Are you Proactive? What difference does it make?

By Douglas Vermeeren

Being proactive or taking responsibility for your actions and choices is the first step towards creating any success in real life. If we avoid responsibility or choose to be reactive to what’s going on around us we actually give away our power. As we give away our power we also lose our ability to create outcomes that are important to us.

When we live in a reactive mode we become paralyzed and our world shrinks. We give up the right make choices as we by default give this power to others.

You can recognize a reactive person by the behaviours and language. Their actions often appear as follows:

They are easily offended

They blame others

They are often highly emotional (Super Highs and Super Lows)

They get angry easily and often

They say hurtful things

They criticize and judge others

They complain

They wait for things to happen

Find themselves often engaged in drama

Change only when they must

Unwilling to learn or follow

They are often financially broke

Paralyzed when problems appear

Always late

Disorganized

Use contention and intimidation as a tool

Don’t own their mistakes

The language they use is often as follows:

I have to

They made me

I must

I can’t

I don’t have the time, monte, opportunity, friends, resources etc.

It happened because of X

Because of these approaches reactive people always find their world shrinking. A shrinking universe is connected to diminishing opportunity and scarcity. You can never have abundance on any level in a setting where scarcity is nurtured.

The good news is that people are neither 100% proactive or reactive. We are all somewhere along a continuum. You are reactive some of the time and proactive some of the time. My encouragement to you is to identify areas where you are reactive and seek for improvement. Even a small degree of improvement will begin to open up more opportunities for choice. More choices simply equals more happiness and success. You’ll also find that taking responsibility sooner and more fully decreases the amount of negative stress in your life. When we take responsibility even for the things we don’t like in our life we immediately gain the power to change those things. You can only change what you choose to own.

Thank you for so many reasons – Why your messages were so important
By Douglas Vermeeren

Happy-Birthday-Fresh-Cake-HD-WallpapersYesterday was my birthday and it was one of the best days ever. I want to thank everyone for your birthday wishes and kind messages. It’s pretty easy to say,“it’s no big deal.” But it really is.

Just like everyone in the world my life doesn’t always go smoothly. Things don’t always go as expected and sometimes life really sucks. There are also times when I have made mistakes and hurt people or have people get mad or frustrated with me. I try my best in life but things can happen. I am sure that you have experienced this in your life too. It can be challenging to attempt to lead an inspiring life and encounter this.

Occasionally when things don’t go well it’s easy to forget the blessings and great people in your life. It’s easy to feel alone.

In admitting this I don’t want anyone to think that I was depressed about my life. I love my life.

Yesterday clarified for me that I was not alone. My Facebook, linkedin, email, home phone, cell phone, voicemail and mail box were all filed with messages of love from friends from around the world. Some of the messages were from places in the world I’d never visited and from people that I was sure would never remember me. One of the calls from a radio station was so random I thought I had missed scheduling a radio interview in my appointment book. every message was received with gratitude and consideration. I felt loved, appreciated and valued. I want to thank everyone.

These messages reignited my desire to do good and be of service to those around me. Many of these messages were from people who claim I touched their lives for good. As I read them I couldn’t help but rededicate myself to the cause of helping people find their brilliance.

Now here’s the message I realized yesterday and I wanted to share today.

If these messages made me feel so loved I wonder why we save messages of love and appreciation for birthdays. How many others around us must be in a funk? How many others (especially among those we love) are feeling alone? How many could use a simple message reminding them they are appreciated?

In this world where we often experience and focus on the negative far more than we deserve shouldn’t we take a minute today and send a few quick positive and encouraging messages.

You never know the good you will do.

Success comes from Habits – Bam #13

Success comes form habits
By Douglas Vermeeren

habits-wordle1

There are many people around us each day who have accomplished a high level of success. We sometimes see them on tv or read about them in best selling books. When we see these people it is not uncommon for us to feel a sense of awe and literally explain “wow!” Often times we may be tempted to look at these individuals and think that they are lucky or somehow endowed with some unique magical attributes that have brought success to them.

By creating this idea that there are skills unique to these individuals it gives us an escape route or rather an exit to be able to excuse ourselves from attempting and accomplishing the same levels of success. While there are certainly unique skills at a high level of success the truth is that they did not arrive in a magical way.

In addition, most of these people were just like you and I at the beginning. They just added one ingredient that made those skills stronger, better and powerful. That one ingredient is to turn the actions they knew they needed to accomplish their desired success into habit.

habit

Habit is the key to creating lasting success. We literally become what we repeatedly think about and do.

make-our-habits

But the answer is not that simple. Developing habits takes hard work, dedication, consistent effort, refining, recommitting when things don’t go well, and staying on track especially when things go right.

Developing the right habits can also be an elusive journey. Once you know what you want to develop as a success in your life how can you determine which habits you need to develop. The Chinese philosopher Confucius declared that the very best way to develop wisdom is to imitate. In modern parlance we call this modelling. If you wish to create success in a specific area you need to find role models who have accomplished success in the same area and duplicate their habits. Developing habits therefore begins with intense study to identify the habits that you will need to create the same success.

