How is it some speakers can get results? 10X Your Speaking Business Douglas Vermeeren

leave a comment »

10X your speaking business logoOver the years I have had the opporutnity to observe many speakers, coaches, trainers and mentors. It has quickly become apprarent t ome that some of htese people are masters and much more effective at changing lives than others. In fact, I have often been in awe of how they have been able to change peoples lives even with just a few sentences.
How are they able to do it?
While not all of the secrets to their success are easily accessible to all, some quite frankly are inutional things that an article could never teach. But I will expose a few big things that anyone can dial into immediately to improve their ability to lift others.
Connection — Connection with your audience is the first step to any form of influence. Your audience needs to feel like you are intersted in them as individuals. They need to know that you are competent and they can open their hearts and minds to you because you have something valuable to share. They need to feel that you are reachable. (Too many speakers today try to put themselves in a position of authority over their audiences and convince people of their worth through accomplishments and status. This doesn’t work.) Connection is a powerful principle and cannot be sufficiently covered to the depth it deserves in such a short article. I encourgae you to maek the study of connection on of you most important pursuits in your development as a speaker.
Vision of the future — I know this may sound a bit bizaare but in order for anyone to make a change in their life they must have a vision of the future and if they can’t see it you have to see it for them. In other words you have to hold the belief in the vision until they can get it for themselves. Speakers that change people are full of hope and opitimism. Seeing the future includes seeing possibilities and asking your students the right quesitons to help them see the right posisbilities for themselves. This is not something that happens by accident. Many times I have seen people just get stuck because the problems of the day weighed down so heavily that they couldn’t see any other options. freedom is about options and when options apeear there is hope.
Start with something they can do now — Despite what movies, pop culture and people make it look like sometimes change and big results are the results of big events. Big things happen after a series of small things create a tipping point. Often most speakers are not able to create change in their students because they are trying to get them to do big dramatic things. They are on the hunt to share as many “A-ha” moments as they can because it makes them look smart. Results follow action. Action follows activities that can actually be performed. The most powerful speakers start with activities that can be completed, not lofty ideals that are beyond the reach of the student. Ask what can you do, not what could you do.
While there are lots of other things that can be done to help your students, and we will most likley talk about those in future article, I want to challenge you to look for ways to implement these three as listed above. You can go a long way to being a support to your sutdents with just those few points.

Douglas Vermeeren become a speaker tools

I love being a speaker. I have been a speaker for more than a decade and a half. Yes, I started way way back in the 1990s. (Late 90’s mind you) But it feels like forever ago. I have loved every minute of it. Not only have I met some incredible people, but I have had a chance to see and do some incredible things.

Oprah

The incredible people have been awesome and inspiring. I can’t calculate how exciting and amazing it has been to meet some of these people. My life has literally been changed by some of them.  In the future I will certainly do a post to share some of the incredible lessons from these people and the amazing blessings some of them have brought into my life.

I have

business. I want to be clear though its not all play time. There is a lot of hard work, but

13346563_10154998864094012_1480692136446703866_n

when you learn how to work hard in the right way you also do the get the benefits that will come which means when it’s time to play you get unspecified-3to play.

Some of my play time as a speaker has created some of the memorable life moments and experiences that have shaped who I am, how I think and see the world. The world has gotten so much bigger and intimate at the same time.

Any ways, the purpose of this short post is simply to say that if you are a speaker yet you have not yet expanded to become an international speaker you must. With an organized and valuable business not only will you bless the lives of others, but your own life will experience some massive expansion as well.

And it’s amazing that this expansion also continues once I’m home in terms of relationship with my loved ones (who I get to spend lots of time with. If you follow me on Facebook you’ll see I am done work quite early most days and spend my time in the park enjoying an abundant family life – who wouldn’t want that!?!)

This is why its so important that you need to not only create great content as a speaker – you need to have the right business structures in place so that you can be free to live your life to the fullest!

Keep Speaking!!!!

Speakers Must do This if they are to be successful in 2017

By Douglas Vermeeren, The Speaking Business Multiplier

Over the years I have spent time with a lot of people wanting to grow a business in the speaking or coaching industry. More often than not those individuals remain anonymous and broke. The personal development industry is highly competitive with many people feeling that they have empowerment to offer. Many times they are right- they do have great strategies to offer and they are excellent at delivering their content either on stage or working in groups or with individuals. But these individuals seem to struggle to create a thriving predictable business that provides value long term to their audiences.  Why is that? What mistakes are they making? What is being left out?

