Wealth secrets that often forgotten – 3

leave a comment »

As I was writing on my newest book this morning on Wealth and Abundance I was thinking about something interesting one of my mentors told me once. I said to him, “I wanna be rich one day.” He said, “Thinking like that you’ll never get there.” I was really surprised I thought what I said was correct. He said, “It’s not committed enough try again.”

I then said, ” I am Going to be rich. And I am willing to do whatever it takes.”
Again he shook his head, “Not committed enough.” Frustrated I said, “Okay what’s better than that.”

He said, “I am rich and this is what I am doing right now.”

It was a profound lesson for me. True story.

Why does everyone want to be a speaker or coach? The harshest and perhaps meanest post I have ever written. By Douglas Vermeeren, The Speaking Business Multiplier

leave a comment »

Why is it that everyone wants to be a speaker or a coach? Do they think they really have something to teach or are they thinking its an easy ride? And if they have something to teach today are they really committed to step up and put in the effort to make themselves valuable long term. In my more than a decade as a professional and profitable speaker I’ve seen lots of successes and miserable failures from people that felt they wanted to be speakers. One of the biggest challenges that the failures all had is they thought they were ready to teach and were not. Or they became inspired by someone else and tried to duplicate that person in terms of personality or teaching. A common example of this has been seen by all (you’ve seen it too) where someone read the secret and thought they knew enough to teach it or where someone felt the power of Tony Robbins and then tried to imitate Tony. 15-motivational-quotes-from-tony-robbins-620x355A feeling of inspiration is not necessarily an invitation to duplicate. If you are going to be successful in this business the first thing you need to realize is that your success will be found only as you find your individual and unique voice. Impersonators, imitators and plagiarists never rise higher than the pioneer. You have got to be an original.

Having said that the other important thing about being an original means being valuable. You need to solve real problems and have real solutions. You also need to add to the conversation. In order to add to the conversation you need to know the conversation and understand it well. It’s not enough to read one or two books or what a movie or youtube video and think you are an expert. I recommend to my students that they need to study their subject matter at least one hour per day. No Holidays.  I know of top professional speakers that are spending far more than that. If you want to be an expert you’ve got to know what everyone is saying and develop your own unique points of view on the subject. This is a full time job people. Yesterday I spoke with a husband and wife couple and the husband wants to be a speaker or coach. He has achieved no real great success in his life but feels he has something to teach others. In addition, he has spent lots of the family money pursuing other interests and trying a variety of business that have all reached minimal levels of either success or failure. If you are int he same position and considering that you want to be a speaker or leader to others. The first thing I am going to say is reconsider. You really aren’t ready. But if you must persist before you spend the money and effort to come and play with us let’s see if you can actually consistently put in an hour into your subject each day for a month. If you can’t do it – we don’t want you to come and share the stage with those of us that do this for a living. You are not committed enough and you’re getting in our way. You are also doing a disservice to your audience. They deserve better than someone who is there from an ego point of view or to make a quick buck.

Maybe this is the harshest rant I’ve ever published but it is not uncommon for this industry to attract people who feel that speaking is just a matter of talking and sharing personal stories. People expect more and there’s no need for you to waste everyones time. I recently read an article on how trust levels for speakers, coaches and gurus are losing a lot of ground in the marketplace when it comes to credibility and trust. I believe the reason why is that there are too many people out there who don’t really have any value. If you are considering this as a career take a careful look at what you really offer. And if you find yourself lacking either own it and fix it or find something else to do.

Recently I was at an event where a lady approached me after I spoke and told me of her aspirations to be a life coach. It didn’t take long to understand that her personal life was a mess, her financial life was on the verge of collapse, her relationships were very messy and she had substance abuse challenges. I don’t understand where people like this can even consider life coaching. the role of coach must be very misunderstood. Your responsibility is to lead people to higher ground. It would seem that anyone she would encounter as potential coaching clients would generally be in a better position that she would be. Unreal.

I want to dispel the rumours that this is an easy job. Like anything else there highs and lows. There are moments that are easy and days where the woe is hard. You can’t just have the happy moments you have got to be willing to put in the efforts as well. If you ultimately choice to be a speaker (And I haven’t discouraged you) then by all means do it – but get committed to being the best you can be. Don’t settle to just do the job. Become an expert and a source people can trust and have confidence in. And strive everyday to become better. If you teach personal development or self improvement practice it damn it.

End rant.

The Importance of reading Great Books!

The importance of reading great books!
By Douglas Vermeeren

Often people ask me what’s the one single thing that they could do to elevate their mindset, inject new and effective ideas into their business and increase their ability to get to their most important goals. The answer is really simple read more great books.

