The importance of reading great books!
By Douglas Vermeeren

Often people ask me what’s the one single thing that they could do to elevate their mindset, inject new and effective ideas into their business and increase their ability to get to their most important goals. The answer is really simple read more great books.

As I interviewed and conducted research into more than 400 of the worlds top achievers one of the biggest common attributes among them was that they were avid readers of great books. They recognized the importance of learning and made every effort to do so. I want to clarify that it wasn’t just a matter of reading anything – they specifically chose good books that would lift them higher. As every moment of your day is precious you must also chose your reading the same way.

I need to clarify I am not against reading for entertainment. There are some amazing and brilliant stories. But the kind of reading I am talking about is what I saw first hand develop people into leaders. The sections at the bookstore that they frequent most are business, self-help, economics and biography. I have tried to do the same. What you fill your mind with most determines what you will think about most. What you think about most determines what you feel about and decide to take action on. When you fill your mind with powerful strategies you are no longer acting haphazardly to create results. You actually have strategies that work and will get you what you are looking for.

The bottom line is that if you don’t know how to do a thing you can learn it from books.

A second highly valuable side effect of reading books from the best minds available is that in a sense they become your teachers, mentors and even peers. You may heard it said that you become like those you spend time with. Each page you spend in a book with an expert gives you a deeper relationship with them. Their thoughts become synergized with yours and new results are created altogether.

In conducting my interviews with the worlds top achievers I tried to read books these individuals had written before I met them. This also gave me great insight into what I need to learn from them when we had a chance to spend face to face time in real life. Many of the success strategies they had written about in their books I was able to learn even deeper when I saw how they implemented the strategy in real life.

Books also have a power and magic that videos and audios can’t capture. The learning style of reading is altogether different than just watching a video or learning. Watching and learning have great merit as well. But in a book a reader can progress at their own pace, take notes, annotate and allow the physical written word to imprint in their mind. Studies have demonstrated that the power of recall is often more powerful with information that is read versus information that is watched or heard.

Reading also allows you to pick up the pace when learning. You can progress at whatever speed you choose and you can even jump to things that you want to learn immediately. When I first started in personal development I tried to get my hands on and red everything I could get my hands on. In the short space of three months I once read just over 100 books. That was a little over one a day. I started early in the day and read through the day every chance I got and then read into the night. It was a push to do it and I certainly don’t run at that pace now. In fact, instead of trying to get through books quickly I have actually tried the reverse. I go slow and aim not for page count but for pay understanding. Recently I even decided to read a book three times in a row before putting it back on the book shelf. Speed isn’t the goal. Comprehension and implementation is.

As I mentioned reading great books was a common attribute of all the top achievers I encountered and that fact alone should convince you to get reading more. What you learn determines what you can earn. And great books are the best place to start.

Our Natural Way is Negative – Bam#9

Our natural way is negative – BAM# 9
By Douglas Vermeeren

stop-negativity

It doesn’t take long to see the negativity in the world around us. It seems everywhere you go there is negativity reported in the media, negative posts about people on facebook, gossip slander, haters and trolls online and whispering criticism at work, school and even in homes. It is a very difficult world to navigate if you are hoping to stay positive and surround yourself with inspiring people. Yet it is possible and even when surrounded with negative people it is possible to stay positive if you recognize why negativity is such a big part of our life.

Much of our tendency to become negative can be easily traced back to our human ancestors. Negativity is a form of survival. In order to stay alive our early human ancestors had to be very aware of threats tot heir survival and existence. As a result they had to become suspicious of things that we take for granted. In a world where so many things could be a threat it became necessary to be on the defensive. I guess you could say that our ancestors became so good at it that it became par tot our natural out look.

As things evolved and progressed survival became easier but the habit of being on guard stayed with us. Our environment – parents, community, society – had been trained to be on the look out for negativity and was determined to point it out. Often times the intention is still to protect those we interact with. Think of the last time you spoke ill of someone else to others. Was it specifically to bash the person being talked about it was it to protect the person you were talking to. In my case, I was at an event and someone told me about the history of another speaker. They warned me by illustrating a negative experience they had had with this person. Naturally you and I are wise enough to recognize that there are two sides to every story and often times simple misunderstandings can be blown out of proportion publicly and privately. But I did recognize as this person spoke to me that their interest was more in line to protect me rather than destroy the person I was being warned about.

So how can we control our response to the negativity around us? How can we remain focused on the positive How can we be inspiring ourselves? How can we shine like a light in a tunnel of darkness?

I have two suggestions.

1.Recognize the negativity for what it is and where it’s coming from. In doing so I want to be very clear! This does not mean endorsing it. This does not mean participating to empathize with the other person. This does not mean feeding it in any way. In fact, recognizing the negativity is as simple as saying that you see what’s happening and what the source is. It’s like wet paint. It’s possible to know the paint is wet without touching it. Especially if the sign is big and clear. (But just like with the wet paint the temptation to touch is there. Don’t touch.)

2. Remove yourself. Continuing the analogy of the wet paint you would stick your fingers in it and draw pictures or sit down in the paint. You would leave it alone. Like the paint the minute you touch it it is on you too. Negativity also sticks to those who stick their fingers in it. Often times it may feel difficult to remove yourself. Especially when the person sharing the negativity has you engaged in a conversation. However I have found that if you don’t feed their negativity or endorse what they are saying they soon discontinue. (As a side note it has been interesting to feel the emotion that accompanies this awkward moment when the other person doesn’t engage in the negativity. It’s slightly embarrassing and often the person being negative tries to backtrack or recall what has been said. These emotions alone should give you evidence to recognize that this kind of talk is not on the right track.)