Here are a few considerations that you should think about if you are looking to create a sustainable speaking or coaching business:

speaking-training-15

  1. You must get dialled in to the current marketplace conversation – It is essential that know what is being talked about in your niche. You much be aware of the conversation and be able to contribute in meaningful ways. You can’t rely on content or ideas that you were teaching a year ago or even six months ago. What worked yesterday won’t work today. The world is changing faster than ever before. You must know what’s happening now and strive to become a leader int he conversation. If you want to be relevant to your audiences or your students you must know what is relevant. Too many speakers develop a “signature talk” (Which is actually the old way of doing things anyhow) and then they stick to it for years. If you want to be relevant today you need preview sessions which are adaptable to the audience you are interacting with. You must know your content and the marketplace so well that you can be valuable in any setting. We have a saying among my students about content that, If you know i, you can flow it.”  You must spend time each day dialling into the conversation and expanding your content knowledge.o-speaker-business-conference-facebook
  2. You must have an effective business model with a planned sales funnel – Too often less successful coaches and speakers are flying by the seat of their pants. They don’t have a business model other than to speak and get paid or speak and sell. Alone these are also archaic models of what used to work in the 1990s. You need to recognize what business models are being used in your niche market and what others could be implemented by you to work for you. The business of your business is to become profitable. And if you are not profitable you will not get the privilege to continue. Your best business models will begin as you are able to identify where your students and you can create a transaction. The speaking business or coaching business is a business. Transactions are necessary if you are going to stay in business. (More on this later)  As for sales funnels they are essential. You need to know the map of where you are going to take each student. Even if they choose not to go the full distance with you you need to know the route. If you don’t know they will sense it and they will lack confidence in you. (We will talk more about funnels later as well.)Marketing word cloud
  3. Plan to market – The world is like a big library. If you don’t know the name of the book as you come in the door you will often have a hard time finding it. In the same way there may be people looking for you and your content right now but if they have never heard of you or what you do they will never find you. There are many easily accessible and affordable ways to market your speaking or coaching business today it can be very easy if you know how to attract clients through appropriate messaging. The challenge that many speakers have is that they don’t know who they are well enough to share it with others. Try this as an expert: Describe what you do, who you serve and what results they will get inside of one sentence. And ONLY ONE SENTENCE. Can you do it? Most speakers can’t. When you are can describe yourself in terms that are specific and clear, your audience will be attainable and near. Get clarity! The second part of marketing today is not promotion who you are – it’s actually being who you are. People expect you to teach! They want to feel as though you can deliver the results. Personal development marketing today is about building tribes and relationships instead of rushing right into a sale. People expect to get to know you and your content before they will trust you with their money.

As I have taught these 3 strategies along with a few others I have seen my speaker students gain more speaking opportunities, build great following and brand loyalty and witnessed massive expansions in their income. The speaking business is much more strategic than most people realize, but if you know what to do it can be very lucrative.

Are you ready for the stage? The Speaking Business Multiplier

leave a comment »

the_speaking_business_multiplier_logo02Over the last two decades I have had a chance to attend countless seminars, workshops, presentations and lectures in personal development, self improvement or some other form of pubic education. As someone who teaches speakers for a living to create successful speaking business and platform skills I have seen “the good, bad and the ugly.” Often times those who fit ingot he bad or the ugly examples have glaring similarities.  Some of them with a little help could become amazing eventually but some need a direct return to the basics or in some cases find a new career option. Here are a few of the big mistakes I see the “bad and the ugly” making that could be fixed or become deal breakers.

1)They don’t prepare – When a speaker isn’t prepared it becomes glaringly obvious and painful to listen to. Just because a person works in a specific field or has some experience in what they are invited to speak about does not mean that they have the skill to explain it from the stage to others. Get prepared with you material and organize it into a presentation that others can understand and grain from. It isn’t just a matter of being educational its also a matter of being entertaining. If its just information we are looking for you might as well just go and read a book. Getting prepared means selecting the ideas and information that is going to be of most use to your audience and then determining the most interesting and effective way to present it. Winging it never works.

(As a side note on preparation most people underestimate the amount of preparation it takes to create a sustainable career as a speaker. You need to be able to do more than just talk. What value are you really adding? And unfortunately there are a lot of people who call themselves speakers who are actually not adding much value at all. Be honest with yourself – You know that you can do better!)

2)They try to share too much – Still following the discussion started above without preparing is the idea that some people prepare too much. Too much information is almost as bad as sharing nothing. The goal of your presentation should be to influence, education and make your audience better. If there is too much information (and irrelevant information) it becomes difficult to act on and therefore becomes useless. Make things  digestible.

Get rid of needless and frivolous fluff in your presentation and everyone will thank you for it.

