Is public speaking as a business dead?

For the last two decades I have been a public speaker. I have seen a lot of changes and most prominently I have seen many new speakers arrive on the scene with the intention to create a massive business sharing their expertise.
More often than not they fail.

This makes me ask: Is public speaking as a business dead or dying?

As I have carefully considered this question and looked at the complete landscape of what is really going on in this highly saturated industry of speaking, coaching, mentoring and personal development in general I have an answer to this question:

The old way of building this business is dying.

While those who understand the nuances of today’s marketplace are not only thriving but building incredible 7 & 8 figure businesses.

If I were summarize a few of the differences between the dying and thriving it would be as simple as this:

The dying are relying on an old model of the speaking business. In other words they are focusing on creating signature speeches, speaking for a fee and doing as many speeches as they possibly can. The thriving understand that building a brand is important and real authentic connection with the audience trumps signature speeches every time.

The dying are always on the hunt for the next event to get in front of an audience.
The thriving understand the platforms available to them to create audiences around them and their content. They understand that once they find their vibe they earn their tribe.

The dying take out ads and do posts on social media focused on telling about themselves and their many accomplishments, constantly inviting you to events or buy products and promoting their latest greatest whatever it is.The thriving understand that today’s market place is value content and relationship driven. The more you give away the more likely you are to attract people who want to learn more.

The dying also don’t understand the important of building relationships with the power players in the business and that reputation helps create brand. The thriving understand that relationships with high level experts is available to them and they understand how to create synergy with people that matter. The dying don’t have a game plan and they often fly by the seat of their pants, taking whatever speaking gigs come their way.

The thriving understand that a business strategy is essential to success in the speaking business and saying no to events that don’t serve your bran is one of the best things you can do.
Anyways, there are a few thoughts for now.

Over the last 2 decades Douglas Vermeeren have had a chance to seriously observe hundreds of speakers emerging in todays marketplace. Some of them have been quite successful and other seemed to struggle along or quickly became stagnant ed in their career. The vast majority fall into the second category.

The majority of speakers struggle to build their businesses and find more opportunities to speak. As a result they also seem to be on the brink of financial struggle all the time.

As most speakers claim to teach and share tools that are supposed to improve your situation I would say that this failure of their own constitutes a massive failure.

The failing however upon close examination isn’t always connected to their content or their ability to deliver it from the stage. Many of these failing speakers are excellent speakers and have great content.

The challenge comes down to how they’ve structured (or technically not structured) their speaking business. They lack the elements to make their speaking business work.

And there isn’t really anywhere for them to learn this. I have been involved in most of the professional associations for speakers and it’s not there. It’s basically broke speakers teaching other speakers how to do the same.

How important is authenticity in public speaking? It didn’t used to be. What used to be important was delivering a “signature” speech and prepared and scripted power point . The information to be shared was the most important. Perhaps you’ve even heard the saying content is KING. Well, not any more.

The most important aspect a speaker can master in todays marketplace is connection and engagement.

Don’t believe me take a look at the social media world (which is a reflection of how conversations take place in real life and how brands are built today.) With the advent of the internet information has reached a point of oversaturation. We have more information and content than we could ever hope to consume in our lifetime. What people are seeking now is to receive that information from those who can show us how to use it in authentic and valuable ways.

In other words what we want is connection. We need to connect with the messenger and we need to see how the content connects to us. Which is also the job of the messenger.

The speaking and coaching industry is one of the fastest growing industries on the planet. But… that doesn’t mean it is the most prosperous for most involved. In fact, most speakers I’ve met over my decades as a speaker are broke. I have been to all kinds of events, speakers conferences, speakers associations (likes CAPS, NSA Global Speakers Federation etc.) and Yes, most speakers are broke. and why?
Simple. They don’t really have a business. The run from one speaking event to trying to find a gig at the next. In between they are lost and struggling. The reason why is they don’t have a business strucutre for their speaking business. most speakers confuse speaking with the business. The truth is you need to put both of these elements together. Speaking + Business = Speaking Business.
Some of the elements that most speakers are missing from their business include: Customer support, Customer management, Customer acquisition, Proper content development within the framework of a business structure, sales funnels, creating proper products, getting speaking gigs, Getting speaking gigs that build your brand and are profitable and so many other quesitons they jsut don’t know how to ask.
My challenge to you: Take some time and seriously look at your speaking business. What do you really have? What systems are actually supporting you? What are you missing? How can you level up? And what needs to happen in order for you to grow?

