story Telling for Speakers – 10X Your Speaking Business with Douglas Vermeeren

Secrets of Storytelling for Speakers

According to Douglas Vermeeren Storytelling is one of the most important skills a speaker can develop. Storytelling is the most important part of connection and engagement. It makes you real and relatable. It is what allows people to see your authenticity. Storytelling is also considered one of the most powerful skills you can have when selling form the stage. The power of storytelling cannot be underestimated. I love storytelling. (Can you tell?)

One of the reasons I love story telling is I love stories. I love hearing them, writing them and watching them. I love them so much that’s actually what I studied in school. (Yes, that’s true I didn’t go to school to actually become a speaker. Doug Vermeeren went to become a filmmaker and my studies focused on screenwriting. You’ve seen some of my work already in The Opus, The Gratitude Experiment and my latest movie The Treasure Map. I’ve written many other non-personal development stories including award winning comic books, tv pilots and other movies. Betcha didn’t know that about me.)

Anyways, I believe in the importance of storytelling. And it’s a powerful tool that every speaker needs. I believe in it so much that I have prepare a special session that will give you some immediate tools to build powerful stories in your presentations. Much of this information I have learned from some of the most powerful storytellers in Hollywood in my film classes.

Most speakers don’t know this stuff — but it will make your stories more powerful, more engaging and eliminate a lot of stuff that makes most stories boring.

Here are some quick tips:

  1. Remember that every story needs a clear beginning, middle and end.
  2. Eliminate needless details and distractions that take people away from the clear storyline.
  3. Find a moral or point to the story before starting. (Sometimes called a theme.) If you don’t know it before you start your listeners will never find it.
  4. A story isn’t jsut telling what happened, it’s returning to what happened. If you relive it vividly in your mind and become emotionally attached your audience will find it easier to connect too.
  5. Every story should have a turning point. In other words a major moment of decision that takes the protagonist from the distress to victory. It must be decision not something lucky that just happens. (We don’t cheer when mother nature or chance saves the day.)

That’s enough for now. Getting ready to offer a special session on story telling PM me if you want to know more. http://www.DouglasVermeeren.com

Are You Building Your Speaking Business Correctly?

Are you building your speaking business correctly?
By Douglas Vermeeren 10X Your Speaking Business

10X Your Speaking Business Douglas Vermeeren are you right?

Over the last 2 decades Douglas Vermeeren have had a chance to seriously observe hundreds of speakers emerging in todays marketplace. Some of them have been quite successful and other seemed to struggle along or quickly became stagnant ed in their career. The vast majority fall into the second category.

The majority of speakers struggle to build their businesses and find more opportunities to speak. As a result they also seem to be on the brink of financial struggle all the time.

As most speakers claim to teach and share tools that are supposed to improve your situation I would say that this failure of their own constitutes a massive failure.

The failing however upon close examination isn’t always connected to their content or their ability to deliver it from the stage. Many of these failing speakers are excellent speakers and have great content.

The challenge comes down to how they’ve structured (or technically not structured) their speaking business. They lack the elements to make their speaking business work.

And there isn’t really anywhere for them to learn this. I have been involved in most of the professional associations for speakers and it’s not there. It’s basically broke speakers teaching other speakers how to do the same.

It is for this reason that Doug Vermeeren created 10X Your Speaking Business. While this article isn’t about me I should tell you why I’m qualified to create such a program:

FINANCIAL SUCCESS
In my first 6 months as a speaker I create a 7 figure business and have never looked back.

RELATIONSHIP POWER
I have joint ventured and created projects where some of the top speakers in the business have supported me. I am the producer of 3 of the top 10 personal development movies of all time. (With support from Bob Proctor, Jack Canfield, John Demartini, Mark Victor Hansen, Joe Vitale, Marci Shimoff, Marie Diamond, John Gray, Bob Doyle, Morris Goodman, Mary Morrissey and many other top thought leaders.)

PRODUCT SALES
I know the formula for creating products, workshops and trainings that sell.

