2 Things That Keep Speakers From Sharing Their Message

Douglas Vermeeren : Have you ever thought about how many brilliant people there are in the world. (And yes, you are one of them) Each of these people has an important and valuable lesson to share and as these message are shared with each other we can create more abundance, prosperity and advancement in every aspect of human happiness and satisfaction.

However there are many who aren’t sharing their message. In my experience there are two reasons

1) Some people are afraid to speak up and let their voice share their expertise. (That’s inside work)

2) People have a message and they aren’t afraid to share it but they are doing it wrong and so they never get noticed. They stay invisible and never find the people that need their message most. (This is outside work)

What’s the difference between inside and outside work?

Inside work is generally stuff that the individual needs to sort out. Yes, they can get help but it really is stuff they need to overcome.

Outside work is different. That’s the stuff that they can really only fix if they will get help from others like a mentor, coach or support group. Outside work is generally needed when someone has tried everything they know and still gets poor results. Outside work only improves as the individual is confident enough to ask for help and seek out people who can help them be more effective.

Les Brown is a genuinely nice guy. He cares about those he speaks to. He has been through many difficult situaitons in his life and by cultivating a belief in himself he has been able to rise above his challenges and stay motivated in his own life. He has a gift of being able to help people through similar difficulties. In my opinion he is different than many motivational speakers in the simple sense that he does not point you to himself as the source for your answers. Instead he helps you draw upon yourself and the brilliance that we often forget is within us. For this reason alone I recommend this event.

It is important to always remember that people buy emotionally and they back it up logically. Where most speakers fumble the ball is in understanding how to transition effectively from emotion to logic in the purchasing decision process. Most speakers have a clear distinction between their teaching and their pitch and this is where the sales break down occurs with most audiences.

This concept of transition when executed correctly guides the audience to keep the emotional high that got them interested and keeps their momentum high through all steps needed to complete the purchase.

One of the techniques we use in our Secrets of Selling from the Stage program to facilitate this transition is to use transition phrases which guide the audience into a state of logic without compromising the emotion.

One example of these transitional phrases leading into the logical portion of your offering is to start by sharing a date. For example, You’ve just been teaching and the emotional connection with the audience is high. you sense its time to proceed with your offer. You simply shift by saying “On October 16 & 17 I am going to be coming back to this location to teach more on the principles I’ve just shared.” That’s the transition.

So rather than leading with “I am going to do a workshop.” (That’s pitchy and the audience knows the pitch is coming.) or even worse, “I’d like to share an opportunity.” (The audience braces themselves because here comes the ask.)

Instead by starting with the date the audience begins to shift to logic by asking themselves what they re doing on the dates mentioned. After you’ve subtly got them thinking about the logistics of how they will attend you can begin to ease into your offer.

Have you ever heard a speaker that sucked? Of course you have. (I know in the beginning of my career I was often THAT speaker.) Share your thoughts on what makes a speaker successful and what makes them suck. I’m interested to know for a project I am working on and when I share the answers to this you may be surprised.

Here are a few immediate things that people have shared which you want to be careful of:

(And by the way I’ve actually seen all of these happen.)

1. Speaker is unprepared.
2. Speaker shows up late and unprepared.
3. Speakers pass around crinkled up and soiled order forms or handouts
4. They try to sell products that are damaged
5. They make excuses about why they didn’t bring products
6. Too much powerpoint or tech (ie. Videos etc.)
7. Too many high fives, handshakes, hugs and stand up/sit down exercises. (Also dancing without purpose just to dance)
8.Too much text power points
9.Pitching through the entire presentation and no content. (Very desperate)
10. Ego based speech (all about how they did this, that and the other. No audience relevance)
11.A memorized scripted “Signature speech” with no audience connection
12. Cliche phrase. ( I don’t say this impress you, but to impress upon you etc.)
13. Trying to be someone they are not.

Are you a speaker looking to grow your business? Here’s two quick tips for you.

I have been a speaker for more than a decade now. (actually maybe even closer to two) and I have seen a few things along the way. Some of these strategies for growing your speaking business have been awesome and some not so great. Recently I was asked by one of my students what is the absolute best way to grow your speaking business and I had two specific ideas come to mind. Here they are:

 

1) Remember that your business is connection

Most speakers follow a very traditional approach where they prepare their presentation and then present. Their presentation if you follow them around for a while is basically the same no matter who, where or when they are presenting. And believe it or not this is not just a beginner mistake. I was recently at an event with a very well-known speaker who you would certainly know. I have shared the stage with him multiple times before and guess what each time (including this time – which is ten years since the first time I shared the stage with him) his presentation is identical to every other time I have seen him speak. Naturally there were others in the audience who had heard him before who probably also noticed. All the jokes, stories and points he shared were exactly where they were last time. Did he connect with his audience? NOPE. I have to give it a great big fat fail. Connection is what keeps your audience coming back and also staying connected between talks too. (More on this in another post, but for todays purposes I’m am just going to stress that you need connection or your speaking business will not survive.)

 

2) Leveraging authority and relationships

The second point in these two steps has helped me to grow my speaking business faster than any other idea. I call this one leveraging authority or relationships. It is quite simple actually. When I first started as a speaker (and you might be here right now) no one knew my name. And because I was so new and invisible no one really cared either. It was difficult to get speaking gigs on my own and even more difficult if I was hosting my own event to get people to come. Quite by accident I was invited to share the stage with some speakers who were well known. (If my memory serves me correctly it was Brian Tracy and Jack Canfield.) Now those two guys are very well know internationally and excellent speakers. being part of the event with them immediately increased my credibility and contributed to my database. You can imagine I was also able to use the marketing that featured me with those guys in many of my future marketing. here’s a link actually to an early TV commercial that had Jack Canfield, myself and another speaker. Leveraging authority has helped me grow my brand quickly and powerfully. One of the things that also really helped was I acquired tickets for many of the groups or individuals I knew would hire me to speak but had never heard of me. Naturally they would have to sit through me to get to someone like Brian or Jack. This strategy was great for getting me booked.

 

Anyways, I am sure I will share much more on these two points and others in the future but for today there are a few things to think about.
