Teaching about money in schools

Recently a friend of mine posted a new article on Facebook about how in his area the school system has decided to start teaching about money in the local high school. I think this is a great start as most schools don’t educate students about what ends up being one of the most important life skills that they will ever gain.

My challenge is that whenever these money courses are offer they are general taught by financial institutions or people within that system. Those advisors are trained to invite you to save, invest in specific investment instruments and follow their prescribed pattern. Most of the time people who follow this route maintain an average yet secure income.

That is one route to understanding money.

Why I want to know is why don’t they ever invite the entrepreneur mindset to come in to talk about money. This group far surpasses the institutional people in terms of personal worth and and creativity. They also see money in far different ways that the ‘save and sit on it’ crowd.

If you really want to understand the economics of society you need to invite those who are conducting transactions into the conversation. Just sayin’

Yahoo News is weird – Get this headline: Should Wonder Woman have armpit hair?

Just for those of you who don’t believe me here’s the article:

I don’t get it. It’s not like she’s french.

I think it would be interesting to have a vote. Of course we all already know the answer – no one wants to see Wonder Woman with armpit hair. Thats crazy!

The fact that this is even a question explains why Marvel is making movies that people love while DC keeps missing the mark every time. If they are challenged on such a simple issue of whether Wonder Woman should have armpit hair or not maybe they shouldn’t be making movies. (That must have been a strange and expensive artistic meeting to be a part of.)

The strangest thing is that there are actually nerds online and in this article debating the issue.  first of all are nerds the right people to ask for advice about women. (Very unlikely)

So this is their argument, (This is my paraphrase.)”She lives in a forest and she should have furry pits. And besides she lives with a bunch of chicks so she’s not trying to impress anyone.  Again shows how much nerds don’t know about chicks.

Girls are always in competition with each other. Have you ever seen the looks that two women give each other if they wear the same dress to a party. They won’t even go in the same room with each other. One of them is in the hallway crying and wailing, ‘I’m not going in there. She’s got the exact same dress as me.” While the other one is gripping to her friends how she “hates that bitch” and they are planning how they are going to make her disappear.

The Purpose of your speaking business is positioning

The Speaking Business Multiplier 1.jpgOne of the most important thing that is often forgotten about speaking is that it is really an exercise in positioning. As a speaker you have the ability, if you do it correctly, to position yourself as an authority, expert and trusted adviser to the audiences you address. Most speakers forget the importance of position and that is why most speakers are quickly forgotten soon after the events they speak at.

Position yourself as an expert begins with becoming a master of your subject. Many speakers ask me how do I know which aspect of my subject should I study? There can be so many things to learn about a subject how can you determine what should be included in your content or not? The answer is very simple. What are the problems that your audience is trying to solve. Once you discover the significant problem they are struggling with you can then structure your learning and presentations to seek out and share those solutions. Or naturally as you become highly versed in that area of your expertise you can create solutions that have never been available until you.

Positioning is power. Yet again, most speakers do not consider their speaking assignment very impactful. Each opportunity to share your perspective and voice is an opportunity for positioning. Too many speakers play it safe and keep their opinions to themselves. They avoid controversy. They avoid sharing ideas that rock the boat. They present in ways they have seen others present a million times and avoid taking risks, being creative and offering a change to the status quo. I challenge you to use all of these elements in your positioning.

Expert position is really about standing out and being recognized as unique and different. Unique and different never happens by accident. You must strategically decide who you want to be and what position you want to own. When you know this you can begin to shape your presentations to leave that impression.

decide today who you will be and what you want to be known for. then get busy and start creating it. It’s that simple.

 

The Speaking Business Multiplier – 3 Tips to think about developing content – Douglas Vermeeren

While you’d think that content and acquiring content would at the top of the priority list for people wanting to be considered experts in the field of speaking, coaching and training – it isn’t always. Over the last several decades I have been involved in the personal development business I’ve seen many who just don’t feel that constant preparation, improvement or education is that important. I regularly see speakers who prepare a speech only after they have an event booked and I’ve also seen others who prepared one speech a long time ago and every time (even to the same audience) bring out that same speech. This is a short cut. And although it may be the easy way it will never open up the doors for you to be considered an expert or a person with solutions of any depth.

I suppose it’s very similar to the one hit wonders of the music business. Or better yet like a  pianist with only one key to play. LAME.

Here are 3 thoughts to think about when preparing your content that will help you to position yourself as an expert, be prepared for any event you are called upon without notice (And this happens often for higher level speakers) and lastly, to become profitable as a speaker.

