Success comes from Habits – Bam #13

Success comes form habits
By Douglas Vermeeren

habits-wordle1

There are many people around us each day who have accomplished a high level of success. We sometimes see them on tv or read about them in best selling books. When we see these people it is not uncommon for us to feel a sense of awe and literally explain “wow!” Often times we may be tempted to look at these individuals and think that they are lucky or somehow endowed with some unique magical attributes that have brought success to them.

By creating this idea that there are skills unique to these individuals it gives us an escape route or rather an exit to be able to excuse ourselves from attempting and accomplishing the same levels of success. While there are certainly unique skills at a high level of success the truth is that they did not arrive in a magical way.

In addition, most of these people were just like you and I at the beginning. They just added one ingredient that made those skills stronger, better and powerful. That one ingredient is to turn the actions they knew they needed to accomplish their desired success into habit.

habit

Habit is the key to creating lasting success. We literally become what we repeatedly think about and do.

make-our-habits

But the answer is not that simple. Developing habits takes hard work, dedication, consistent effort, refining, recommitting when things don’t go well, and staying on track especially when things go right.

Developing the right habits can also be an elusive journey. Once you know what you want to develop as a success in your life how can you determine which habits you need to develop. The Chinese philosopher Confucius declared that the very best way to develop wisdom is to imitate. In modern parlance we call this modelling. If you wish to create success in a specific area you need to find role models who have accomplished success in the same area and duplicate their habits. Developing habits therefore begins with intense study to identify the habits that you will need to create the same success.

Often I encounter people who pick and choose elements of those habits that they will duplicate and other things that the decide are not needed. Maybe the things that they reject they fell are too hard or inconvenient. Maybe they feel like some of those habits will be too difficult to implement or take too much time to develop. What they experience in the end is only partial success. When you pick and choose and decide to do only that which is easy you get less than the result of your mentors.

Imagine if you wanted to be a heart surgeon and you decided to only attend half the classes. In doing so you would rob yourself of the lessons you would need from the entire experience. When developing the habits of success you cannot pick and choose. You have got to become engaged and immersed.

habits

Developing new habits is hard work. Anytime change is required the commitment that comes with those changes is massive. It requires you to literally be obsessed with the new destination. You have got to establish a strong WHY. That WHY must be bold and emotionally charged. We only stay engaged with the activities that have significant meaning to us. Especially when the going gets hard. When you have a powerful and emotionally charged why it is more likely that you will stay on track and continue to practice the habits that will lead you to success.

There is a statement attributed to Michaelangelo. He allegedly said to someone complimenting him as a master, “It you knew how hard I had to work you wouldn’t call me a master.” Whether the event actually happened or the statement is true I can’t say. But what I have noticed as I have worked with top achievers around the world is that the statement is true. Every master started as a disaster. To get to high performance levels much hard work is required.

My challenge to you is to identify several new habits you need to develop in order to start moving towards your most significant goals. Push forward and recognize that habits are also developed in much the same way as turning on a dimmer switch. You aren’t going to get it right all at once but it will get better and better with hard work and dedication! Get started now!

Do you want to achieve more? How did you start your day? BAM #12
By Douglas Vermeeren

All success is a matter of habit. What you repeatedly do determines the outcomes and results you will experience. It’s as simple as that. Or is it?

Most of us know what we want. We also have desires to make our lives better. We also have relatively clear ideas of some of the immediate things that we can do better and need to improve. So what’s keeping us from implementing these elevating ideas and strategies? What’s keeping us from locking the habits of success into our daily routine?

The answer may surprise you.

All success is found in how you start your day. If you own you morning you’ll own your day.

Over the last decade I have had the opportunity to study the lives of more than 400 of the worlds top achievers. Among this group were world class athletes, top business leaders, celebrities and high powered entrepreneurs. As I looked for the elements of success I looked at things both on a macro level (meaning the big picture) but I also was very interested in thing on the micro level (meaning the tiniest of details.)

I am a firm believer that the macro is a composition of the micro and that the biggest successes are found in the smallest moments, decisions and activities. As I tried to find a common denominator among the small details there was one striking feature among all of them.

It was how they started their day. Top achievers and successful people start their day very differently than the average person. I believe this difference sets off a chain reaction that allows them to achieve not only more through out the day – but to achieve the things that add the most progress and advantage to their day as well.

Here’s a list of ten things I noticed about how they start their day.

Early riser – They begin by rising earlier than most. In the early hours of the morning they have solitude to dial into the things that are most important to them without the distractions of the day. It is interesting to notice that those who remain in bed and hit the snooze button to start their day also hold back and hesitate to get actively involved later in the day. Holding back rather than pouncing forward are a habit that starts immediately.

Self work – The top achievers that I observed started the morning by working out both their body and their mind. I recently read a report on how Barack Obama, President of the United States begins his day before any meetings with a 45 minute work out. Oprah Winfrey begins with a morning meditation. Howard Schultz of Starbucks begins the morning with a long walk with his dogs. Exercise and contemplation are both activities that put you in an empowered state for the remainder of the day.