INTERNATIONAL SPEAKING GIGS
I have spoken to audiences all around the world. I was even awarded the distinction of youngest Visiting professor at the Wu Zhai University in China. I regularly speak today on nearly every continent on the globe. (The only ones I’ve missed are really bizarre – like who wants to speak in Antarctica?)

MY STUDENTS ARE SUCCESSFUL
Those that have used my tools have exponentially grown their speaking business. I have students that range from beginning speakers all the way to well known celebrities. I have taught (and still teach) Olympians, movie starts, top musicians, business leaders and my favourite speakers with a brilliant message.

If you are ready to get your speaking business figured out correctly I look forward to having a conversation with you. Here’s a link for some free resources to get you started http://www.DouglasVermeeren.com

Are you a speaker looking to grow your business? Here’s two quick tips for you.

By Douglas Vermeeren, 10X Your Speaking Business

10X Your Speaking Business Douglas Vermeeren level up

I have been a speaker for more than a decade now. (actually maybe even closer to two) and I have seen a few things along the way. Some of these strategies for growing your speaking business have been awesome and some not so great. Recently I was asked by one of my students what is the absolute best way to grow your speaking business and I had two specific ideas come to mind. Here they are:

1) Remember that your business is connection

Most speakers follow a very traditional approach where they prepare their presentation and then present. Their presentation if you follow them around for a while is basically the same no matter who, where or when they are presenting. And believe it or not this is not just a beginner mistake. I was recently at an event with a very well-known speaker who you would certainly know. I have shared the stage with him multiple times before and guess what each time (including this time – which is ten years since the first time I shared the stage with him) his presentation is identical to every other time I have seen him speak. Naturally there were others in the audience who had heard him before who probably also noticed. All the jokes, stories and points he shared were exactly where they were last time. Did he connect with his audience? NOPE. I have to give it a great big fat fail. Connection is what keeps your audience coming back and also staying connected between talks too. (More on this in another post, but for todays purposes I’m am just going to stress that you need connection or your speaking business will not survive.)

2) Leveraging authority and relationships

The second point in these two steps has helped me to grow my speaking business faster than any other idea. I call this one leveraging authority or relationships. It is quite simple actually. When I first started as a speaker (and you might be here right now) no one knew my name. And because I was so new and invisible no one really cared either. It was difficult to get speaking gigs on my own and even more difficult if I was hosting my own event to get people to come. Quite by accident I was invited to share the stage with some speakers who were well known. (If my memory serves me correctly it was Brian Tracy and Jack Canfield.) Now those two guys are very well know internationally and excellent speakers. being part of the event with them immediately increased my credibility and contributed to my database. You can imagine I was also able to use the marketing that featured me with those guys in many of my future marketing. here’s a link actually to an early TV commercial that had Jack Canfield, myself and another speaker. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1AutPT4HCk

Leveraging authority has helped me grow my brand quickly and powerfully. One of the things that also really helped was I acquired tickets for many of the groups or individuals I knew would hire me to speak but had never heard of me. Naturally they would have to sit through me to get to someone like Brian or Jack. This strategy was great for getting me booked.

Anyways, I am sure I will share much more on these two points and others in the future but for today there are a few things to think about.

Do You Want to get more speaking gigs? – By Douglas Vermeeren, 10X your Speaking Business – Part 1

Getting more gigs is the most common thing that I hear speakers ask about. In this brief post I want to clarify one thought that most speaker don’t think about. When it comes to speaking gigs one of the first things that I learned in my speaking business was that not all speaking gigs are created equal.

Do you really want more speaking gigs? Or do you want the ones that are going to have your ideal audience? If you are going to run a successful speaking business speaking more is really not the goal. It becomes a questions of understanding that you want quality rather than quantity.

When I first started I would speak to any group for any reason. Not only did this not produce the results (financially and otherwise) that I was looking for but it also hurt my brand.

There was in fact one event that after I had finished speaking I actually felt the audience dislike me. It was a charity event that I tried to sell to the audience. (Remember that Kelly, Christian and Jordan.) It was painful. And actually quite inappropriate. Had I the ability to do it again I would be more sensitive. More on this learning experience later.

