As people it is our human nature to select the activities and habits in our life to lead with our highest values. One of the disappointments that we create for ourselves is that we try to fool ourselves into chasing and pursuing things that don’t matter to us at deepest levels. We often pursue the wrong things because we take messages from those around us or the media as to what we are told we should enjoy and appreciate. Authenticity to our highest values will create results and happiness.

This can be seen in immediate gratification choices too. People grab what they think they want in the short term rather than what they really value in the long term.

Immediate gratification choices rarely add to our satisfaction in the long term. Most of the time they actually create regrets. They are generally based on what we value in the short term rather than support our long term vision of who we want to be and what we want to have. Those are long term decisions.

Most powerful opportunities and moments of greatness appear as people focus on sticking close tot heir long term values.

Make some decisions today that will allow you to identify your long term values as they manifest themselves each day as the decisions that you need to make. If you decide before the moment of decision arrives you will begin to see greater success!

What is your business model? The Speaking Business Multiplier

What is your Business Model?

By Douglas Vermeeren, The Speaking Business Multiplier

Many speakers want to create a successful and profitable business. The reality is that there is a lot of competition out there and only a small portion of speakers are actually even able to do this full time let alone build a prosperous business. There are a few things that you can do to increase your chances for success and the first thing would be to determine the business model you are going to use for your speaking business.

Early in my business career I had an experience that may be useful to share. In my late teens I had an idea for a business. I had a family friend that expressed he might be willing to help me launch it. He invited me to assemble my materials and come see him. I decided to get busy and build a business plan. I borrowed books form the library and got busy assembling what I thought a business plan looked like. I’ll never forget the night before I was at the local Kinkos putting the finishing touches on the plan until two a.m. adding colour diagrams and images. I put in a lot of work.

The next day when I brought it for him to take a look at he didn’t even open it up. Instead he asked one question. Where are the transactions in your business? He then explained that while a business plan was useful it was only a guide and often changed with the marketplace conditions, challenges faced by the business and many other factors. However if I knew where the transactions were I could recognize what activities where going to make my money.

So today I’m not going to tell you how to build you business specifically but I want you to think about where your transactions are. Here’s a small list some of my students came up with at on of our High Profit Speaker events:

Can’t vs Won’t – Douglas Vermeeren

leave a comment »

I have often heard people say that they just can’t be successful. They then share a list of reasons why it’s just too tough to be successful beginning with everything from their upbringing to education to resources to a lack of opportunities.

Douglas Vermeeren ppm 55Upon closer examination the ideas they share are all excuses. They actually are no different than a lot of the obstacles other people who have achieved success before them have faced and overcome.

The real reason why these people ‘can’t’ get to the success they want is the word ‘won’t.’ They won’t do it and it’s not a matter of circumstances it’s a matter of laziness.

It’s much easier for some people to share excuses than it is to take action. When you take action not only is there the prospect of hard work, there is also the possibility that things may not work out as you had hoped for. That could me embarrassment, loss and even some pain. (I do want to point out that pain is last on the list. It is very rare that a failure actually brings high levels of pain with it. And we will talk about that in a future post. Most of the time there is ZERO physical pain, but a degree of mental discomfort as you realize that you fell short of your goal.) One of the things that most people don’t realize is that when they fall short they miss seeing the progress that they actually did make.

So the next time you are on the fence about whether you are going to move forward towards your goals ask what’s keeping you from getting started. Is it really that you ‘can’t’ or is it that you ‘won’t?’

Douglas Vermeeren – What are you looking for?

leave a comment »

What do you spend your time doing? Especially when you are surfing the internet. What do you look for? What you seek out in your spare time, when no one is watching or when you are not responsible to report back to anyone? What you seek out on your own without prodding or supervision of others reveal much about what your most important goals in your life are.

Douglas Vermeeren PPM 36Are you on a quest to make yourself better? Are you seeking to improve yourself?

If you are dissatisfied with the outcomes you are experiencing in life it can be traced directly back to what you look for in life. If you are genuine and committed to making your life better you will be seeking it out in the smallest moments of your life.

That which simply distracts or entertains will never fulfill. We always feel best as we are striving for progress. The more massive the action the more fulfilled and powerful we feel. Strive to be more! Reach for your best! Make yourself into the YOU that ou dream about! That is the YOU that you deserve!

Douglas Vermeeren – Are you a slave to a proactive person?

leave a comment »

Reactive people are always slaves to proactive people. Think about it. The proactive person is the one who starts a company and if you are reactive he is your boss. The Proactive person in a relationship knows what they want and moves towards it, while the reactive person is compliant. (And because of that often a toxic nag and complainer.) The proactive person is a leader while the reactive is the follower. And the list could go on.

Douglas Vermeeren ppm 33

Everywhere in reality those who are proactive enlist the help of the reactive. Often the proactive will say and experiences situations where they are unemployable. They have either made too much money or have too much drive to fit in as an employee. No one can pay them what they believe they could make on their own. Once a proactive person has experienced what they can create on their own they never dare return to reactive situation where they allow another person to dictate the activities of their day.

Each person has areas in their life where they are more proactive and reactive. My challenge to you today is to consider what areas of your life you could be more proactive with. In each area you choose to become more proactive and self-reliant your freedom grows.

Douglas Vermeeren – Our best self gives us our best outcomes.

Often the decisions we make day to day come either from habit (the decisions that we always make without thinking) or our of crisis or necessity (urgent pressing matters that need our attention.) As a result the outcomes that we experiences and the consequences they bring pretty much keep us where we have always been or put us in a state of stress. Very seldom are accidental decisions likely to create powerful outcomes for us.

Douglas Vermeeren PPM 31As decisions are the important transition moment of bring our thoughts into reality it is important that the important ones be made with care. We cannot randomly approach important issues and expect that they will take us to our best results.

Within each of us is a better self. We have caught glimpses of that person from time to time. We know he or she is there and quite frankly eager to get out. When we are our best self we feel great and inspired. We know that this best self has important contributions to make to our wellbeing and the world around us.  However to have that best-self come forward requires effort. Our best self doesn’t automatically appear unless we proactively decide to allow them forward.

Most often we settle to have our average self solve problems quickly because we are Impatient.  We allow our average self to maintain relationships because its quicker. We let our average self rush through our day because they are more or less efficient and its comfortable.

While this may work occasionally it rarely gives us the life we really want and deserve.

You will soon find that getting your best self to make decisions will make your life easier and more rewarding although it requires more effort at first.

The next time you are making an important decision ask yourself am I settling with the choice my average self is making or is my best self choosing the best path?

Warning: Mos tot the time the decisions your best self would make will take more time, more effort and more commitment. But as the old saying goes it’s better to do something right the first time than to have to repeat it.
