Why most speaker trainers can’t help you grow your business?

3573-frank_warren_-_2_-_june_2013-1024x654Recently I have noticed that there are more and more speakers who are including in their business offerings the ability to teach other speakers how to grow their business. This trend includes teaching new speakers how to craft a “signature” talk, present or “rock” the stage, speak internationally,  or grow your non-speaking business by incorporating public talks into your marketing strategies. While most of these ideas are good concepts to grow your business those presenting them are not able to get you to the results you need. And here’s why:

  • Most of those who are representing themselves as speaker trainers currently have never achieved success themselves. (You will never rise higher than the person teaching you. If they have never cleared 6 figures neither will you.)
  • Most have added speaker training to the their business because they aren’t making enough money elsewhere. (If a person is a speaker trainer they shouldn’t be offering other things. The idea of “Jack of all trades master of none” applies here.)
  • Many of those teaching speaking are teaching outdated practices. (The concept of a  “signature talk” hasn’t worked since the 1990’s. Most speakers are not paid a fee to present a “signature” talk in today’s market. the only ones that actually use these today are celebrities, athletes and politicians.)
  • Most of the speaker trainers today don’t know or teach anything about the business part of speaking. (Most focus on presentation skills, which is okay. But the presentation is only a fraction of the speaking BUSINESS. If you don’t have the business part figured out you won’t be speaking for long no matter how polished your presentation is.

The speaking business is one of the most competitive professions in the world. If you are going to rise to professional levels in this business you will need support. So if you are looking for a speaker trainer what should you look for? The first thing you need to establish are your specific goals as a speaker and what you are hoping to accomplish in your speaking business.  I recommend setting goals and getting clarity in the following areas: (And then before hiring a speaker trainer ask if this person has the experience to help you get there. when I say experience they should actually be doing it themselves. If they aren’t doing it they won’t be able to give that set of skills to you either.)

What niche do you want to be recognized in? (Does this trainer have experience in helping speakers to position people like you in that niche.)

Do you want to be thought of as a competent leader in your niche? What does that mean? (Each niche has a set of rules on how they find and position their leaders. If the speaker trainer you are thinking of working with isn’t the leader in their arena they don’t know a thing about positioning. What will they be able to teach you?)

What does your business model look like? (does this trainer understand what business models are currently working in today’s marketplace. In a recent training in London, UK my students and I identified nearly 250 business models for the modern speaker. Most people today teach on average 2 -3. Yikes!!!)

What would an effective customer funnel look like for you speaking business? (Again most speaker trainers today don’t understand the importance of a funnel. The bottom line is that if you don’t have a predictable path for your student then you won’t have any. No student = broke.)

What product, workshops or services will you offer, what will you charge and where will you put them in your funnel? (Most speakers feel like maybe they want to have a book. Books used to have power and authority but with he over saturation of print on demand companies no one places prestige on having a book any more. Everyone has one. They mean very little nowadays. There are many products better than books. Having said that there are some cases where books still work. But they don’t work well for everyone. I should also mention that products correctly created sell themselves and also position you as an expert – if you have the right product.)

How often do you want to speak? Getting speaking gigs is one of the most important aspects of your business. If you are not speaking you are not a speaker.  Make sure you select a speaker trainer who understands the 5 kinds of speaking gigs available to you in todays marketplace and that they know how to find these.

Joint Venturing with other speakers is one of the fastest ways to grow your business today. Who do you want to share the stage with and how will you get there. Is the speaker trainer you want to work with connected enough to help you get those joint ventures? Have they done enough of them to know how they work?

How will you get an audience to continue the relationship with you? Many refer to this part as selling from the stage. Selling from the stage is an important part of this business, but continuing the relationship can be done in many ways. In addition it is important to recognize that there are many different ways to sell from the stage. Some of the those ways will work better with your personality. Most speaker trainers today fail in the sense that they only know, practice and teach their way. They create clones of who they are and their selling style doesn’t work for everyone. You need to find and develop your style so that its effective and comfortable.

How will you create excitement around yourself in an oversaturated industry? In a world where there are too many speakers, coaches and trainers how will you stand out and make yourself valuable and visible? One of the essentially that speaker trainers need to understand today is how to use media to position themselves. This includes traditional media like TV, radio, print and also includes social media. (Truthfully many in the upcoming generation are wizards at social media. But social media is only part of the equation. Social media is quickly becoming just noise. Alone it isn’t going to give you the results you need.)

There are many other thoughts I share with my students to consider before they decide on who they want helping them build their speaking business. But one thing I always ask them to consider is this: THIS IS YOUR SPEAKING BUSINESS. GET THE VERY BEST PEOPLE HELPING YOU. THERE IS NO SENSE LEARNING HOW TO DO IT WRONG.

Speaking is a business. And if you are serious about that business you need to get serious about who you have helping you.

Many speakers want to create a successful and profitable business. The reality is that there is a lot of competition out there and only a small portion of speakers are actually even able to do this full time let alone build a prosperous business. There are a few things that you can do to increase your chances for success and the first thing would be to determine the business model you are going to use for your speaking business.


Early in my business career I had an experience that may be useful to share. In my late teens I had an idea for a business. I had a family friend that expressed he might be willing to help me launch it. He invited me to assemble my materials and come see him. I decided to get busy and build a business plan. I borrowed books form the library and got busy assembling what I thought a business plan looked like. I’ll never forget the night before I was at the local Kinkos putting the finishing touches on the plan until two a.m. adding colour diagrams and images. I put in a lot of work.

