Until I learned that the rewards are in being bold, taking action and then finishing the job (or hiring others to help you finish the job) you will never create massive success. What can you do today to start, keep going and finish at a level of competence? Your life is your own fault – The power of thoughts – Personal Power Mastery

leave a comment »

Douglas Vermeeren Personal Power Mastery 152Recently I had a lady at one of my events express how she just had a massive a-ha moment occur. For the first time she realized how her thoughts literally had created her life. Now for some this may be pretty clear and evident. You might even call it common sense. But as I listened to this lady share her thoughts with my audience members at a recent PPM (Personal Power Mastery) I was reminded of the way our thoughts manifest themselves in reality and often how they can surprise us with their speed.

I will call this lady Joyce. As Joyce stood up to share her story I could tell that she was doing it with some regret. The results she had created in her life was a separation from her husband and they were now headed directly for divorce. It didn’t look like there was much that could change that. They had both gone a little bit to far and said a little bit too much that healing was near impossible.

As Joyce stood in front of the group sharing her current Realtionship state she began to talk about how the roots had truly been in her thoughts. Little by little she began to shift her thinking as to how things would be more ideal with a different partner. She began to think about how some of the little things he did annoyed her. Those thoughts began to slowly manifest themselves as small criticisms and jabs. She began to share how the more habitual the thinking became the more it turned into comments and actions.

As the thoughts turned more and more critical she began to see how they strangled affection and hope right out of her heart. Every sign of compassion for her mate disappeared until they found themselves here. She was quick to point out that her was not perfect. But he certainly had become far worse than he was through the kinds of thinking she was doing. The more she dwelt on his faults and painted him in a negative light the more terrible he became.

As she stood before our group with tears she admitted that her thoughts had gotten out of control. She never intended for it to come to this point. As she reflected on the journey she told our group that for the first time in a long time that she realized during our weekend together at PPM that she realized what had happened. And in reality she did still love her husband very much, but she could also see why he chose not to stay.

Now I don’t know what the ending of this story will be. But I do know that our habitual thoughts all come with a consequence. We cannot dwell on thoughts for long periods of time without seeing a form of them begin to manifest in reality.

My challenge to you is to choose your thoughts carefully and be sure that they are pointing towards the outcomes you desire most. For those of you who’ve attended PPM in the past you will also know how quickly you can shift your perspective and your thoughts and even the things that currently do not serve you (or even hurt you) can be shifted into something that you want and deserve when you use the correct tools and methods to do so.

Level up your inner voice – Personal Power Mastery Moment

By Douglas Vermeeren

You’ve heard the saying that whether we think we can or think we can’t we are right. My interviews with top achievers and observance of those who are less successful have proven this true countless times. Our success begins with our thoughts, and even more specifically with the quality of those thoughts and what we say to ourselves.

Often most people don’t realize however, that its not the great and grand thoughts that pass through our mind each day that actually make the most difference. In fact it is the small almost harmless appearing thoughts that often have the most weight. It is the small thoughts that we often pay little attention to that condition us as to what we believe is possible for ourselves. Those little doubts are like cracks that appear in a damn. Almost almost invisible at times they make the structure of the damn weak and ready to collapse the minute something large presses against it.

The same is true of the small thoughts most people continually nurture around doubt, scarcity, lack of self worth and so forth. Because those thoughts move freely in the mind without any attempt at repair when some great opportunity comes along that could really benefit them they are not able to take it into their lives because they have allowed small doubting thoughts to settle for too long.

If you would like to achieve better outcomes in your life and experience more success the first step is to pay very careful attention to how you communicate to yourself. Positive and empowering communication must proceed powerful and positive results.

My challenge to you today is to start looking more carefully at your thoughts about yourself and to yourself. Start believing more in your ability to succeed then listening to your voices of doubt.

How are you creating your life?
Personal Power Mastery Moment By Douglas Vermeeren

Douglas Vermeeren - Personal Power Mastery- Success quote 119

You’ve heard the idea that people spend more time planning their summer vacations than they do planning for their life. It might sound like a funny idea if it weren’t closer to the truth than most people realize. The majority of people who even claim to be in charge of their lives still don’t take time to regularly plan and evaluate their lives. Their planning is most often sporadic and only spurred on by either outside events that force them to revaluate or a high inspiring moment that reminds them of what they are capable of.