I have had the opposite happen as well. A perfect group who perfectly connected with my message. The results was £280,000 in sales of my services. And here’s the funniest thing that actually makes it my highest conversion of a single room. There were only 6 attendees. (Jason Parker still smiles when he remembers being in the room.)

Take some time to really think about who your best audience is before you go on the hunt for speaking events and you will find your success comes much faster.

PART 1 – Done.

Douglas Vermeeren become a speaker tools

I love being a speaker. I have been a speaker for more than a decade and a half. Yes, I started way way back in the 1990s. (Late 90’s mind you) But it feels like forever ago. I have loved every minute of it. Not only have I met some incredible people, but I have had a chance to see and do some incredible things.

Oprah

The incredible people have been awesome and inspiring. I can’t calculate how exciting and amazing it has been to meet some of these people. My life has literally been changed by some of them.  In the future I will certainly do a post to share some of the incredible lessons from these people and the amazing blessings some of them have brought into my life.

I have

business. I want to be clear though its not all play time. There is a lot of hard work, but

13346563_10154998864094012_1480692136446703866_n

when you learn how to work hard in the right way you also do the get the benefits that will come which means when it’s time to play you get unspecified-3to play.

Some of my play time as a speaker has created some of the memorable life moments and experiences that have shaped who I am, how I think and see the world. The world has gotten so much bigger and intimate at the same time.

IMG_3043

Any ways, the purpose of this short post is simply to say that if you are a speaker yet you have not yet expanded to become an international speaker you must. With an organized and valuable business not only will you bless the lives of others, but your own life will experience some massive expansion as well.

And it’s amazing that this expansion also continues once I’m home in terms of relationship with my loved ones (who I get to spend lots of time with. If you follow me on Facebook you’ll see I am done work quite early most days and spend my time in the park enjoying an abundant family life – who wouldn’t want that!?!)

IMG_0922_2

This is why its so important that you need to not only create great content as a speaker – you need to have the right business structures in place so that you can be free to live your life to the fullest!

Keep Speaking!!!!

Why most “speaker trainers” can’t help you grow your business?

Why most speaker trainers can’t help you grow your business?

By Douglas Vermeeren

3573-frank_warren_-_2_-_june_2013-1024x654Recently I have noticed that there are more and more speakers who are including in their business offerings the ability to teach other speakers how to grow their business. This trend includes teaching new speakers how to craft a “signature” talk, present or “rock” the stage, speak internationally,  or grow your non-speaking business by incorporating public talks into your marketing strategies. While most of these ideas are good concepts to grow your business those presenting them are not able to get you to the results you need. And here’s why:

  • Most of those who are representing themselves as speaker trainers currently have never achieved success themselves. (You will never rise higher than the person teaching you. If they have never cleared 6 figures neither will you.)
  • Most have added speaker training to the their business because they aren’t making enough money elsewhere. (If a person is a speaker trainer they shouldn’t be offering other things. The idea of “Jack of all trades master of none” applies here.)
  • Many of those teaching speaking are teaching outdated practices. (The concept of a  “signature talk” hasn’t worked since the 1990’s. Most speakers are not paid a fee to present a “signature” talk in today’s market. the only ones that actually use these today are celebrities, athletes and politicians.)
  • Most of the speaker trainers today don’t know or teach anything about the business part of speaking. (Most focus on presentation skills, which is okay. But the presentation is only a fraction of the speaking BUSINESS. If you don’t have the business part figured out you won’t be speaking for long no matter how polished your presentation is.

The speaking business is one of the most competitive professions in the world. If you are going to rise to professional levels in this business you will need support. So if you are looking for a speaker trainer what should you look for? The first thing you need to establish are your specific goals as a speaker and what you are hoping to accomplish in your speaking business.  I recommend setting goals and getting clarity in the following areas: (And then before hiring a speaker trainer ask if this person has the experience to help you get there. when I say experience they should actually be doing it themselves. If they aren’t doing it they won’t be able to give that set of skills to you either.)

