The Most expensive things in the world…

large-pile-of-hundred-dollar-bills-cash-money-savings-rich_large

A few years ago I was sitting with Frank Maguire, one of the co-founders of FedEx and he asked me a question. His questions was simple, “What is the most expensive thing in the world?”

The reason this question is important in for entrepreneurs and building wealth is because I have found as important as it is to do the right thing, there are equally dangerous things that you can do that will rob you of becoming wealthy and productivity. Naturally Frank’s question has led to some serious thought over the years. As I have thought about this question I have decided that there is a relatively important list of things that become expensive that most people never think about and that list exposes us to things that cost us money, keep us from making money and most important cost us time.

I call this list the “most expensive things list”. I invite you to consider the things here and how your current involvement with these things might be costing you money and opportunity.

  1. Excuses – Excuses are essentially lies we tell ourselves to keep us from being accountable. We lie to ourselves to remove responsibility but in the process we also remove our results. Success in creating wealth means that we sometimes have to put ourselves on the line and make things happen even when it requires us to become uncomfortable. The wealthiest people I know find a way while those who are broke stop at finding an excuse.
  1. Bad advice from broke people – It has been said that where you get your advice will determine where you get to wind up in life. The problem that I have observed over the years is that too many people stay broke because they simply get bad advice from other broke people. Sure those people may be trying to help, they almost always have good intentions, but they are just as broke as you are. It’s like a drowning person trying to teach you how to swim. It doesn’t make much sense does it?
  1. Setting low personal standards – Your standards begin with what you believe you are entitled to and what you’re worthy of. As I have taught wealth strategies around the world it is very common to see people who believe that the most basic wealth strategies are sound and will work – but that they quickly suggest that they will work for other people and not for themselves. It’s almost like they believe that they have some kind of curse that will keep them broke and in poverty. Nothing could be further from the truth. Money itself doesn’t care. If you follow the patterns that create wealth you will become wealthy. There is no luck involved. Raise your standards in terms of what you are willing to do, who you are willing to learn from, what you feel you are worth and how much effort you will put in and you can’t help but see results.
  2. Ego – Most people stay broke because they feel like they already have all the answers. As one of my mentors put it to me when I was a young and smart-alec teenager, “You can be rich or you can be right. You can’t be both.” He then pointed out that if I was determined to hold onto my ego I would get to keep everything that went along with it. That meant everything my ego had created I would get to keep no more. My financial situation was based on my understanding at that point and so if I chose to stay the same my situation would stay the same. Ego is one of the greatest enemies of success.  Choosing to be rich starts with choosing to be teachable.
  1. Procrastination or hesitation – Procrastination is putting on hold something that you know you should do and it has never created wealth or success. If you know what you want you must do it. You must seize opportunities you are seeking. I have seen many many circumstances where deals have gone to the fastest person to say yes. If something is a good deal and a good opportunity chances are very good that others are rushing for the same deal. Don’t miss out because you hesitate. There’s a reason why not everyone is wealthy – and that’s that there are often a scarcity of opportunities.  I also believe the universe is like an echo chamber. If you show up with hesitation everything will show up for you with the same hesitation. If you show up with boldness everything in your life will show up the same way. After having spent time with some of the most wealthy people in the world it has been evident to me that not one of them is a procrastinator. When opportunities show up they move quickly even if they don’t have all the answers.  Another important thought on procrastination. How many wish they would have started buying properties for example when you were in your late teens? So why did you wait? Why are you waiting now?  There is a Chinese proverb that says the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago and right now. You may not be able to go back in time to plant the tree but if you don’t do something today you are creating exactly the same kind of regret. One of the properties I bought early in life I paid $55,000 for. This was in the mid-1990s. Today that property is worth around $359,000. I also have wishes and my wish is that I would’ve bought more. You are always going to experience this – but getting started today with what you can do today will at least get rid of a few of these big regrets.
  1. Lack of clarity — perhaps this point is linked closely to the concept of avoiding procrastination. When you lack clarity of purpose or an understanding of how your money will be made you can’t become skilled enough to quickly evaluate opportunities. As a result you miss a lot of opportunities which slows down your ability to make progress and build your wealth. Once you identify your strongest opportunities for creating wealth you must learn ahead of time what you need to do to be able to be prepared for those opportunities when they arrive.
  1. Poor influences – You’ve heard it said that your network equals your net worth. This is certainly true. Not only does this reflect in the people you learn from but even more so about the what people around you expect out of life. If you are surrounded by people with low expectations you won’t create much. If you are in a community of people that are striving to create wealth and excited about it you will do the same.  Like attracts like. If you want to be on fire you best be a log in the fire rather than a spark off in the distance alone trying to stay hot.
  1. Crappy trades/patterns – Wealth is created primarily through the accumulation of good trades. Most obviously when we acquire an asset that generates cashflow or capital gains that’s a good deal. But these trades start at a more basic level than assets. They start even with the trades of how we prioritize our day and utilize our time. When you allow trivial things to take over your day in exchange for powerful things you don’t create powerful things. Make better trades in all areas of your life. And let’s be honest one of the things that people want is wealth for free. You can’t have it for free. You will have to buy something. You can never save your way to wealth. You can only do it through smart purchases. For example, you can’t collect the rent on a property you don’t buy. You can’t get a dividend on an investment you did buy. You must learn to make smart purchases and trades and that is the only option.
  1. Being a solopreneur – Wealth is a team sport. If you try to do it alone relying on just your own knowledge, money, time, opportunities and expertise you will soon find limitations. You only have so much time, energy, know how and money. Think about the most obvious example of real estate. If you want to acquire a property to start producing cashflow with you will be waiting a long time if you try to pay for it by yourself. You will have to save the entire purchase price of the property and closing cost. Certainly the property will be gone by that time. You must learn and use the principle of leverage if you are going to be successful. You can’t win the gain of wealth playing by yourself.
  1. Lack of know how – This means education. You can only earn what you learn. You can’t implement what you don’t understand. No meet how willing you are to succeed you will never create success unless you add to that willingness a correct understanding of what you need to do. Correct actions not dreams create results.

