Everywhere you look today you can find promises of new products, books or classes that will teach you how to create incredible and immeasurable success. The success they promise may be the changes you want in the areas of increased abundance, improvements in your relationships, optimal health, greater self esteem and even increased spirituality.  While many of these products and programs offer valuable information and insights for creating success they are generally missing something. If you want to create success that will last this final ingredient may be the most important of all.

The success secret that is rarely talked about is kindness.

Although this principle is rarely eluded to in the success library of today it is common in all of the philosophical and religious materials of the world. Variations of the golden rule, to do unto others as you would have them do unto you, appear in the philosophies of almost all religions. The earliest record being that of the ancient Babylonians in a text called the Code of Hammurabi purportedly written in 1780 BCE.

Perhaps, because we have heard it so often we have taken it for granted.

While quick money and easy victories can be made without kindness, only kindness and consideration of others builds a sure foundation. As you do unto others as you would have them do unto you, they generally do it.

You’ve probably heard it said in jest that the golden rule is simply ‘he that has the gold makes the rules.’ But the opposite is actually the truth; he who knows and keeps the golden rule eventually gets to keep the gold.

Kindness allows for relationships of growth and trust. Kindness fosters a spirit of  cooperation and collaboration. Kindness breeds creativity and best results. When we feel that we will be valued and treated with kindness we bring forth our very best. On the other hand, greed and self centeredness cause a business, organization, community, family and even an individual to shrink rather than expand.

You’ve heard the saying that ‘nice guys finish last?’ Nice guys may take longer to build something, but they receive the privilege of being permitted to finish. When you engage in dishonesty or manipulation, you may fool people once but you will rarely get a second chance to do so. Success is about creating something that will last and endure. Something that a mean spirited and self centered person will never get to experience.

Kindness is not just about being cordial, polite and politically correct. It is about being of service, leaving someone better than you found them and improving things wherever you go. Kindness does not mean doing everything for everyone, everywhere and every time. It means being filled with a desire to see yourself and others succeed and then doing appropriate things with consideration in an empowering way. Learning how to establish proper boundaries is an act of kindness. Kindness includes using wisdom. Kindness arrives often in the little things and comes from character more than pocketbook.

Kindness is not necessarily found in solving problems. It is found in pointing the way to solutions and giving hope.

Your rewards in life will be proportionate to your ability to be of service and improve the world around you. Opportunities for service and improvement rarely come with labels attached. You need to actively look for these. I challenge you to go on a quest to spread kindness and consideration. As you do so success will become yours.

Where do your biggest Regrets come from?

Regret is like a weighted anchor that can tether you so strongly to the past that it may prevent you from accessing the best possible future. Regret is defined as memories with high emotional content, particularly with a sense of loss, sorrow or frustration. We all have some regrets and our ability or inability to manage them can be the difference between a life of ease and awareness or a life of stress and turmoil.

The bigger the thought of regret the more difficult it is manage those thoughts. The more heavily they weigh upon you will paralyze your ability to create a better future.

Where do your biggest regrets come from?

To understand this subject clearly we must first understand the 5 ways your brain learns and processes information. (This is something that is covered in greater detail in the book and movie “How Thoughts Become Things.” and the practical application of using this strategy to increase wealth, improve relationships and lifestyle are covered in the courses The Neuroscience of Success and Primed for Power.)

Essentially there are 5 ways or categories your brain uses to process information.  We all use each of the 5 areas, although we are generally more dominant in one or more of these areas. While all of these areas are important one specific area is responsible for most of the major worries and long lasting regrets in our life.

The 5 ways your Brain learns are Factual learning, Experiential learning, Social learning, Spacial learning and Intuitional learning.

Just briefly, here are simple descriptions of these learning categories so you can understand them in the context of this article.

Factual – This has reference to things that we interpret as fact. For example, 2 + 2 = 4, the capital of the United States is Washington D.C., and the declaration of independence was drafted in 1776. These are facts.  Our mind often categorizes opinions as facts too, but that’s a discussion for another time.

Experiential – This has reference to things we can only learn through experience or by direct interaction with our senses. (Taste, touch, smell, hearing, sight and sense of equilibrium or balance) For example, something like riding a bike or ice skating can only be learned through experience.

Social – This has reference to what we learn through observing those we interact with. This specifically includes what are we learning from our families, communities, religious environments, business associates, classmates and anyone else we may interact with. This is where much of our moral compasses are established as well as our beliefs and values.

Spacial – On the exterior this has a lot to do with organization and construction. For example, this is the learning you experience as you build a jig saw puzzle, play a game of Tetrus or even hang a picture on a wall. On the inside, in your mind, this has a lot to do with how we organize our thoughts and how we organize things into context. Sometimes this is referred to as conditioning. (As a side note it is in this category that top achievers are separated from those who struggle to create wealth, better relationships and lives of abundance. If you want to be wealthy then you need to learn how to master this kind of learning. Intuitional – The source of this learning is often hard to describe as it comes from within and is somewhat intangible. Something either feels right, or it doesn’t. With intuitional learning we know or learn something from out ‘gut instinct’ or a ‘hunch.’ Intuitional learning is the source of our greatest creativity and power. All significant successes have been sparked into being by this kind of learning.