What niche do you want to be recognized in? (Does this trainer have experience in helping speakers to position people like you in that niche.)

Do you want to be thought of as a competent leader in your niche? What does that mean? (Each niche has a set of rules on how they find and position their leaders. If the speaker trainer you are thinking of working with isn’t the leader in their arena they don’t know a thing about positioning. What will they be able to teach you?)

What does your business model look like? (does this trainer understand what business models are currently working in today’s marketplace. In a recent training in London, UK my students and I identified nearly 250 business models for the modern speaker. Most people today teach on average 2 -3. Yikes!!!)

What would an effective customer funnel look like for you speaking business? (Again most speaker trainers today don’t understand the importance of a funnel. The bottom line is that if you don’t have a predictable path for your student then you won’t have any. No student = broke.)

What product, workshops or services will you offer, what will you charge and where will you put them in your funnel? (Most speakers feel like maybe they want to have a book. Books used to have power and authority but with he over saturation of print on demand companies no one places prestige on having a book any more. Everyone has one. They mean very little nowadays. There are many products better than books. Having said that there are some cases where books still work. But they don’t work well for everyone. I should also mention that products correctly created sell themselves and also position you as an expert – if you have the right product.)

How often do you want to speak? Getting speaking gigs is one of the most important aspects of your business. If you are not speaking you are not a speaker.  Make sure you select a speaker trainer who understands the 5 kinds of speaking gigs available to you in todays marketplace and that they know how to find these.

Joint Venturing with other speakers is one of the fastest ways to grow your business today. Who do you want to share the stage with and how will you get there. Is the speaker trainer you want to work with connected enough to help you get those joint ventures? Have they done enough of them to know how they work?

How will you get an audience to continue the relationship with you? Many refer to this part as selling from the stage. Selling from the stage is an important part of this business, but continuing the relationship can be done in many ways. In addition it is important to recognize that there are many different ways to sell from the stage. Some of the those ways will work better with your personality. Most speaker trainers today fail in the sense that they only know, practice and teach their way. They create clones of who they are and their selling style doesn’t work for everyone. You need to find and develop your style so that its effective and comfortable.

How will you create excitement around yourself in an oversaturated industry? In a world where there are too many speakers, coaches and trainers how will you stand out and make yourself valuable and visible? One of the essentially that speaker trainers need to understand today is how to use media to position themselves. This includes traditional media like TV, radio, print and also includes social media. (Truthfully many in the upcoming generation are wizards at social media. But social media is only part of the equation. Social media is quickly becoming just noise. Alone it isn’t going to give you the results you need.)

There are many other thoughts I share with my students to consider before they decide on who they want helping them build their speaking business. But one thing I always ask them to consider is this: THIS IS YOUR SPEAKING BUSINESS. GET THE VERY BEST PEOPLE HELPING YOU. THERE IS NO SENSE LEARNING HOW TO DO IT WRONG.

Speaking is a business. And if you are serious about that business you need to get serious about who you have helping you.

I have been training speakers for years. I have been able to show them how in my first six months as a speaker I was able to generate over 7 figures. I have been able to show them how to get more speaking gigs. JV with some of the top leaders in the business today. I have shown them how to speaker internationally. I have shown them how to get on TV, radio and print. And I have shown them a multitude of others things that are needed for a successful speaking business that most do not even know about.

One of the first things you should do to improve your speaking career in 2017 – Douglas Vermeeren, The Speaking Business Multiplier

One of the first things you should do to improve your speaking career in 2017

Douglas Vermeeren, The Speaking Business Multiplier

When it comes to a new year everyone is thinking about fresh beginnings, resolutions and setting goals for how they want their life and business to look in the upcoming year. most of the speakers that I come into contact with are setting goals about how many stages they’d like to speak on, which new products they are going to launch, maybe even declaring goals to speak in far away countries that they’ve never visited yet and many are even thinking about how they will increase their income. While these are all valuable and exciting things to think about there is something that I think will help build your speaking business more than any other business goal, product launch or world tour…

Would you like to know what it is? If you’ve been following me for any length of time you know how I believe that the foundation of everything in your speaking business will come back to creating powerful content.  But there is a part of creating powerful content that is often overlooked. If you get this part right then everything else in your speaking business, including the content will come together more easily and all the goals that you’ve been thinking about will fall more easily into place. Well, enough of the suspense. Here it is:

You need to get talking to your audience. In specific you need to connect with individuals in your audience. You first goal will be to discover what challenges they are currently struggling with and which ones they foresee coming in the year. You need to be able to identify how you can best be of service and how your skills, knowledge and tools will best benefit the marketplace.

