A few secrets to becoming a good public speaker

3573-frank_warren_-_2_-_june_2013-1024x654Often people ask me what’s the secret to becoming a good speaker on stage. I want to clarify I’m not talking about you’re speaking business I’m talking about your presentation skills.

Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to see a lot of speakers and some of them of been very good while others have a lot of work to do still. As I have observed those that are good I have noticed a few common attributes and traits.
Naturally I know behind the scenes the study their content very consistently. I’m not going to spend a lot of time in this post talking about content.

This post is more about presentation of that content. And I believe one of the most important things a person can possess on stage is self confidence in the ability to flow with your content to look as though it’s easy for you.

The first step to having this kind of delivery is the practice everywhere you can. I have long been a believer that a speaker needs to be speaking. That means when no one is hiring you you need to find a events or create them.

I have found the same thing to be true as I have done stand-up comedy. There is no substitute for practice in front of a real live audience. As a speaker you need to find as much of that as you possibly can.

Another important element of being a powerful presenter is to learn how to keep things simple. Too many speakers try to show how clever or smart they are by making things more complex than they need to be. Rather than engaging the audience this type of activity tends to exclude them. Making something appear simple is a lot harder than looks. And quite frankly knowing exactly what to share it something that can only be experienced as you share it with an audience. You can start with what you think will work but it won’t be until you see the lightbulbs go on in the eyes of those who share it with that you’ll know for sure.

And maybe the last point to share here today which I think is the most powerful is that above all you need to learn how to connect with your audience. This can be as simple as learning how to affectively make eye contact, speak with intonation and tonality, use gestures that engage and correct body language. The idea and concept of connection is so important that in the new training I’m doing a presentation skills we spend several hours talking about how you can connect specifically with the audience.

As a preview to the training I want to mention that the most powerful way to connect with audiences is to engage them with questions, exercises and activities. To do these things effectively requires that you know your content so well that you can literally create a conversation from the stage without worrying that someone could hijack what you’re trying to do.

If you are new to speaking I would encourage you to get out there and speak as much as you can. The idea of speaking for free is the fastest way to start becoming good. I am not against speaking for free or even paying to speaking. But there will come a time when you just won’t be able to operate as a business unless you have some way of monetizing these kinds of opportunities. But for now just get out and speak.

This is just a quick note to say thank you to all the wonderful and support people who organized and attended the Best You Expo in London, UK this last weekend. There were so many incredible people who attended and speakers who took the stage. It was an honour and privilege to be among you. I look forward to speaking again at the expo in the future. I’ve included some pictures below from my talk at the expo on the MainStage on Sunday. For those of you who were not able to attend I spoke about some of the things I learned from my interviews with the top achievers I have had the privilege to meet and learn from.  Many of these principles changes my life and helped me to create successes in my own life.

One thing is for certain and that is that life is not always easy and there are often things we want to do that we could use some help with. One of my greatest realizations has been that there are always people there to support you and help you – even when things go wrong and don’t flow smoothly. It’s too often very easy to get sidetracked and discouraged especially when what you want to achieve is massive. It’s also difficult to have people around you who don’t always grasp your vision. It’s difficult to have detractors and people who are jealous. That is why it is so important to surround yourself with those who are interested to help, those who care about you and your success and believe in you.

And while it may not people possible to attract every person in your life to be this way I believe it is possible to attract more goodness than difficulty.

Why most speaker trainers can’t help you grow your business?

3573-frank_warren_-_2_-_june_2013-1024x654Recently I have noticed that there are more and more speakers who are including in their business offerings the ability to teach other speakers how to grow their business. This trend includes teaching new speakers how to craft a “signature” talk, present or “rock” the stage, speak internationally,  or grow your non-speaking business by incorporating public talks into your marketing strategies. While most of these ideas are good concepts to grow your business those presenting them are not able to get you to the results you need. And here’s why:

  • Most of those who are representing themselves as speaker trainers currently have never achieved success themselves. (You will never rise higher than the person teaching you. If they have never cleared 6 figures neither will you.)
  • Most have added speaker training to the their business because they aren’t making enough money elsewhere. (If a person is a speaker trainer they shouldn’t be offering other things. The idea of “Jack of all trades master of none” applies here.)
  • Many of those teaching speaking are teaching outdated practices. (The concept of a  “signature talk” hasn’t worked since the 1990’s. Most speakers are not paid a fee to present a “signature” talk in today’s market. the only ones that actually use these today are celebrities, athletes and politicians.)
  • Most of the speaker trainers today don’t know or teach anything about the business part of speaking. (Most focus on presentation skills, which is okay. But the presentation is only a fraction of the speaking BUSINESS. If you don’t have the business part figured out you won’t be speaking for long no matter how polished your presentation is.

The speaking business is one of the most competitive professions in the world. If you are going to rise to professional levels in this business you will need support. So if you are looking for a speaker trainer what should you look for? The first thing you need to establish are your specific goals as a speaker and what you are hoping to accomplish in your speaking business.  I recommend setting goals and getting clarity in the following areas: (And then before hiring a speaker trainer ask if this person has the experience to help you get there. when I say experience they should actually be doing it themselves. If they aren’t doing it they won’t be able to give that set of skills to you either.)

What niche do you want to be recognized in? (Does this trainer have experience in helping speakers to position people like you in that niche.)

Do you want to be thought of as a competent leader in your niche? What does that mean? (Each niche has a set of rules on how they find and position their leaders. If the speaker trainer you are thinking of working with isn’t the leader in their arena they don’t know a thing about positioning. What will they be able to teach you?)

What does your business model look like? (does this trainer understand what business models are currently working in today’s marketplace. In a recent training in London, UK my students and I identified nearly 250 business models for the modern speaker. Most people today teach on average 2 -3. Yikes!!!)