Often I encounter people who pick and choose elements of those habits that they will duplicate and other things that the decide are not needed. Maybe the things that they reject they fell are too hard or inconvenient. Maybe they feel like some of those habits will be too difficult to implement or take too much time to develop. What they experience in the end is only partial success. When you pick and choose and decide to do only that which is easy you get less than the result of your mentors.

Imagine if you wanted to be a heart surgeon and you decided to only attend half the classes. In doing so you would rob yourself of the lessons you would need from the entire experience. When developing the habits of success you cannot pick and choose. You have got to become engaged and immersed.

habits

Developing new habits is hard work. Anytime change is required the commitment that comes with those changes is massive. It requires you to literally be obsessed with the new destination. You have got to establish a strong WHY. That WHY must be bold and emotionally charged. We only stay engaged with the activities that have significant meaning to us. Especially when the going gets hard. When you have a powerful and emotionally charged why it is more likely that you will stay on track and continue to practice the habits that will lead you to success.

There is a statement attributed to Michaelangelo. He allegedly said to someone complimenting him as a master, “It you knew how hard I had to work you wouldn’t call me a master.” Whether the event actually happened or the statement is true I can’t say. But what I have noticed as I have worked with top achievers around the world is that the statement is true. Every master started as a disaster. To get to high performance levels much hard work is required.

My challenge to you is to identify several new habits you need to develop in order to start moving towards your most significant goals. Push forward and recognize that habits are also developed in much the same way as turning on a dimmer switch. You aren’t going to get it right all at once but it will get better and better with hard work and dedication! Get started now!

Do you want to achieve more? How did you start your day? BAM #12
By Douglas Vermeeren

All success is a matter of habit. What you repeatedly do determines the outcomes and results you will experience. It’s as simple as that. Or is it?

Most of us know what we want. We also have desires to make our lives better. We also have relatively clear ideas of some of the immediate things that we can do better and need to improve. So what’s keeping us from implementing these elevating ideas and strategies? What’s keeping us from locking the habits of success into our daily routine?

The answer may surprise you.

All success is found in how you start your day. If you own you morning you’ll own your day.

Over the last decade I have had the opportunity to study the lives of more than 400 of the worlds top achievers. Among this group were world class athletes, top business leaders, celebrities and high powered entrepreneurs. As I looked for the elements of success I looked at things both on a macro level (meaning the big picture) but I also was very interested in thing on the micro level (meaning the tiniest of details.)

I am a firm believer that the macro is a composition of the micro and that the biggest successes are found in the smallest moments, decisions and activities. As I tried to find a common denominator among the small details there was one striking feature among all of them.

It was how they started their day. Top achievers and successful people start their day very differently than the average person. I believe this difference sets off a chain reaction that allows them to achieve not only more through out the day – but to achieve the things that add the most progress and advantage to their day as well.

Here’s a list of ten things I noticed about how they start their day.

Early riser – They begin by rising earlier than most. In the early hours of the morning they have solitude to dial into the things that are most important to them without the distractions of the day. It is interesting to notice that those who remain in bed and hit the snooze button to start their day also hold back and hesitate to get actively involved later in the day. Holding back rather than pouncing forward are a habit that starts immediately.

Self work – The top achievers that I observed started the morning by working out both their body and their mind. I recently read a report on how Barack Obama, President of the United States begins his day before any meetings with a 45 minute work out. Oprah Winfrey begins with a morning meditation. Howard Schultz of Starbucks begins the morning with a long walk with his dogs. Exercise and contemplation are both activities that put you in an empowered state for the remainder of the day.

Avoid criticism, negativity or urgency – The world around us has great power to influence us. Often the information, personalities and events we come into contact with first thing in the morning shape how we will view the rest of the day and direct the energy with which we view our circumstances. Top achievers that I observed actually do not start out the day with the news or by checking email. They set their own emotional temperature before they accept the influence of others.

checking-email

Determine their highest priorities and values – Some of the top achievers I studied did this the night before as well and then reviewed it again in the morning. After taking their own time for exercise and reflection the top achievers then reviewed their day and prioritized how it would be spent. They evaluated things not in terms of creating a to do list but by evaluating what needs to be done to move them closer to their big picture goals. They often focused on what they really wanted not just stuff that needed to be completed. Most average people fill their day with habitual activities that don’t move them closer to their goals. They live their day in reaction mode rather than proactively. As a result most people spend their day putting out fires and not accomplishing the things that inspired or encouraged them. Steve Jobs was well-known for asking this question in the morning, “Would I do what I’m about to do if today was last day on earth?” He found if he answered no too often he was on the wrong path.

Steve-Jobs1

How we start our morning is an important part of setting out how our day will move forward. Days are what make up our life. We need to treat each day as a valuable gift. When we use these small units of time as a tool to achieve what’s most important to us we create a live that is powerful and exciting.

How will you start your mornings going forward? Will you change the routines and habits that you currently have? If you do you’ll find that everything will change. So what are you waiting for? Get started!