Some of the key ways I do this in my business are the following:

11219646_10153683373454804_2387624971824876664_n

1)I start with my most profitable and loyally clients. Those that are most profitable for you and most loyal are the audience members you want to keep with you. They are also the kind of people you want to duplicate in your business. It’s a simple reflection of the Pareto principle or the 80/20 rule. You don’t need to or ant to serve everyone. You need to find and nurture those who are best positioned to help your business grow. By focusing on the leaders in your tribe you can get the best sense of the needs of the tribe. Your leaders are dialled in and as pioneers they know what’s really going on. If you haven’t identified them that’s your first bit of homework. You need to explore such questions as:

What are their goals for 2017?

What were the biggest challenges of 2016? And what are you doing about it?

What changes are happening for you that will effect your marketplace?

Who are the emerging leaders this year in your industry? Why?

What are the important issues facing you and your business this year?

What is the new products, services and tools you are bringing to market?

What will you need to learn to do that successfully?

What efforts worked really well last year that you will duplicate again?

What efforts did not work?

Naturally these seem like very business oriented connections and I’m sure many of my students who are more focused on the healing arts and heartfelt teachings are thinking that these questions will never work with my people. That may be true but you can always create variations of these questions. Especially when working with individuals who are trying to gain clarity to begin with.

Even those in the healing modalities have clear goals and can identify many of the needs they are trying to solve.

Back to the business conversation for a second. I have found that my top students that I want to interview appreciate these kinds of explorative conversations and questions a lot. In fact, when I am asking for the interview I position it as a strategy session where they will gain and at the same time I am able to do my research.

dstroyer-4086

2) Survey the group. In addition to one on one conversations to discover what my top students are wanting to learn and receive support with I share a survey with my first few audiences of the year and often I will even send out the survey to those in my database. (I actually create a contest for people to get them back to me.) The surveys work really well.

Here’s an example on one I use:

Spekaing Business Multiplier survey.jpg

speaking-business-multiplier-survey-back

I find that by using a survey especially at the beginning of my events has been very valuable. In addition to helping me gather information it also works as a teaching to tool to get my students thinking about things they need in their business. (But that’s another conversation) For now I want to point out something which you’ve already discovered by a quick look through. It gives me an idea of what students want to learn more about, what they’ve spent over the last while, what they are willing to spend and more. I encourage you to create your own surveys to use to get to know your audience better.  (By the way if you go to my Youtube channel there is a really short video on some additional benefits of using a survey. Check it out.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZ3FpuXGieM )

businessman playing chess game selective focus

3)Talk to your competitors. This may sound crazy but one of the most valuable tools I use in understanding my audience is to look at what my competition is doing and also talk with them. I have a relatively positive relationship with nearly all of my competitors and the one thing I have noticed without variation is that they love to talk about their business and tell me what their doing. Maybe its a feeling that they want to let me know they are smarter than me, doing better than me, more unique than me or whatever. That’s okay. I love them telling me about what they are up to and often it confirms I am on the right track or gives me new ideas or reveals things that they may be missing that I can take advantage of. I am sure they feel the same way that I do when they talk with me. I don’t want this paragraph to sound like I am trying to be engage in corporate espionage. Truthfully these discussion are often more of a collaboration that an investigation. But I am always paying very close attention. How are your relationships with your competitors? If you are afraid to boldly call them up at least add them as friends on Facebook and you can see what they are doing.