Avoid criticism, negativity or urgency – The world around us has great power to influence us. Often the information, personalities and events we come into contact with first thing in the morning shape how we will view the rest of the day and direct the energy with which we view our circumstances. Top achievers that I observed actually do not start out the day with the news or by checking email. They set their own emotional temperature before they accept the influence of others.

checking-email

Determine their highest priorities and values – Some of the top achievers I studied did this the night before as well and then reviewed it again in the morning. After taking their own time for exercise and reflection the top achievers then reviewed their day and prioritized how it would be spent. They evaluated things not in terms of creating a to do list but by evaluating what needs to be done to move them closer to their big picture goals. They often focused on what they really wanted not just stuff that needed to be completed. Most average people fill their day with habitual activities that don’t move them closer to their goals. They live their day in reaction mode rather than proactively. As a result most people spend their day putting out fires and not accomplishing the things that inspired or encouraged them. Steve Jobs was well-known for asking this question in the morning, “Would I do what I’m about to do if today was last day on earth?” He found if he answered no too often he was on the wrong path.

Steve-Jobs1

How we start our morning is an important part of setting out how our day will move forward. Days are what make up our life. We need to treat each day as a valuable gift. When we use these small units of time as a tool to achieve what’s most important to us we create a live that is powerful and exciting.

How will you start your mornings going forward? Will you change the routines and habits that you currently have? If you do you’ll find that everything will change. So what are you waiting for? Get started!

Decisions and the power to change everything – BAM#11
By Douglas Vermeeren

You are just a new decision away from new possibilities in your life. All things change in the moment of decision. Many people recognize this truths yet very few people make real decisions to start living the life they’d prefer and feel they deserve. Why is that? And for those that do attempt to make a new decision why is it that they have so much difficulty making those decisions stick?

One of the definitions I like regarding decision is that it is a conclusion drawn after consideration. So if now is the time you’d like to bring some of the less desirable situations in your life to a conclusion this article is for you.

Here are 3 tips to keep in mind when deciding to move forward on what you want in life.

1)What you expect you get. As you embark on this new decision you need to expect to succeed. You need to expect that people and things will fall into line to help you. You need to expect that when things get difficult you will find a way through and you will succeed. Expecting tough moments and preparing ahead of time mentally is important. Most people stop trying to achieve their goals because they hit a difficult moment. Expect that those moment will arrive and have a strategy for breaking through. (More on strategies later.)

2)Decisions are not decisions until they have action attached. When action is attached to a decision it gains momentum. As you begin to move forward and take a step into the unknown the universe conspires to help you. Action always has consequence and bold action towards good things always comes with reward.

Your mind also recognizes the forward movement into action and develops confidence that you will actually achieve what you decided to do.

In our Personal Power Mastery seminar we talk about the importance of consistent progress. If you add new and regular activities that take you in the direction of your decision you will stay motivated to continue forward. People are happiest when they are progressing and there is a lot of strength gaining if you recognize your progress towards what you’ve decided to do. In the seminar we encourage our students to have 5 action steps towards their decision each day.

unknown

3)Own the future destination of your decision in the present tense. How we think determines ultimately what we believe and will take action on. If your decision is to achieve the goal of becoming a top sales person in your company you have got to begin by saying to yourself that you are worthy to be there today. You have got to see yourself as the person who has accomplished this goal.

More important that what other people say to us is what we say to ourselves. There is an ancient saying attributed to the Samurai which says that, “When we conquer the enemy within, no enemy from without can destroy us.” While it is true that others may encourage or discourage us their words have limited power until we decide to repeat them to ourselves with certainty.

Your words must support this. You’ll have to eliminate all fluffy conversations where you say, “I’d like to…” “I hope to…” “I should…” “I could…” “I Would…” You need to start thinking and speaking in terms of “I am.”

Here’s one bonus idea that can be added to this point. In the Personal Power Mastery seminars we call it the law of probability. If you want to achieve the decisions you make quickly and in the most powerful lasting way possible you need to surround yourself with the people and knowledge that will make it more likely you will reach that destination. This also includes often getting to knew locations and activities.

The reasons why so few people get to live the life of their dreams is not that they abstain from making difficult decisions. It’s actually the easy ones that they don’t make. Rather than choose the life they want they accept the situation they are in. And nothing changes.

Go get what you want today. It’s a new day and a new opportunity!

Douglas Vermeeren announces new Brand and seminar series

unspecified
A lot of people have been writing in to me about my recent posts around the BAM movement. (Be Awesome Movement) The comments have been encouraging and exciting. I have received several comments asking specifically why I don’t share more of these ideas in my seminars. The truth is that I used to. In fact, these are the kinds of things that I taught when I first started in personal development and I loved it. I felt these lessons really made a difference in the lives of those I was teaching and it made me feel good to help so many people on a personal level.