If you are going to make powerful strides towards creating the success you want in your life a careful examination of your life and your activities in relationship to your goals must e a regular activity.

As I meet, interviewed and spend time with some of the worlds top achievers I was was quite surprised to see that each of them spend much careful time in meditation, pondering and careful thought about their present and future. (They didn’t waste a lot of time worrying about the past except to repeat successes or quickly learn from a mistake) Their time was also not spent wishing or wondering what they could do. It was actually productive thinking about why some thing would be important, how they might accomplish it and who they could reach out to for help.

It is important to point out that many of the gurus today encourage their supporters to learn to think big. While that is important I have found that often those who created lives of challenge, poverty and difficulty often tries to be big thinkers too. Big thinking alone doesn’t do it. The thinking that follows must be entered around execution and support for that execution.

One of the thoughts I often share in Personal Power Mastery is the concept you’ve heard that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I want to share that room to heaven is to. The only difference between the people on the two roads is that those who make it to the better places tend to add execution to the their good intentions.

Over the year I have observed that that there are some additional steps required to bring what you think about into reality. Here’s the first consideration:

If you only think it you probably won’t do it.

If you plan it you might do it. Or do it for a while.

If you schedule it you will get it done.

If you want to actually shift your ideas from thoughts to reality in the real world the first thing you need to do is start scheduling when you will take action on what you have thought about.

The second consideration:
Why do people procrastinate? The answers are simple and there are two of them. Firstly, the task that they need to accomplish aren’t in line with their highest values. When people don’t have activities that are in line with what they value most they aren’t interested to do them. And secondly they need momentum. Often people procrastinate because the aren’t really sure what to do next. Build a schedule (interesting this is connected to the idea above) and start developing a pattern of habits so you know what needs to be done next. If you know what’s next you don’t have to procrastinate trying to figure it out.

Thirdly, Seek out support and accountability partners. When you have others helping you they can’t help you stay focused and even provide support for achieving your successes.

My challenge to you today is to spend some time in planning your life. Set aside a regular time to do this often. Keep a journal for it and be sure to translate your plans from thinking to a schedule. Get to work in really time to start making things happen and get some support.

Our Values determine so much!

Douglas Vermeeren - Personal Power Mastery Quote 118.jpg

Our Values determine so much.
Personal Power Mastery Minute by Douglas Vermeeren

This is a most important subject which I anticipate you will be seeing many times in the future with Personal Power Mastery. The reason why is that people always support what they value most. Let me put it another way, Why do people struggle to get to their goals? Why do people struggle to keep New Years resolutions? Why do employees miss sales goals? Why do people even forget things they said they would do? Why do people even forget important dates like birthdays and anniversaries? It all has to do with our values.

What we value most becomes a priority.

What we don’t value gets procrastinated, discarded, postponed, avoided or experiences whatever other kind of neglect you can think of. We always do what we value most. We always protect what we value most. And so therefore our life is really a reflection of what we value most.

For some people we can instantly see that values that are not creating patterns of success. i call these the patterns of poverty. They include values such as immediate gratification, the value to impress others, the value to appear powerful, the desire to be liked.

There are additional values that rob people of success and that can include appetites that can’t be feed with food, drugs, sex, and any other physical indulgence.

And naturally there are ego based values that also keep success from coming your way.

The truth of the matter is after conducting seminars for the last 20 years and having thousands of attendees come through our doors even these values are not what people really want. Most of the above we have been taught by sources outside our true self that these values if you embrace them will bring happiness and fulfillment. Instead the are nothing but counterfeits and imposters in the long run.

The most powerful values come from what I call Authentic of purpose.

When people discover their sense of true purpose their true values appear. Most of these are often about connecting with the true self and connecting with the goodness in other people. (That will be an article for another time.)

But for today I would challenge you to think carefully about what you really want and if you spend some soul-searching time to consider the roots of why you really want it you will be able to discover how genuine your values are. And the shift that you might experience could very well surprise you.

