Most speakers aren’t prepared.

10X Your Speaking Business Douglas Vermeeren fail

Wait? What do you mean? Most speakers are not prepared? Douglas Vermeeren. And I’m offended. (Actually this is the response I get most of the time when I tell speakers they are unprepared.

Okay… so where’s my evidence?  Well, it’s easy. Just look at he results at the end of their presentation. Sure they can talk from the stage. But if their goal is to have people connect with them further, maybe buy a program, product or workshop then they have failed. This all comes down to practice and preparation.

If your goal of selling something didn’t happen… you weren’t prepared. Got it?

End Rant.

Your Credibility as a Speaker is Weak.

leave a comment »

10X Your speaking business douglas vermeeren credibility.jpg

According to Douglas Vermeeren most speakers don’t fully understand the importance or process of attaining credibility. Most think that what they really need is a unique approach to present and a focus on a signature talk and personal story. While those things are interesting  they are not valuable. They also don’t build massive credibility for your brand.

In other words just telling your story isn’t enough to make you an expert. YOU MUST ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND YOUR MARKET AND DELIVER RESULTS DRIVEN VALUE. Ummm… is this important. Why the heck do you think I wrote in in caps??? It is paramount and this is what will separate speakers in the future between those who have careers and those who do it as a hobby. If you want to rise above the chaos that is the speaking business today drop the idea of a signature story making you special and valuable. It’s a lie taught by those who don’t understand the business.

What the industry supports is people who actually add value. You gain this kind of credibility by taking your speaking business seriously enough to invest the effort to understand the marketplace, the content that is occurring in the conversation, to create and think about things in an innovative pioneering way and just get good at working with people. Wow! Why aren’t people doing it?  (lazy? ego based?  unaware? I don’t know possibly all of the above. Most people think that the speaking business is easy money and they aren’t willing to do the work.)

It is work. Get on it.

Warning: Motivational Speakers Can’t Afford To Make Mistakes

10X Your Speaking Business Douglas Vermeeren are you right?

Over the last few months Doug Vermeeren have seen that many speaker trainers are starting to appear on the scene, while some of them have some interesting ideas most of them are sharing information that doesn’t work at a high level in todays marketplace. Ideas and concepts such as developing signature speeches, seeking out paid speaking events and so forth are very limited (if they will get you results at all)

The speaking business is undergoing a massive shift right now – simply due to the massive volume of people that are entering the speaking profession. That means that if you want to have a platform or a business you will need to be more valuable than anyone else in todays marketplace.

Those who cannot level up will be natural processes find themselves irrelevant in a hurry.

If you have a brilliant message you owe it to yourself to level up what you do. And that begins with getting better people to teach you. You can’t settle for paying someone who doesn’t have the skills to get you what you need in todays marketplace. Life is too short and you don’t have it to waste on theories that don’t work or tools that are decades old. If you want to become the best you need the best to help you. Good intentions and a heartfelt “speaker trainer” won’t get you there in today’s marketplace.

Is The Public Speaking Dead?

Is public speaking as a business dead?

by Douglas Vermeeren 10X Your Speaking Business

For the last two decades I have been a public speaker. I have seen a lot of changes and most prominently I have seen many new speakers arrive on the scene with the intention to create a massive business sharing their expertise.
More often than not they fail.

This makes me ask: Is public speaking as a business dead or dying?

As I have carefully considered this question and looked at the complete landscape of what is really going on in this highly saturated industry of speaking, coaching, mentoring and personal development in general I have an answer to this question:

The old way of building this business is dying.

While those who understand the nuances of today’s marketplace are not only thriving but building incredible 7 & 8 figure businesses.

If I were summarize a few of the differences between the dying and thriving it would be as simple as this:

The dying are relying on an old model of the speaking business. In other words they are focusing on creating signature speeches, speaking for a fee and doing as many speeches as they possibly can. The thriving understand that building a brand is important and real authentic connection with the audience trumps signature speeches every time.

The dying are always on the hunt for the next event to get in front of an audience.
The thriving understand the platforms available to them to create audiences around them and their content. They understand that once they find their vibe they earn their tribe.

The dying take out ads and do posts on social media focused on telling about themselves and their many accomplishments, constantly inviting you to events or buy products and promoting their latest greatest whatever it is.The thriving understand that today’s market place is value content and relationship driven. The more you give away the more likely you are to attract people who want to learn more.

The dying also don’t understand the important of building relationships with the power players in the business and that reputation helps create brand. The thriving understand that relationships with high level experts is available to them and they understand how to create synergy with people that matter. The dying don’t have a game plan and they often fly by the seat of their pants, taking whatever speaking gigs come their way.

The thriving understand that a business strategy is essential to success in the speaking business and saying no to events that don’t serve your bran is one of the best things you can do.
Anyways, there are a few thoughts for now.

Are you an authentic speaker? 10X Your Speaking Business with Douglas Vermeeren

Ar eyou an authentic speaker? 10X Your Speaking Business with Douglas Vermeeren

How important is authenticity in public speaking? It didn’t used to be. What used to be important was delivering a “signature” speech and prepared and scripted power point . The information to be shared was the most important. Perhaps you’ve even heard the saying content is KING. Well, not any more.

The most important aspect a speaker can master in todays marketplace is connection and engagement.

Don’t believe me take a look at the social media world (which is a reflection of how conversations take place in real life and how brands are built today.) With the advent of the internet information has reached a point of oversaturation. We have more information and content than we could ever hope to consume in our lifetime. What people are seeking now is to receive that information from those who can show us how to use it in authentic and valuable ways.

In other words what we want is connection. We need to connect with the messenger and we need to see how the content connects to us. Which is also the job of the messenger.