I kind of gravitated away from this over time because most event organizers wanted me to teach about some of the successes I was having in business and financially. I like teaching those things too and I probably still will from time to time.

PPM logo

But today I would like to announce that I am introducing my new brand PERSONAL POWER MASTERY. The tools included in the initial program will share strategies on how to:

Create a more inspiring life
Make more effective decisions
Get those decisions to stick when things in your life are difficult
Overcome limiting beliefs permanently
The true way goals are set and achieved (Which surprisingly I haven’t found anyone teaching yet.)
Set up effective boundaries to stay positive in a negative world
Create more abundance in your life
Improve your relationships at business and at home
Take charge of your situation and create the results you want in all areas of your life
Recognize how your thoughts are becoming things
What the law of probability is and how is changes everything
Why top achievers success where others failure

And much more.

And that is what I’m choosing to focus on in level 1. I am excited about this content because I know from experience with past student – IT IS LIFE CHANGING!

As a result of this material:
I have a student who repaired a relationship that was destined for divorce.
I have a student lose close to 200 pounds and keep it off.
I have a student who developed a 6 figure business directly coming out of a bankruptcy.
I have a student who immediately increased his sales closing rate by 65%
I have a student who overcame substance addictions and suicidal thoughts
I have a student who grew his client list to the extent where he received two massive promotions in three months.

unspecified-1

There have been so many success stories with this material. It is unique and powerful. It will change your life too.

My invitation to you is to register for a personal power event in your city and come and learn for yourself. I look forward to meeting you soon!

You are in control – That’s why you can be awesome BAM #6

Get-Inspired-at-Work-Featured1

An Awesome life is living your life by decision. You are where you want to be, doing the things that excite you, inspire you and bring out the best in you and in those around you.

It’s not uncommon to hear people say that something was not their fault, they were the victim of circumstances, they had no choice or that someone else made them do something. Often one of these phrase is their reason that they are not taking accountability for their own lives or their justification for doing nothing.

Essentially these excuses do three things:

The first is that they eliminate the necessity to make choices. Choices in life are often difficult. Sometimes it is possible to make a wrong choice. When we make a choice or a decision something in your life will change. Change is not always easy. Change is also unpredictable and frightening. You are stepping into the unknown and entering a new situation you have never encountered before. Rather than face this fear or potentially make a bad choice people with a victim mentality choose to make an excuse instead. What they don’t realize is that not making a choice is a choice for naught. In other words when they do not make a choice of yes they are automatically saying no. When they make no choice at all it is indeed a choice.

If you aren’t proactively making a choice to reach out for an awesome life you are automatically making a choice to settle for average.

There is a big lie that many believe and that is that if we don’t take action and make a choice we get to start where we are. The truth is the world around you is changing a lightening speed. If you don’t make a choice you get left behind. Nothing is ever going to stay the same. Think of technology as a great example. Blockbuster video tried to stay with the model of renting dvds from a brick and mortar store while everything was shifting online. The ignored the outside signals and chose to try and resist change. What happened to them?

The second is that excuses release you from accountability. (Or so you think.) There are two kinds of sins in this world. Sins of commission which are things you do wrong by your actions or words. Then there are sins of omission, things you knew better and you should have done but you chose not to. You mean you can do something wrong by not taking action? Absolutely.Did you know that neglect is actually a form of abuse? Neglect is a sin of omission. Not only do people get hurt when those who have the ability to help do nothing you are violating one of the laws of being awesome – leave things better than you found them. Imagine if you knew a bank was going to be robbed and you had the power to either stop them or at least report it to someone and yet you did not. Would you be guilty of what would happen next? YES. Under the California Penal code 31 it is called aiding and abetting a crime. (Other areas have similar laws.) Under this law you can be charged for knowing and not doing anything, even if you were not present when the crime took place.

Edmund Burke put it best when he said, “The only thing needed for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” The same can be said of your life if you do nothing – you get nothing. It’s that simple.

Lastly, some think that excuses keep them from having to work hard. There is an old saying when it comes to money (but applies to many other things too.) It goes like this: “You can pay now and play later or you can play now and pay later with interest.” Life always has a way of requiring you to work hard for the things you have or wish to create. Some people look for short cuts and in the end paying far more than they needed to. The best way as with things in life is make payment instalments. In other words pay as you go. When you make a commitment to an awesome life you make payments in regularly along the way. An awesome life is built one brick at a time and that’s what secures it in place. The requirement is consistent effort and diligent care.

Those making excuses mistakenly feel that they are excusing themselves from these efforts. What you needed to create today becomes an emergency tomorrow when you need in the future.

In conclusion I want to point out that you are in control. If you have been taking short cuts and making excuses in the past you can change your approach right now.If you know in your heart of things that you need to make choices about and let go of excuses holding you back – do it! The present is called the present because it really is a gift. Now is the best time to get started living the life you deserve and want. So why not get started?