So where do our regrets come from?

Is it Factual learning? Let’s think about this.  Have you ever had a lasting regret long term because you didn’t know the answer to 12,732 divided by 14? Or because you didn’t know the state capital of South Carolina? Or the exact date in history that the Berlin wall fell? You might have been slightly bothered, but the regret soon past. Our biggest regrets don’t come from factual learning.

Is it Experiential learning? Perhaps, while trying to learn a new thing like cooking you burnt the turkey or like me on one occasion when baking a cake, I forgot to even turn the oven on. Was it a source of major regret? Not necessarily.

Is it Social learning?  No doubt you have called out to someone in a crowd, “Jason!” only to realize that oops, that’s not my friend Jason. You duck your head and pretend it was someone else who shouted out.  Kind of embarrassing. Or maybe you tripped while walking down the street and picked yourself up quick and ran away hoping no one would notice. Also embarrassing, but not the biggest form of regret.

What about spacial learning? No one has ever been embarrassed long term because they struggled to put a jig saw puzzle together or didn’t hang a picture straight. This is not the source of our biggest regret either.

What is it?

It is intuitional. Our biggest regrets come when we felt something strongly and ignored the prompting. We experience the most regret when we know we should have listened to our gut, when we felt inside we should do something and did not do it.

This is where our biggest regrets come from. We will remember our whole life the love that got away, the time we should have acted on something we knew needed to be done, the words we knew would hurt and we knew we shouldn’t have, but we did. These are the source of our biggest regrets. Not listening to our inner voice or intuition.

From a science point of view our intuition is the only aspect of how our brain processes information that does not rely heavily on logic.  And if you think about it are any of your real dreams built on logic? If they are they’re probably not big enough. They should be built on passion. And passion like intuition are both very feeling based in nature and have little to do with logic.

My challenge to you is to listen carefully for that intuitional voice and trust your gut to guide you more often. Especially at the times when we don’t see logically how something may work out.

There have been many times in my life when I knew I needed to do something, even though the timing wasn’t perfect, or the finances were not in place, or I had to put something else off for the moment. I wish I could say I always listened, but I too have some regrets. One thing is certain, my best answers and results always came when I have seized an opportunity that my intuition, not my logic, told me to grasp.

Our words are one of the most powerful tools we have to convey our wants, desires, motives, intentions and expectations. Our words are more powerful than we give them credit for. Our words are responsible for much of our thought construction.

Rudyard Kipling, Author of the famous book, “The Jungle Book” once said, “Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.” When we think of the word drug we think of a substance that is used to alter states and create certain feelings within the body. When we approach the definition of drug in that way, words certainly qualify.

They can inspire us, cause us to feel loved, bring out the best in our actions and help us discover parts of ourselves we never knew we had. They can also create an opposite effect that limits us as well.

You’ve probably heard that what we talk about comes about. When we are engaged in conversations with others the words they use can tell us what  to expect and what another person is feeling inside.

Our words and the language that we use are symbolic representations of things or ideas in the tangible real world. When we think on these words or use them in our speech they activate specific areas in our brain that creates recall or recognition of the symbols those words represent. Based on our past experience with the specific thing or activity the word represents energies or charges are activated, or rather conditioned to activate when we interact with the word symbol.

These charges will either be positive or negative. (Not electrical necessarily – but of an emotional quality, either positive or negative.)This makes some words empowering to us and other words cause us to doubt, become fearful and even become offended when they are emotionally activated. When we attempt to process our thoughts in such an emotionally charged environment they are affected. (More on this phenomenon called, ‘Affect Illusion’ another time.) Depending on the emotion environment the thoughts nurtured in will often determine the end results they will produce.

Positive thoughts which increase our belief in ourselves immediately allow us to expand in our view and look for greater possibilities. On the other hand thoughts which limit us, make us afraid or cause us to doubt constrict our thoughts.

Our brain are wired to solve problems or escape danger. Even simple words which activate the state of fear, doubt, threat or containment requires our brain to seek a way to protect ourselves or escape. This survival instinct causes us to focus on that negative  energy until the energy dissipates, we escape or it is replaced by something more powerful.