Share your thoughts… Am I wrong?

Too Many speakers get it wrong when it comes to bureaus! 10X Your Speaking Business with Douglas Vermeeren

10X Your speaking Business - Speaking Bureau

Over the year as part of several speaker associations I have noticed that there is a big push for members to join a speakers bureau. In fact, there is often a feeling that you haven’t really made it until you have a bureau representing you. While there is a place for bureaus in the speaking business not all speakers will benefit from a connection with a bureau. While this quick article isn’t meant to be an exhaustive discussion on bureau I just wanted to point out a few common mistakes and misconceptions about speaking bureaus to help your speaking business.

1) The use speaking bureaus has declined at least 60% in the last five years. This insight has come through my interviews and discussions with several different owners of speaking bureaus over the last year or so. The decline according to some is as high as 80%. The reasons most of them share for the decline all make sense. Including everything from most speakers are now accessible through their own website and event planners often prefer to work directly with the speaker than a third party. Second the economy has put many speakers into the marketplace who will either speaker for free or close to. Many organizations are now creating in house training programs.

2)Speaking Bureaus are shifting focus. Because the market in starting to dwindle for companies using speaking bureaus the bureaus have had to level up the talent on their roster. They are no longer interested to take just anyone because their clients are not willing to pay for just anyone. Speaking Bureaus are making a massive shift towards representing celebrities, athletes, politicians and celebrity experts (Top best selling authors, not pseudo best selling authors. I’ll explain more about this later but essential this means self proclaimed best sellers or engineered amazon best sellers.)

3)There is a is misconception that if you re with a speaking bureau you will get more speaking gigs. This is not true. Being with a bureau guarantees you nothing. Speaking Bureaus are in business to make money and they focus on those who are generating it for them. If you aren’t already a hot topic you will not be among their favourites. If you really want to get busy as a speaker you will have to create your own opportunities and perhaps the bureaus will become inspired by the buzz you create.

Hope these point were helpful.

13 things some speakers do that makes them suck. 10X Your speaking business with Douglas Vermeeren

10X Your Speaking Business Douglas Vermeeren some speakers suck

Have you ever heard a speaker that sucked? Of course you have. (I know in the beginning of my career I was often THAT speaker.) Share your thoughts on what makes a speaker successful and what makes them suck. I’m interested to know for a project I am working on and when I share the answers to this you may be surprised.

Here are a few immediate things that people have shared which you want to be careful of:

(And by the way I’ve actually seen all of these happen.)

1. Speaker is unprepared.
2. Speaker shows up late and unprepared.
3. Speakers pass around crinkled up and soiled order forms or handouts
4. They try to sell products that are damaged
5. They make excuses about why they didn’t bring products
6. Too much powerpoint or tech (ie. Videos etc.)
7. Too many high fives, handshakes, hugs and stand up/sit down exercises. (Also dancing without purpose just to dance)
8.Too much text power points
9.Pitching through the entire presentation and no content. (Very desperate)
10. Ego based speech (all about how they did this, that and the other. No audience relevance)
11.A memorized scripted “Signature speech” with no audience connection
12. Cliche phrase. ( I don’t say this impress you, but to impress upon you etc.)
13. Trying to be someone they are not.

Are you a speaker looking to grow your business? Here’s two quick tips for you.

By Douglas Vermeeren, 10X Your Speaking Business

10X Your Speaking Business Douglas Vermeeren level up

I have been a speaker for more than a decade now. (actually maybe even closer to two) and I have seen a few things along the way. Some of these strategies for growing your speaking business have been awesome and some not so great. Recently I was asked by one of my students what is the absolute best way to grow your speaking business and I had two specific ideas come to mind. Here they are:

1) Remember that your business is connection

Most speakers follow a very traditional approach where they prepare their presentation and then present. Their presentation if you follow them around for a while is basically the same no matter who, where or when they are presenting. And believe it or not this is not just a beginner mistake. I was recently at an event with a very well-known speaker who you would certainly know. I have shared the stage with him multiple times before and guess what each time (including this time – which is ten years since the first time I shared the stage with him) his presentation is identical to every other time I have seen him speak. Naturally there were others in the audience who had heard him before who probably also noticed. All the jokes, stories and points he shared were exactly where they were last time. Did he connect with his audience? NOPE. I have to give it a great big fat fail. Connection is what keeps your audience coming back and also staying connected between talks too. (More on this in another post, but for todays purposes I’m am just going to stress that you need connection or your speaking business will not survive.)

2) Leveraging authority and relationships

The second point in these two steps has helped me to grow my speaking business faster than any other idea. I call this one leveraging authority or relationships. It is quite simple actually. When I first started as a speaker (and you might be here right now) no one knew my name. And because I was so new and invisible no one really cared either. It was difficult to get speaking gigs on my own and even more difficult if I was hosting my own event to get people to come. Quite by accident I was invited to share the stage with some speakers who were well known. (If my memory serves me correctly it was Brian Tracy and Jack Canfield.) Now those two guys are very well know internationally and excellent speakers. being part of the event with them immediately increased my credibility and contributed to my database. You can imagine I was also able to use the marketing that featured me with those guys in many of my future marketing. here’s a link actually to an early TV commercial that had Jack Canfield, myself and another speaker. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1AutPT4HCk

Leveraging authority has helped me grow my brand quickly and powerfully. One of the things that also really helped was I acquired tickets for many of the groups or individuals I knew would hire me to speak but had never heard of me. Naturally they would have to sit through me to get to someone like Brian or Jack. This strategy was great for getting me booked.

Anyways, I am sure I will share much more on these two points and others in the future but for today there are a few things to think about.