Learn from the best in the best way – Personal Power Mastery by Douglas Vermeeren

douglas Vermeeren Personal Power Mastery Success quote 113

Imagine if there was a million dollars in a brief case for you on the other side of a field. The money is all yours all you have to do is go and pick it up. There is however one catch the field is filled with landmines and you don’t know where they are. Crossing this field will be a very challenging not to mention potentially explosive obstacle.

However you have a few options to get across.

Option 1 – Run like heck an hope you make it okay.
Option 2 – Read a book about it and take it slowly and cautiously on your own.
Option 3 – Have someone who has navigated the field once before tell you what to do from the sidelines.
Option 4 – Have someone who has successfully navigated the field multiple times walk with you and point out the potential dangers and challenges.

Which one would you pick?

When it’ appears in the context its pretty obvious which choice is the one you should select to complete the objective of crossing the field. But when it comes to practice in real life you’d be surprised how many choose the first option of simply “winging it” and making a run for it.

Let me share a little about each of these and then make a case why the final one is the best option in real life too.

Option 1 – Run like heck and hope you make it. This is the way most people approach getting to their goals in real life. Whether its in their career pursuits, building a business, flipping a house, becoming a professional athlete or even a rock star. When it comes to achieving their goals most people try to do it solo without support. They rush in whatever direction with whatever activities they think will help them make progress. This is also known as the school of hard knocks. This can be painful, expensive and time consuming. The are the people that think reading, seminars, coaches, mentors and that kind of thing is a waste of time. They often will say things like, “You’ve got to pay your dues.” and “There’s no substitute for hard work.” Most of the time they never achieve anything great and often never get close to their goals.

Option 2 – Read a book about it and take it slowly and cautiously on your own. – I hope I can share this one in a way that makes sense. I am an avid reader and a strong defender of reading and books. But if we are honest there are some limitations. Many people feel that simply reading a book on a subject makes you an expert. I see this ALL the time with other speakers in my career. they read a book about someone else success and suddenly feel they are qualified to teach others about success. (What a disservice to those they claim to serve. They can’t help others because they aren’t even willing to recognize their own limitations.) While reading a book will give you power there are still limitations. One of the challenges with this option in real life (and this happens with just attending seminars too) is that you learn just enough to make you dangerous so to speak. In other words you will get the information to make you started but what happens if you run up against a situation the book doesn’t cover or the seminar didn’t teach you about? What will you do? You will be stuck until you can get help.

The second part of this is taking it slow and cautiously. And we see this reflected in many people in real life. They slow their progress down to make certain that they have all of the answers they need before they take action. Hopefully that’s not you. But if it is let’s clarify one thing even with the top mentors speaking to you hourly you will still not have all the answers. It is just not possible. You will have to walk by faith if you are going to claim the prize.

No in finishing this option I want to emphatically state that I AM NOT AGAINST READING. I am against reading by itself. To be most effective it needs to be a component of a stronger strategy which we will talk about in a moment.

Option 3 – Have someone who has navigated the field once before tell you what to do from the sidelines. This option is getting better because you have the ability to rely on the experience of someone else who has completed the task. But as this article is entitled, “Learn from the best in the best way” I have to point out that while this is the best option so far there are still limitations. Someone observing you from the sidelines is often not aware of the specific details you are facing and they aren’t always seeing things as you see them in the field. They may not always give you the best advice because they don’t always know you and your particular situation in close up detail. It kind of reminds me of the encouragement that we often hear repeated, “Take a millionaire to lunch.” We’ll on the surface that’s a great idea, but in reality its going to take more than a lunch to get yourself truly on track to make your own million.

Option 4 – Have someone who has successfully navigated the field multiple times walk with you and point out the potential dangers and challenges. This final option is the best. Essentially it is having someone who has successfully accomplished what you are intending to do work with you directly to help you successfully arrive at the same conclusion. Often times this can cost more money than the other options up front but in the end it is actually the least expensive and most productive. In many cases as I have observed attendees to our seminars over the years this is also the option that actually gets the most results. Too often people come through our doors that have been trying the other options for years – but suddenly when they get the courage to actually get someone personally involved in helping them everything finally comes together.