And lastly as a bonus thought one of the most expensive obstacles to wealth are the stories that people tell themselves that keep them broke. Perhaps this can be an expansion on the first point of excuses. That’s really what stories are. You can’t tell yourself stories about why you aren’t good enough, why something won’t work or why you can’t participate. If you are committed to becoming wealthy you have got to make a clear decision that this is what you will do.

Why most “speaker trainers” can’t help you grow your business?

Why most speaker trainers can’t help you grow your business?

By Douglas Vermeeren

3573-frank_warren_-_2_-_june_2013-1024x654Recently I have noticed that there are more and more speakers who are including in their business offerings the ability to teach other speakers how to grow their business. This trend includes teaching new speakers how to craft a “signature” talk, present or “rock” the stage, speak internationally,  or grow your non-speaking business by incorporating public talks into your marketing strategies. While most of these ideas are good concepts to grow your business those presenting them are not able to get you to the results you need. And here’s why:

  • Most of those who are representing themselves as speaker trainers currently have never achieved success themselves. (You will never rise higher than the person teaching you. If they have never cleared 6 figures neither will you.)
  • Most have added speaker training to the their business because they aren’t making enough money elsewhere. (If a person is a speaker trainer they shouldn’t be offering other things. The idea of “Jack of all trades master of none” applies here.)
  • Many of those teaching speaking are teaching outdated practices. (The concept of a  “signature talk” hasn’t worked since the 1990’s. Most speakers are not paid a fee to present a “signature” talk in today’s market. the only ones that actually use these today are celebrities, athletes and politicians.)
  • Most of the speaker trainers today don’t know or teach anything about the business part of speaking. (Most focus on presentation skills, which is okay. But the presentation is only a fraction of the speaking BUSINESS. If you don’t have the business part figured out you won’t be speaking for long no matter how polished your presentation is.

The speaking business is one of the most competitive professions in the world. If you are going to rise to professional levels in this business you will need support. So if you are looking for a speaker trainer what should you look for? The first thing you need to establish are your specific goals as a speaker and what you are hoping to accomplish in your speaking business.  I recommend setting goals and getting clarity in the following areas: (And then before hiring a speaker trainer ask if this person has the experience to help you get there. when I say experience they should actually be doing it themselves. If they aren’t doing it they won’t be able to give that set of skills to you either.)

What niche do you want to be recognized in? (Does this trainer have experience in helping speakers to position people like you in that niche.)

Do you want to be thought of as a competent leader in your niche? What does that mean? (Each niche has a set of rules on how they find and position their leaders. If the speaker trainer you are thinking of working with isn’t the leader in their arena they don’t know a thing about positioning. What will they be able to teach you?)

What does your business model look like? (does this trainer understand what business models are currently working in today’s marketplace. In a recent training in London, UK my students and I identified nearly 250 business models for the modern speaker. Most people today teach on average 2 -3. Yikes!!!)

What would an effective customer funnel look like for you speaking business? (Again most speaker trainers today don’t understand the importance of a funnel. The bottom line is that if you don’t have a predictable path for your student then you won’t have any. No student = broke.)

What product, workshops or services will you offer, what will you charge and where will you put them in your funnel? (Most speakers feel like maybe they want to have a book. Books used to have power and authority but with he over saturation of print on demand companies no one places prestige on having a book any more. Everyone has one. They mean very little nowadays. There are many products better than books. Having said that there are some cases where books still work. But they don’t work well for everyone. I should also mention that products correctly created sell themselves and also position you as an expert – if you have the right product.)

How often do you want to speak? Getting speaking gigs is one of the most important aspects of your business. If you are not speaking you are not a speaker.  Make sure you select a speaker trainer who understands the 5 kinds of speaking gigs available to you in todays marketplace and that they know how to find these.