What would an effective customer funnel look like for you speaking business? (Again most speaker trainers today don’t understand the importance of a funnel. The bottom line is that if you don’t have a predictable path for your student then you won’t have any. No student = broke.)

What product, workshops or services will you offer, what will you charge and where will you put them in your funnel? (Most speakers feel like maybe they want to have a book. Books used to have power and authority but with he over saturation of print on demand companies no one places prestige on having a book any more. Everyone has one. They mean very little nowadays. There are many products better than books. Having said that there are some cases where books still work. But they don’t work well for everyone. I should also mention that products correctly created sell themselves and also position you as an expert – if you have the right product.)

How often do you want to speak? Getting speaking gigs is one of the most important aspects of your business. If you are not speaking you are not a speaker.  Make sure you select a speaker trainer who understands the 5 kinds of speaking gigs available to you in todays marketplace and that they know how to find these.

Joint Venturing with other speakers is one of the fastest ways to grow your business today. Who do you want to share the stage with and how will you get there. Is the speaker trainer you want to work with connected enough to help you get those joint ventures? Have they done enough of them to know how they work?

How will you get an audience to continue the relationship with you? Many refer to this part as selling from the stage. Selling from the stage is an important part of this business, but continuing the relationship can be done in many ways. In addition it is important to recognize that there are many different ways to sell from the stage. Some of the those ways will work better with your personality. Most speaker trainers today fail in the sense that they only know, practice and teach their way. They create clones of who they are and their selling style doesn’t work for everyone. You need to find and develop your style so that its effective and comfortable.

How will you create excitement around yourself in an oversaturated industry? In a world where there are too many speakers, coaches and trainers how will you stand out and make yourself valuable and visible? One of the essentially that speaker trainers need to understand today is how to use media to position themselves. This includes traditional media like TV, radio, print and also includes social media. (Truthfully many in the upcoming generation are wizards at social media. But social media is only part of the equation. Social media is quickly becoming just noise. Alone it isn’t going to give you the results you need.)

There are many other thoughts I share with my students to consider before they decide on who they want helping them build their speaking business. But one thing I always ask them to consider is this: THIS IS YOUR SPEAKING BUSINESS. GET THE VERY BEST PEOPLE HELPING YOU. THERE IS NO SENSE LEARNING HOW TO DO IT WRONG.

Speaking is a business. And if you are serious about that business you need to get serious about who you have helping you.

This is one of the most common questions I get asked from new speakers. What should I do first?

The first thing needed when getting started in the speaking business is to determine what you will be sharing for content and who you will be sharing it with. You need to determine what will be relevant and valuable to your audience and what qualifies you to share with this group. Your efforts in the beginning should be placed on crafting a powerful message. When you feel you have that the next step will be determining how you will share it.

You can build your speech, your business or even design a product until you know what is valuable and relevant to your audience.

Discovering this message is a lot more difficult than it sounds. It can take a lot of research and work to find something that resonates with you and your audience. I encourage you to take your time with this however. As a speaker you must be dedicated to a long term game plan rather than a quick rush to get on the stage and speak. A profitable speaking business requires that you provide value in such a way that people can compensate you.

You can’t provide this kind of value until you understand the conversation surrounding your audience in the marketplace. Take the time to learn this.

One of the most valuable lessons that I learned when building my speaking business was to involve my clients. If I knew what they wanted and were willing to support it was easier to create it. How often are you talking with these people?  Are you implementing their suggestions into your business? Are you bringing their questions into your talk and onto the stage?

To be engaging you must engage.

My social media challenge to you

There are many reasons why people might want to be a coach, trainer or speaker. As I see all the images that many of my speaker friends post on social media it is certainly an exciting life. Many of them post pictures of the books they are writing and the vast audiences they are presenting to. (I’ve done it too.) Many of them are posting pictures of new cars, homes or clothing they’ve purchased. (I’ve done this way too much) Many of them post pictures of famous celebrities they’ve met or where they are in on globe today. (Again I’m guilty) While these pictures are interesting (and I encourage people to keep sharing the things that get them excited) I often wonder why more people (me included) aren’t sharing more about the people they are actually helping and the solutions that they are sharing in the marketplace. Perhaps there are others who could also be helped.

It just seems to me with so many amazing and brilliant leaders in the self improvement industry that we’d see more support and helpfulness than we do. I know many of the top leaders personally and the things they teach are really making a difference for others. I know many others too that quite frankly I couldn’t tell you what they teach. I love them, I respect them, but I think they are capable of more. I already know for almost all of these people its not about getting paid. Spend five minutes with most of the people who have chosen personal development as a career and they are the most kind and giving people you will ever meet – but this isn’t really translating on social media.

I believe that you know what I’m talking about. Rather than create feelings of empowerment and inspiration (which is why most of us chose this path for our life) many of us are leaving a trail of jealousy, comparison and gossip about who really is legit and who is just a poser. Is that really how we want those outside of our industry to feel about this industry? Naturally if that’s the impression we are creating it will effect us too. I am sure you are just like me and you want to provide high value and you do really care about people. I’m not saying we are perfect but I am saying we are genuinely trying our best to give our best.

So here’s my social media challenge to all personal development teachers! Please pass this on too!  MY CHALLENGE TO YOU IS TO START USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO DO SOME ACTUAL TEACHING. And if you’re currently doing it I congratulate you but encourage you to step it up. Teach more! Share more! Give me support and more solutions! Don’t hold back your teachings for a workshop or speech. The world needs you now. I can promise you that the more you share the more people will find a seat in your audiences at your live events. Why? Because they’ll see that you have real solutions and they’ll feel you care.