Naturally Using a combination of all of these things will provide value as well so don’t neglect any learning opportunity that will support you on your mission.

There is one last things that I want to share that is important to recognize when it comes to learning and perhaps this is the concept that is closest to the title of this article. “Learn from the best in the best way.” Not all mentors, teachers, coaches, books, seminars youtube videos and learning tools are created equal. The lessons from some “Gurus” Will actually take you backwards and cost you time and money instead of helping you fulfill your purposes. Yes, you can learn from everyone and sometimes those lessons can be the wrong way to do something.

Life is short and your time is limited. Seek out the very best people to learn from and make the commitment to appreciate yourself enough to select the support that will ultimately serve you best.

Challenge: Get out there today and seek out in person mentors and support to help you get to your goals.

Your Will-power starts with your Why-Power! Personal Power Mastery

Your Will-power starts with your Why-Power! Personal Power Mastery
By Douglas Vermeeren, Personal Power Mastery

Douglas Vermeeren – Personal Power Mastery Success quote

Too often I have people that attend my seminars ask about the idea of motivation. Most of their questions and comments revolve around the challenge that have experienced in the past about not being able to stay motivated. They often share how they’ve thought out their goals and they really know what they want. They even confess that the things they have set goals around really are going to serve them best in the long run. They stress in their explanation that they are bewildered by how they just can’t follow the logical plans that were so well-laid.

The challenge does not rest in their desires or even their well-laid plans. The challenge lies in how our brain actually chooses the activities it will support. Without getting into a long explanation this particular post actually addresses a few of the various “powers” we discuss in Personal Power Mastery. I could have easily positioned this topic with The Power of Focus, The Power of Momentum, The Power of Thought, The Power of Values and others. Today I’m going to position this article and solution that I want to discuss squarely on The Power of Values.

To get to the heart of the matter as quickly as possible I’m simple going to share that our actions and motivation only coincidences with our highest values. In other words, we give our attention to the things that are most valuable to us. And by the way that is with every activity through out every moment of the day.

Let me share an example from the lives of one of my students. (But it might as well be my life as I am sometimes guilty of the same thing) One of my students Shane works at home. He is a home based entrepreneur. He has three small children who are now in school but are at home during the summer. Shane loves his business which is web design and social media marketing. However his highest value is his family and especially spending time with his wife and children and seeing them happy.

Recently Shane was telling me about a day at home during the summer. He had a lot of work to do and several clients counting on him with a handful of projects. Just as he was getting started his wife and kids appeared on the scene and pointed out the beautiful sunny day outside. Shane’s highest values are his family and so his attention shifted there.

Within a few moments plans were made to go to the zoo for day. Obviously Shane’s highest value caused him to stop working and he went with the family to the zoo. Thankfully after the kids went to bed Shane was able to catch up on his work.

Thankfully this was a happy ending but for too many people it is not. They are constantly placing their real value on immediate gratification, the current netflix series or even taking a nap. This misplacement of activity is the primary reason most people never accomplish their goals and dreams.

But how do you stay motivated with what matter most to you in the long term? How do you stay focused on the goals that you know will give you best rewards? How do you do what you logically know you should do and keep recommitting to do?

The first thing to understand is the emotional part of your brain is more important than the logical part of your brain. Your brain does not seek out logical activities as the priority. It does seek to satisfy the emotional demands first because those necessities are closely tied to our survival instincts.

So if you want to create more success and stay focused with the logical goals the question really becomes how do you make the Logical more emotional?

There are several techniques that we share in the Personal Power Mastery live sessions but the one I’d like to focus on here is the seek out more important emotional reasons why the goals you’ve chosen are important to you. Why do you really want these things in your life? And the more powerful and emotionally connective your answers for why are the more power you will have to get to your goals.

As the article title infers – Your will-power with be a reflection of your why-power. if you have no reason why, when emotional disruptions appear in your day you will have no will power to stick to the task at hand.

Emotional connections to your goals and dreams help you to create boundaries that keep you on task.

Exercise for today – Consider your top tasks for the week. What do you really need to get done in order to make progress towards your really big goals? Take some time right now and come up with some strong emotional reasons why these activities need to get done.