3)They don’t engage the audience – A professional speaker is different than a university professor.  When you say university professor most people think of a lecture that does not engage or involve the audience. As a speaker you cannot do that. One of the things I encourage my students to do is to create an activity or some form of interaction for every major point they share. The more an audience is involved the more they will retain and want to continue a relationship with you.

4)They go way over their time – One of my mentors and friends made an interesting statement once. Betty Cooper once told me, “You can always tell a professional speaker by their ability to end on time.” Unfortunately many who call themselves speakers are just not at that level yet. In conversations with event organizers over the years this reappears as one of the more common reasons why speakers don’t get invited back. The organizer plans their event and is coordinating so many other activities including lunch breaks, other speakers, activities and more. If you go over even by 10 minutes you can put everything into chaos. Learn how to finish on time.

5)They rely too much on technology – More and more frequently speakers are relying too much on technology especially showing video after video to get their point across. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not against using video or av to get your point across but when your entire speech becomes a multimedia presentation you are no longer a speaker. You are a technician with a remote.  On the note of av one of the other signs of an amateur is someone who hasn’t tested their av and spends the first 10 minutes of their presentation trying to figure out their laptop or projector. If it’s going to be that much of a problem leave it out.

There are a few thoughts for today. Hopefully they are useful.

12 areas profitable speakers get figured out in their business – Douglas Vermeeren

12 Areas you need to figure out if you are going to be a profitable speaker

By Douglas Vermeeren, The Speaking Business Multiplier

The title of Speaking Business Multiplier was given to me by one of my speaking students. It was one thing for me to create success in my own speaking career. We tend to create success for ourselves as a matter of survival. Often those who do amazing things for themselves are not great teachers when it comes to transferring that success to others. But I have figured out some systems that have helped others to do what I have done and help many others get on that path. The student that called me by this title was able to take his business from a steady moderate income comparable to a hobby to a full time career making over 7 figures.

I believe that you can too. Again I’ve seen it many times in the lives of my students and in other speakers around me. If you want to be successful in this business the first thing you need to do is start looking at it like a business.

As I’ve had the chance over the last 10 years or so to speak along side some of the industries top names I have seen many similarities in their business practices. I have also seen the differences in the way they do many things that make their business thrive while others experience difficulty.

img_0690I’ve worked with them and spent quite a bit of time with top speakers privately and behind the scenes. I can tell you where they invest their time and efforts to create results and most of what they do would surprise you. Why? Because you’re not doing it.

(And by the way although that’s Bob Proctor and I in a casino – that’s not where we made our money and work on our speaking business. lol. Although some people run their business by chance. We were in fact just walking through headed but some people don’t know where they are headed in their speaking business.)

Below are some of the core areas I believe need to be thought about and expanded on to create a balanced, sustainable and profitable speaking business.

Which do you think you would like to learn more about:
1)Learning and Preparing valuable content
2)Positioning yourself as an expert
3)building the right kinds of products
4)Building a sales funnel and business structure that works
5)Building an intro or preview session that converts
6)Selling from the stage
7)Finding more speaking opportunities
8)Attracting media coverage
9)Learning how to JV with other top speakers
10)How to use social media and others tools for expert positioning
11)Creating strong brand loyalty
12)Effective business structures and systems for speaking

Do you have these elements in your speaking business? Are they all there ? Are there some that are missing? Do you have questions about how to make some of these elements better?

istock_000022230045mediumOver the next while I’ll go into more detail on some of these activities and provide some practical ideas, concepts and strategies on how you can bring these things into your business and create more success.

Are you prepared to learn?
Speaker_Training_Systems copy 2By Douglas Vermeeren

In thinking about what to write about today I had an interesting experience that brought to my mind something that we never really talk about very often in personal development. I recently attended an event from another speaker where several of the attendees were not prepared to participate. They came in late disrupting the group. One of them had a cellphone in hand finishing a conversation as they entered. Another was completely unprepared to take notes and immediately got up from their chair to hunt the room for a pen and paper.

And the organizer was no better. They had AV troubles from the beginning. There weren’t enough chairs for attendees and people either stood at the back or tried to solve things on their own with the hotel staff. It was a really distracting place to learn. (And the tickets to this event were not inexpensive.)

As I sat in the audience I thought about how these situations could have been avoided and the entire experience improved upon. I thought to myself how odd it was that people invested to be there yet they arrived unprepared. How different is this than other experiences we encounter in life?

If you ordered furniture you’d make space for it. If you paid for a vacation you’d pack a suitcase and bring your passport. Rarely do people miss their flights, in fact most arrive early. So why don’t they do this with seminars they attend?

Rather than share all the answers that I believe I would like to open this topic up for discussion and use this as a platform to gather data so that this reading can prevent this from happening at their own events. Please share your thoughts on why this happens and how to fix it in the comment section.