An Experiment on the Energy of Words

Read the following two lists of words below for an experiment. Read them out loud. Read slowly and pay careful attention to the first images that come into your mind and how they make you feel. Let your brain find an image that corresponds to each word. Make the image vivid enough to feel the emotions your brain attaches them to. As you feel this energy ask: Are the words positive and empowering or do they cause negative emotions within you and cause you to feel contracted? Here’s the list:

Disgusting

Tragedy

Dirty

Vomit

Sorrow

Carnage

Pain

Fall

Regret

Wounded

Stench

Fail

Broken

Rude

Liar

Cruel

Did you feel a negative energy begin to circulate within your thoughts as your brain sought for recall or recognition of the symbol the word represented?

Let’s try another list of words, this time more positive.

Again remember to let your brain seek for the  images in your mind that you associate with these words. Make these images vivid, bright and real. Feel after the the emotions these images begin to plant within you. Read them slowly and out load. Here’s teh second list:

Joy

Love

Precious

Kind

Unstoppable

Caring

Hopeful

Expanding

Tranquil

Affection

Delicious

Clear

Harmonious

Strengthening

Comfort

Generosity

Friendship

What was the difference in the emotion, images, thoughts and feelings that these words created within you?

The energy that positive words ignite is undeniable and they have a profound effect on our thinking and behavior.

This isn’t really anything new, the earliest recordings of someone utilizing ‘The Power of Suggestion’ or words as Psychosomatic medicine date back to 934 AD.  The principles are explained by simply recognizing the mind is influenced by the words it hears, reads and considers.  Modern psychosomatic medicine regularly uses linguistic suggestion to create positive results in patients. What we suggest to the mind (most often by words) causes the mind to construct the reality internally and externally. The entire efforts of hypnotism rests on the power of suggestion.

In more modern times other systems have been developed to expand our view on the relationship between cognition, behavior, tangible result and our words and language. NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) developed in the 1970’s  by Richard Bandler and John Grinder established connections between our neurology, our language and our behavior patterns.

Through understanding these principles and several new other discoveries I have personally developed systems that are producing great results for people. Strategic Cognitive Construction (SCC) and The Ripple Effect are two specifically which accelerate the process of creating tangible realities from the things we think about using the power of linguistics.*

Through all these discoveries one thing becomes very clear.  Our words and language do play a significant role in our thinking processes.  To create great successes in our lives we need to harness the power of being more careful with the words we are using and accepting as truth when we consider our dreams.

One significant key to Success…

As I have had the opportunity to study more than 400 of the world’s top achievers I have found a single interesting key to creating greater productivity and success in all areas of life. This key can be readily seen in behavior, but it really begins in our thoughts. In fact, as I have studied neuroscience and how the brain works it begins at a level even more precise than thinking. It begins with how thinking is made.

It begins with our neurotransmitters.

Thoughts move through our brain over a pathway that begins with a neuron, then crosses a bridge called a synapse and is received ultimately by a receptor called a dendrite. Neurotransmitters are the agents (either chemical or electrical) which send signals over the synaptic bridge between neurons and dendrites. This is the exact place where the critical thing happens. The information in the thought either makes the jump over the synaptic bridge and continues on or it does not.

To be simplistic there are really only two kinds of neurotransmitters. Those that activate or allow the impulse to go forward and those that inhibit the continuation of the impulse message and prevent it from going forward.

So when it comes to creating success which one is more important? The neurotransmitters that activate or the ones that inhibit? While they both are important I would argue that there is one that may play a more significant role in creating success. Which one do you think it is?

Most people would say instinctively that it is the neurotransmitter that activates that connections leads us to greater success. After all, we hear and read so many messages from modern gurus that say we need to be proactive and those that are out there “doing more are getting more done.” But is this true?

No.

In fact, success on the inside at a molecular level all the way to success at an outside level is a matter of inhibitors.

Think about it. Everyday and in every way there is an overwhelming amount of information coming in at us from all six of our senses. (That’s right six, balance is one of our senses too.)1. In fact, too much information is coming in that we can possibly process. If our brain had to analyze and sort every bit of information it reacted with it would be paralyzed by processing. That is why our inhibitors are so important. They sort everything into either important or non-important. The most important things it lets become activated the non-important it eliminates.

We see the same effect in the world outside our brains. Successful people do not try to participate in everything. They understand that they can only succeed if they eliminate or inhibit things that are not important. They understand that success means a clear focus on the most valuable opportunities. 2. Less successful people on the other hand let every small distraction and meaningless opportunity steal their attention from the most valuable things. When the valuable things come last your cannot every create that which is most meaningful.

The one significant key to success that we alluded to at the beginning is simple. It is to learn how to inhibit those things that are unnecessary or unimportant. That is called productivity.

Often times people erroneously consider that the definition of productivity is simply to get things done. And they argue that productivity is increased when you get more done. While that is partially true, the real definition of productivity is better stated as minimizing input while increasing output.

The definition of productivity must include the decreasing of input, which demonstrates that you have learned how to create a better and more effective level of input.

The key to become a success in anything in life is not to do more. It is to do less, but to ensure that which we do is done more effectively. (That is something we teach in our Primed for Power event.)