Over the year as part of several speaker associations I have noticed that there is a big push for members to join a speakers bureau. In fact, there is often a feeling that you haven’t really made it until you have a bureau representing you. While there is a place for bureaus in the speaking business not all speakers will benefit from a connection with a bureau. While this quick article isn’t meant to be an exhaustive discussion on bureau I just wanted to point out a few common mistakes and misconceptions about speaking bureaus to help your speaking business.

 

1) The use speaking bureaus has declined at least 60% in the last five years. This insight has come through my interviews and discussions with several different owners of speaking bureaus over the last year or so. The decline according to some is as high as 80%. The reasons most of them share for the decline all make sense. Including everything from most speakers are now accessible through their own website and event planners often prefer to work directly with the speaker than a third party. Second the economy has put many speakers into the marketplace who will either speaker for free or close to. Many organizations are now creating in house training programs.

 

2)Speaking Bureaus are shifting focus. Because the market in starting to dwindle for companies using speaking bureaus the bureaus have had to level up the talent on their roster. They are no longer interested to take just anyone because their clients are not willing to pay for just anyone. Speaking Bureaus are making a massive shift towards representing celebrities, athletes, politicians and celebrity experts (Top best selling authors, not pseudo best selling authors. I’ll explain more about this later but essential this means self proclaimed best sellers or engineered amazon best sellers.)

 

3)There is a is misconception that if you re with a speaking bureau you will get more speaking gigs. This is not true. Being with a bureau guarantees you nothing. Speaking Bureaus are in business to make money and they focus on those who are generating it for them. If you aren’t already a hot topic you will not be among their favourites. If you really want to get busy as a speaker you will have to create your own opportunities and perhaps the bureaus will become inspired by the buzz you create.

It is important to always remember that people buy emotionally and they back it up logically. Where most speakers fumble the ball is in understanding how to transition effectively from emotion to logic in the purchasing decision process. Most speakers have a clear distinction between their teaching and their pitch and this is where the sales break down occurs with most audiences.

This concept of transition when executed correctly guides the audience to keep the emotional high that got them interested and keeps their momentum high through all steps needed to complete the purchase.

One of the techniques we use in our Secrets of Selling from the Stage program to facilitate this transition is to use transition phrases which guide the audience into a state of logic without compromising the emotion.

One example of these transitional phrases leading into the logical portion of your offering is to start by sharing a date. For example, You’ve just been teaching and the emotional connection with the audience is high. you sense its time to proceed with your offer. You simply shift by saying “On October 16 & 17 I am going to be coming back to this location to teach more on the principles I’ve just shared.” That’s the transition.

So rather than leading with “I am going to do a workshop.” (That’s pitchy and the audience knows the pitch is coming.) or even worse, “I’d like to share an opportunity.” (The audience braces themselves because here comes the ask.)

Instead by starting with the date the audience begins to shift to logic by asking themselves what they re doing on the dates mentioned. After you’ve subtly got them thinking about the logistics of how they will attend you can begin to ease into your offer.

Have you ever heard a speaker that sucked? Of course you have. (I know in the beginning of my career I was often THAT speaker.) Share your thoughts on what makes a speaker successful and what makes them suck. I’m interested to know for a project I am working on and when I share the answers to this you may be surprised.

Here are a few immediate things that people have shared which you want to be careful of:

(And by the way I’ve actually seen all of these happen.)

1. Speaker is unprepared.
2. Speaker shows up late and unprepared.
3. Speakers pass around crinkled up and soiled order forms or handouts
4. They try to sell products that are damaged
5. They make excuses about why they didn’t bring products
6. Too much powerpoint or tech (ie. Videos etc.)
7. Too many high fives, handshakes, hugs and stand up/sit down exercises. (Also dancing without purpose just to dance)
8.Too much text power points
9.Pitching through the entire presentation and no content. (Very desperate)
10. Ego based speech (all about how they did this, that and the other. No audience relevance)
11.A memorized scripted “Signature speech” with no audience connection
12. Cliche phrase. ( I don’t say this impress you, but to impress upon you etc.)
13. Trying to be someone they are not.