Joint Venturing with other speakers is one of the fastest ways to grow your business today. Who do you want to share the stage with and how will you get there. Is the speaker trainer you want to work with connected enough to help you get those joint ventures? Have they done enough of them to know how they work?

How will you get an audience to continue the relationship with you? Many refer to this part as selling from the stage. Selling from the stage is an important part of this business, but continuing the relationship can be done in many ways. In addition it is important to recognize that there are many different ways to sell from the stage. Some of the those ways will work better with your personality. Most speaker trainers today fail in the sense that they only know, practice and teach their way. They create clones of who they are and their selling style doesn’t work for everyone. You need to find and develop your style so that its effective and comfortable.

How will you create excitement around yourself in an oversaturated industry? In a world where there are too many speakers, coaches and trainers how will you stand out and make yourself valuable and visible? One of the essentially that speaker trainers need to understand today is how to use media to position themselves. This includes traditional media like TV, radio, print and also includes social media. (Truthfully many in the upcoming generation are wizards at social media. But social media is only part of the equation. Social media is quickly becoming just noise. Alone it isn’t going to give you the results you need.)

There are many other thoughts I share with my students to consider before they decide on who they want helping them build their speaking business. But one thing I always ask them to consider is this: THIS IS YOUR SPEAKING BUSINESS. GET THE VERY BEST PEOPLE HELPING YOU. THERE IS NO SENSE LEARNING HOW TO DO IT WRONG.

Speaking is a business. And if you are serious about that business you need to get serious about who you have helping you.

I have been training speakers for years. I have been able to show them how in my first six months as a speaker I was able to generate over 7 figures. I have been able to show them how to get more speaking gigs. JV with some of the top leaders in the business today. I have shown them how to speaker internationally. I have shown them how to get on TV, radio and print. And I have shown them a multitude of others things that are needed for a successful speaking business that most do not even know about.

Are you Proactive? What difference does it make?

By Douglas Vermeeren

Douglas Vermeeren ppm 22#DouglasVermeeren #dougvermeeren #personalPowerMastery

Being proactive or taking responsibility for your actions and choices is the first step towards creating any success in real life. If we avoid responsibility or choose to be reactive to what’s going on around us we actually give away our power. As we give away our power we also lose our ability to create outcomes that are important to us.

When we live in a reactive mode we become paralyzed and our world shrinks. We give up the right make choices as we by default give this power to others.

You can recognize a reactive person by the behaviours and language. Their actions often appear as follows:

They are easily offended

They blame others

They are often highly emotional (Super Highs and Super Lows)

They get angry easily and often

They say hurtful things

They criticize and judge others

They complain

They wait for things to happen

Find themselves often engaged in drama

Change only when they must

Unwilling to learn or follow

They are often financially broke

Paralyzed when problems appear

Always late

Disorganized

Use contention and intimidation as a tool

Don’t own their mistakes

The language they use is often as follows:

I have to

They made me

I must

I can’t

I don’t have the time, monte, opportunity, friends, resources etc.

It happened because of X

Because of these approaches reactive people always find their world shrinking. A shrinking universe is connected to diminishing opportunity and scarcity. You can never have abundance on any level in a setting where scarcity is nurtured.

The good news is that people are neither 100% proactive or reactive. We are all somewhere along a continuum. You are reactive some of the time and proactive some of the time. My encouragement to you is to identify areas where you are reactive and seek for improvement. Even a small degree of improvement will begin to open up more opportunities for choice. More choices simply equals more happiness and success. You’ll also find that taking responsibility sooner and more fully decreases the amount of negative stress in your life. When we take responsibility even for the things we don’t like in our life we immediately gain the power to change those things. You can only change what you choose to own.

Are you prepared to learn?
Speaker_Training_Systems copy 2By Douglas Vermeeren

In thinking about what to write about today I had an interesting experience that brought to my mind something that we never really talk about very often in personal development. I recently attended an event from another speaker where several of the attendees were not prepared to participate. They came in late disrupting the group. One of them had a cellphone in hand finishing a conversation as they entered. Another was completely unprepared to take notes and immediately got up from their chair to hunt the room for a pen and paper.

And the organizer was no better. They had AV troubles from the beginning. There weren’t enough chairs for attendees and people either stood at the back or tried to solve things on their own with the hotel staff. It was a really distracting place to learn. (And the tickets to this event were not inexpensive.)

As I sat in the audience I thought about how these situations could have been avoided and the entire experience improved upon. I thought to myself how odd it was that people invested to be there yet they arrived unprepared. How different is this than other experiences we encounter in life?

If you ordered furniture you’d make space for it. If you paid for a vacation you’d pack a suitcase and bring your passport. Rarely do people miss their flights, in fact most arrive early. So why don’t they do this with seminars they attend?

Rather than share all the answers that I believe I would like to open this topic up for discussion and use this as a platform to gather data so that this reading can prevent this from happening at their own events. Please share your thoughts on why this happens and how to fix it in the comment section.