  1. Read, research, watch, listen and learn every single day. I would even suggest multiple times a day. The flow of ideas into your mins on the subject you speak about needs to be constant. Almost to the point of overflow. As it overflows in your mind it will fill the minds of those you present to. In their minds you will be the well from which they know they can gain the answer. The only way that you can become that is if you first fill your mind. An old hindu saying says it best: An empty vessel can fill no other cup. Obviously it goes without saying that from the beginning I hope you have chosen a subject that you are excited about. If you are truly excited about this subject matter you’ll find that this quest for content isn’t a burden but an exciting opportunity. And I should mention if you aren’t cited about your subject it will be very difficult to get others excited about it. 452830868_0f1406ba87_b
  2. Record and sort it as though you were to teach it. When we learn with purpose we retain and record things in a more powerful way than if we to simply read something. I invite all of my students to record the content they are researching as though they had to teach it. As they look at how their research can help and bless the lives of their students they have all found amazing results. One of the most powerful being is that have immediately started to recognize what has been most valuable and practical in their research. They have been able to recognize where in their presentations these new findings have been able to fit. They have also noticed that their level of expertise has risen among their audiences. It really does become clear which speakers are consistently learning and which are just coasting. Naturally as you learn to teach your students will also feel who really cares.online_keyboard_news
  3. Look for ways to share what you are learning outside of your presentation. More and more I am seeing a massive shift in the personal development and speaking industry. No longer are people able to maintain a career simply as “a keynoter.” In order to thrive in this business it is necessary to expand to other platforms and areas such as coaching, mentoring, masterminds, products and an array of other platforms. One of the other necessities is a social media presence. Daily communication to your tribe or community is becoming more and more of an expectation. And the more your visibility and stature in the industry rise the more it is expected of you. Your daily content quests are a great way to find and prepare information to share. It needn’t be long but it definitely needs to be consistent.

Why laugh at the learning curve? Douglas Vermeeren

Today I am in Fort Lauderdale, FL. I will be speaking at an event later today. As I think about some of the things that I could say that would be most useful to the participants who are coming I think about their needs. Many of them are entrepreneurs, some of them are speakers and life coaches, some have home based businesses, there will be network marketers, there will even be students and some people who are either not employed or looking at starting a business.

As I have been sitting here eating my oatmeal and thinking about what would be most valuable to them I let my mind wander past all the experiences I have had that would be valuable to them. I think of some of the people I’ve met and the lessons they have taught me. For some reason my mind stopped on a one person, I’m going to call her Susan. (Not her real name but close.)

Susan wanted to be a speaker. She didn’t have a lot of experience yet so there were a lot of rough edges. But she had a lot of desire. Every time we talked she would take lot sod notes on what she could do. She observed every other speaker she could find and I could tell she was excited and fuelled to get to that next level. Soon she had her chance to get in front of a few groups. Just like when I started the groups were small. (My first speaking event I had 3 people show up.)

I attended her first event and there was about 12. Her second one that I attended had 7. And I am told her third was about the same. Her speech was valuable but not polished.

She was frustrated not with herself but with the numbers who came. She thought that she was ready and the world should have responded. She let those experiences effect her. And rather than laugh at the learning curve she projected the lack of people at those that were helping her. They should have helped her better. They should have filled the room. They gave her false expectations and hope. She fired her mentors. Ultimately you guessed it she shifted from being a speaker to something else where she continues to take the learning curve too seriously.

You may have guessed by now that this is a pattern she had experienced before. A repeated challenge that is destined to repeat again. She had amazing potential but failed to recognize that there is a learning curve, a progress curve and that all development takes time.

frank_maguire_sc_photoFrank is another person I thought about this morning.  He knew how to laugh at the learning curve and as a result he went on to create some pretty amazing things in his life. Whenever a failure or setback or experience was less than he wanted he dug in deeper and recognized it as a temporary station. He did not let the setback or situation define him or put him off track from his dreams and desires. One such business failure he was involved in lost millions and millions of dollars every month for close to 36 months. Yet he knew the idea would work and together with his partners they hung in there. That company today is known as FedEx.

Frank Maguire became one of my personal mentors. Almost like a grandpa to me. He taught me again and again that it is important to expect the learning curve and although he didn’t use these words he implied that you should laugh at it. When you failed or things didn’t flow like they should put on a smile and laugh at your mistakes. Don’t take failure personally or too seriously. It’s gonna happen. And its never as bad as you think its going to be.

Even the best laid plans have challenges and bumps. But more important that the plan is the person behind it. Are you a leader or a limper? To you whine when things don’t flow like you expect or do you accept it and make adjusts to improve each time.

The amazing thing about learning curves that I have learned is that it is in the shape of a J. Success follows and comes in this shape. After you get past the low rolling curve at the bottom of the letter goes straight up. Had Susan recognized where she was on the curve she would have understood that there is always a period of time to pay your dues on the curve. Once that’s through success comes in a very big way. Most people are like Susan and when things don’t flow immediately and powerfully they abandon ship.

They never give themselves a chance to succeed because they never get past the inevitable learning curve.

Don’t make the same mistake. Get committed! Decide that you will hang in there. Go the distance. Be like Rocky and even tough things are tough you keep going. Take the punch and stay standing. You can do it. And it you hang on long enough you will always win.

th-1Howard Putnam former CEO of Southwest airlines once told me that the key to success in his life has always been to keep going when the other stops. It’s not a matter of being smarter, or better looking, or better connected or luckier. It’s mostly a matter of hanging in there especially when it gets hard.

So to conclude today. I just want to say go for it. This is your time!