As I interviewed and conducted research into more than 400 of the worlds top achievers one of the biggest common attributes among them was that they were avid readers of great books. They recognized the importance of learning and made every effort to do so. I want to clarify that it wasn’t just a matter of reading anything – they specifically chose good books that would lift them higher. As every moment of your day is precious you must also chose your reading the same way.

I need to clarify I am not against reading for entertainment. There are some amazing and brilliant stories. But the kind of reading I am talking about is what I saw first hand develop people into leaders. The sections at the bookstore that they frequent most are business, self-help, economics and biography. I have tried to do the same. What you fill your mind with most determines what you will think about most. What you think about most determines what you feel about and decide to take action on. When you fill your mind with powerful strategies you are no longer acting haphazardly to create results. You actually have strategies that work and will get you what you are looking for.

The bottom line is that if you don’t know how to do a thing you can learn it from books.

A second highly valuable side effect of reading books from the best minds available is that in a sense they become your teachers, mentors and even peers. You may heard it said that you become like those you spend time with. Each page you spend in a book with an expert gives you a deeper relationship with them. Their thoughts become synergized with yours and new results are created altogether.

In conducting my interviews with the worlds top achievers I tried to read books these individuals had written before I met them. This also gave me great insight into what I need to learn from them when we had a chance to spend face to face time in real life. Many of the success strategies they had written about in their books I was able to learn even deeper when I saw how they implemented the strategy in real life.

Books also have a power and magic that videos and audios can’t capture. The learning style of reading is altogether different than just watching a video or learning. Watching and learning have great merit as well. But in a book a reader can progress at their own pace, take notes, annotate and allow the physical written word to imprint in their mind. Studies have demonstrated that the power of recall is often more powerful with information that is read versus information that is watched or heard.

Reading also allows you to pick up the pace when learning. You can progress at whatever speed you choose and you can even jump to things that you want to learn immediately. When I first started in personal development I tried to get my hands on and red everything I could get my hands on. In the short space of three months I once read just over 100 books. That was a little over one a day. I started early in the day and read through the day every chance I got and then read into the night. It was a push to do it and I certainly don’t run at that pace now. In fact, instead of trying to get through books quickly I have actually tried the reverse. I go slow and aim not for page count but for pay understanding. Recently I even decided to read a book three times in a row before putting it back on the book shelf. Speed isn’t the goal. Comprehension and implementation is.

As I mentioned reading great books was a common attribute of all the top achievers I encountered and that fact alone should convince you to get reading more. What you learn determines what you can earn. And great books are the best place to start.

PRESS RELEASE – POWERFUL THINKING POWERFUL RESULTS to be a TV show

Powerful Thinking Powerful Results

Powerful Thinking Powerful Results

Since the late 1990’s Douglas Vermeeren has been conducting the Powerful Thinking Powerful Results seminars through out North America. The program has focused on how thinking an modern neuroscience shape our day to day activities and help us achieve the results and outcomes we want.  This program has made a difference to many professions in the financial planning industry, real estate industries, among sales professionals and more!  This highly sought after program has been recognized for continuing education credits in may fields and has been the subject of many articles and books. But now things are about to get bigger!

Vermeeren’s representatives have just confirmed that an agreement has been reached for Powerful Thinking Powerful results to launch as a TV show on two national networks in the United States and Canada. “The commitment at this stage is for 20 Episodes.”  Stan Romero, press agent for Vermeeren confirmed. “The show will share many of the lessons that Doug has been teaching in the program, but there will also be a lot of new things that no one has seen before.”  The new things he is refer to  have a lot to do with the lessons on the brain and neuroscience involved. “In last decade so much of what we know an understand about the brain and how we process information has changed. This show will provide the most cutting edge research available and share the most current methods to implement it into your life that we can find.”

Douglas Vermeeren, who is also known as the creator of  film The Opus, expressed his excitement at the deal. “I think media is being very under used in the personal development world. These tools can be used to teach in such powerful ways. Not to mention the sizes of the audiences they can reach. It is astounding.” On the surface this may appear true, but why didn’t it work for Tony Robbins. He can fill seminars with thousands of people but his television show, ‘Breakthrough’ on NBC was cancelled after just two episodes. Is the world ready for personal development on TV?

Vermeeren and his team think so. “It’s unfortunate that Tony’s show did not make it. I keep hearing from many people that they liked it and what I saw I also liked. What will make us different? What will help us stick around? We are trying a different model and a different approach, but that may not guarantee us success either. But we’ll do our best and see what happens.”

Currently there are no confirmed dates for the airing of the first episode, but all sources confirm that production has begun. We will post on this story as it develops.