(And I never worry about competition because MASTERY = MONOPOLY and I know most of the other people training speaking are doing other stuff on the side. That’s the secret of why I’m getting such high rating everywhere. This is ALL I focus on. )

All in all the purpose of this post is to really help you understand the importance of dialling into the conversation of what your audience really wants, what’s happening in your marketplace and to help you recognize any areas you should be focusing on this year. If you can uniquely fill a void, deliver high value and service your audience better than anyone else all the other stuff that I spoke about in the first paragraph of this article most speakers thinking about will fall into place.

Speakers Must do this if they are to be successful in 2017- Douglas Vermeeren, The Speaking Business Multiplier

Speakers Must do This if they are to be successful in 2017

By Douglas Vermeeren, The Speaking Business Multiplier

Over the years I have spent time with a lot of people wanting to grow a business in the speaking or coaching industry. More often than not those individuals remain anonymous and broke. The personal development industry is highly competitive with many people feeling that they have empowerment to offer. Many times they are right- they do have great strategies to offer and they are excellent at delivering their content either on stage or working in groups or with individuals. But these individuals seem to struggle to create a thriving predictable business that provides value long term to their audiences.  Why is that? What mistakes are they making? What is being left out?

Here are a few considerations that you should think about if you are looking to create a sustainable speaking or coaching business:

speaking-training-15

  1. You must get dialled in to the current marketplace conversation – It is essential that know what is being talked about in your niche. You much be aware of the conversation and be able to contribute in meaningful ways. You can’t rely on content or ideas that you were teaching a year ago or even six months ago. What worked yesterday won’t work today. The world is changing faster than ever before. You must know what’s happening now and strive to become a leader int he conversation. If you want to be relevant to your audiences or your students you must know what is relevant. Too many speakers develop a “signature talk” (Which is actually the old way of doing things anyhow) and then they stick to it for years. If you want to be relevant today you need preview sessions which are adaptable to the audience you are interacting with. You must know your content and the marketplace so well that you can be valuable in any setting. We have a saying among my students about content that, If you know i, you can flow it.”  You must spend time each day dialling into the conversation and expanding your content knowledge.o-speaker-business-conference-facebook
  2. You must have an effective business model with a planned sales funnel – Too often less successful coaches and speakers are flying by the seat of their pants. They don’t have a business model other than to speak and get paid or speak and sell. Alone these are also archaic models of what used to work in the 1990s. You need to recognize what business models are being used in your niche market and what others could be implemented by you to work for you. The business of your business is to become profitable. And if you are not profitable you will not get the privilege to continue. Your best business models will begin as you are able to identify where your students and you can create a transaction. The speaking business or coaching business is a business. Transactions are necessary if you are going to stay in business. (More on this later)  As for sales funnels they are essential. You need to know the map of where you are going to take each student. Even if they choose not to go the full distance with you you need to know the route. If you don’t know they will sense it and they will lack confidence in you. (We will talk more about funnels later as well.)Marketing word cloud
  3. Plan to market – The world is like a big library. If you don’t know the name of the book as you come in the door you will often have a hard time finding it. In the same way there may be people looking for you and your content right now but if they have never heard of you or what you do they will never find you. There are many easily accessible and affordable ways to market your speaking or coaching business today it can be very easy if you know how to attract clients through appropriate messaging. The challenge that many speakers have is that they don’t know who they are well enough to share it with others. Try this as an expert: Describe what you do, who you serve and what results they will get inside of one sentence. And ONLY ONE SENTENCE. Can you do it? Most speakers can’t. When you are can describe yourself in terms that are specific and clear, your audience will be attainable and near. Get clarity! The second part of marketing today is not promotion who you are – it’s actually being who you are. People expect you to teach! They want to feel as though you can deliver the results. Personal development marketing today is about building tribes and relationships instead of rushing right into a sale. People expect to get to know you and your content before they will trust you with their money.

As I have taught these 3 strategies along with a few others I have seen my speaker students gain more speaking opportunities, build great following and brand loyalty and witnessed massive expansions in their income. The speaking business is much more strategic than most people realize, but if you know what to do it can be very lucrative.