The next day when I brought it for him to take a look at he didn’t even open it up. Instead he asked one question. Where are the transactions in your business? He then explained that while a business plan was useful it was only a guide and often changed with the marketplace conditions, challenges faced by the business and many other factors. However if I knew where the transactions were I could recognize what activities where going to make my money.

So today I’m not going to tell you how to build you business specifically but I want you to think about where your transactions are. Here’s a small list some of my students came up with at on of our High Profit Speaker events:

Want to Be a Top Achiever?  Stop Setting Goals!

When most people make a goal, they state something they want to do or achieve, set a completion date, create some checkpoints for the goal, and then cross items off their list as they get done. Unfortunately, such an approach rarely leads to long-term success.

Why? Because the traditional goal-setting formula most people follow was developed in the early 1900s in manufacturing to enable company executives to monitor the number of units coming out of a factory by a certain date. It’s a great measuring stick if you’re manufacturing products, but if you’re trying to improve yourself or achieve something non-tangible, it’s a woefully ineffective and out-of-date process.

For example, if your goal is to have a better relationship with your spouse, the traditional goal-setting formula simply won’t work. Can you realistically set a completion date for the “better relationship” to occur? Can you define specific action steps that will enable you to create a better relationship with your spouse? Sure, you can decide to do things such as a weekly date night or spend an hour each day talking with your spouse, but are those items you can cross off a list once you do them, never to think of them again? Probably not. That’s why the current goal-setting formula that people use is incomplete.

All goals fall into one of two categories: “Be” goals and “Do” goals. Just as the names imply, “Be” goals encompass anything you want to be (a better spouse, a more productive employee, a more successful business owner, a more compassionate friend), and “Do” goals describe anything you want to do (close 20 sales, attend a child’s softball game, wash the dishes, hire a new employee). The traditional formula of goal setting only takes into account “Do” goals. Yet for most top achievers, 80 percent of their goals are “Be’ goals and only 20 percent are “Do” goals. They’re more concerned with character attributes than arriving at a final destination point. They know that character attributes often enable them to attain successful levels.

So it’s not that top achievers don’t set goals; rather, they set goals differently. Rather than use the word “goal,” top achievers use words like “destination” or “performance” or “habits.” They don’t cross items off a list and forget about them, they build upon their accomplishments to reach even greater levels of success.

If you want to be like the top achievers and attain new heights of success, then you need to use the proven “4 P” formula top performers use. By doing so, you’ll be able to achieve amazing results.

1. Amazing Potential: Every single person has an incredible amount of potential. Unfortunately, most people have no idea how significant their potential is. The fact is that you can do anything and you are worthy of anything. You simply need to believe that.

Top achievers have no doubts about their potential. They believe they can accomplish anything they want, no matter how lofty the desire. If they want to close 20 sales by the end of the month, they know they can do it. They believe in themselves unconditionally. Therefore, to be like a top achiever, you too need to believe that you can accomplish anything you dream. The sky’s the limit, so think big.

2. Amazing Possibility: While you have the potential to do anything you can conceive, you don’t truly understand what’s possible unless you see someone else doing it or something similar. For example, for decades no one believed it was possible to run a mile in under four minutes, but since Roger Bannister broke the “four minute barrier” in 1954, many athletes have improved upon his record. Once athletes saw what was possible, they pushed themselves to do better and accomplish more.

The same holds true in the business world. When we see other people close contracts, invent new products and offer new services, we see what’s possible and we make our own vision for our future. We recognize our possibilities by what we see and believe. Once we believe it, that vision turns into a desire. As we believe and desire those things we see more possibilities around us. Going back to our example of closing 20 sales by the end of the month, as long as we see other people in our company or industry closing sales, then we see the possibility that exists and we can build upon that. We may even be able to get specific, such as seeing what specific product sells best, what price point sells most, etc.

3. Amazing Probability: To make something probable, you need to surround yourself with people and events that increase your chance of success. Think of it this way: If you were at one end of a long room, and at the other end was a dart board, people would say it wasn’t probable that you could put a dart in the bull’s eye. But with every step closer to the dart board you took, you’d increase your probability of getting a bull’s eye.

Those steps you take forward are what you learn, the relationships you have, the things you surround yourself with, and the preparation you put in. In our sales example, we could surround ourselves with customers who could fulfill our objective, other salespeople who could teach us the techniques we need to know, circumstances where we would have the ability to pitch and sell, and self-improvement venues that would enable us to think and act like a top producer.

4. Awesome Performance: Most people have heard the phrase “Give a man to fish and he eats for a day; teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.” But the truth is that if you teach a man to fish he doesn’t eat for a lifetime; he’s just a man in a classroom. In order to eat forever he has to get out to the lake with a fishing rod and start fishing. So the last step to achieving great things is to get out there and actually do something. That’s what top achievers do. So if you were trying to close 20 sales by month’s end, you would now need to put everything you’ve learned and observed into action. Action, not knowledge alone, is what creates results.

Make Your Life Amazing: All top achievers go through this four-step process. They recognize their potential, they see the possibilities, and they turn those possibilities into probabilities by learning and putting themselves into positions where they can gain more information and surround themselves with the right people. As they accumulate this information they turn it into performance by actually doing something with it. That’s really the secret to achieving all your life’s goals.

Remember, success is not an event. It’s a journey. That’s why performance is so important, and consistent performance is nothing more than a habit. So if you want to be successful, you need to identify the successful attributes you want to display and make them habits. It’s not sufficient to do something great once and then expect your life to be brilliant. You need to continually strive to do bigger and better things. Rather than cross accomplishments off a list, you need to build upon them so you can achieve even more. Only then can you truly accomplish everything you want in life—all without ever setting a single goal.