3.Realign yourself. Once you have left the negative situation it is important to realign yourself to your positive state and mission. This is something I recommend you do often anyways as there are so many times in a day that we interact with negative circumstances and situations that often we don’t even know we’ve encountered it.Realigning yourself is almost like washing off whatever negativity happened to sneeze on you without your control. You don’t want to be influenced by the negativity in any way.

Remaining positive in a negative world requires effort. It also requires constant addition of positive to your life. One analogy I like to use in our seminars in regards to being positive is this. Everyone is like a glass of water that is full of everything we let into our life. Most people have a mixture of positive and negative. This glass is also the lens through which we see the world. (But more on that later.) The glass is full and the only way to get more positive than negative and to keep the negative out is to fill the glass so full of positive that there is no room for negative.

Glass-of-Water

My challenge to you is to find more positive today and fill your glass with positive everyday. And every time you encounter negative follow the escape and cleaning route outlined above – Recognize, Remove, Realign.

happyfaceAwesome Happiness

by Douglas Vermeeren

A recent study on happiness supports the same findings we arrived at with the Be Awesome Movement. (#BeAWESOMEMovement)

The study focused on the two major areas people spend money. Those two areas are on purchasing tangible objects and purchasing experiential activities or experiences.  That same study found that while purchasing objects provided an instant rise in happiness levels, those levels were fleeting and disappeared quickly. In other words after the object was purchased and now considered a potion it was taken for granted and contributed very little to happiness factors.

On the other hand purchasing experiences or experiential activities provided for longer and more sustained happiness.

In the Be Awesome Movement we have also found that creating memorable experiences creates memorable memories both of which contribute to happiness. Objects contribute more towards satisfaction than lasting happiness.

So keep this in mind next time you have a purchasing choice to make. Don’t just buy stuff. Spend your money on things which you can experience like a trip, or some tickets to an event or something that you can experience. in the end you will be happier that you did.

Millionaire Mentor suggests business

Millionaire Mentor suggests business

Out of the self-made millionaires created in the world today 84% are created in the area of business. If that many self-made millionaires are made in this category it definitely merits a closer look.

Here are a few options:

Starting a business

You may have a great idea for a business. Keep in mind not all businesses are winners. A lot of business in fact fail and the vast majority of businesses make under $200,000 a year. That quite a distance from a million. So what are the key factors that make a businesses success more likely? Here’s a few quick questions that I try to create when building a business and ask when buying a business.

Is there an interested audience ready to pay for this product or service?

Are there systems to make this transaction or if not, how easily can one be created?

Is there management in place to keep the system running or improve upon it?

Does this business model have the potential for growth?

Is this business something that interests me?

Depending on how powerful the answers are to those question dictate whether or not I will move forward. You’ll notice that I don’t spend a lot of time wondering if I like the business. It’s actually the last question. While I think it’s important to be involved in something I enjoy it’s more important to remove emotion from the equation. If you aren’t making money you won’t have the privilege of being in business long and it certainly won’t help you to reach your goals of becoming a millionaire.

Quick tip: While there is a sense of satisfaction in starting your own business you can spend a lot of money doing so. It is always easier and generally more productive to buy an existing business with all of the systems and tools in place. It generally allows you to begin with cash flow in place.

Buying businesses

You don’t have to start a business. There are lots of great business to buy. Buying a business is a much easier and safer bet in my opinion as well. Statistics confirm that the majority of new business fail in the first two years. The majority of businesses are not profitable in their first five years. And Then there’s the issues of building your brand, finding customers and systematizing all of the details to be able to serve them. Why wouldn’t you just select a business that already has all these things in place and a proven track record and start there? It makes a lot more sense and is far more profitable and less expensive in the end.

You’d be surprised at the way these deals can be structured as well. And you never know why someone is looking to sell their business.

Recently I inquired about buying an additional business for my portfolio of passive income streams. In my quest for opportunities I found a wellness center that had been operating for nearly two decades. They had a large and loyal clientele and the revenue stream seemed consistent.  After answering yes to all of the above questions I decided to meet with the owner of the company.  The company was owned by an older couple who decided it was time to retire. However, I could sense that while they were interested in the financial benefits of selling the business the husband wasn’t entirely keen on stepping totally out of the picture. So we structured things and instead of me becoming the owner, I became a partner. He continued to work with the management team he put in place part time or as often as he wanted to, and I established another passive income stream for myself without having to put in any time or effort at all. In our agreement I also positioned myself that when my new partners grew weary of the business I would have first right of refusal to buy the rest of the company. I have built many deals where the original owners and I have become partners. Sometimes we have used the existing management and other times we have completely restructured the venture. Remember that everything is negotiable and you don’t always have to buy the entire company.

Quick Tip: There are many brokers and resources that sell businesses. You can find many of them online. I like brokerages for business because most of the time they have done most of your sifting already. they generally won’t list a business unless they believe they can sell it. Which means they have already explores the financials, legal documents and assets to ensure that everything they are representing is true. Naturally you will want to do your due diligence as well, but generally speaking brokerages give you a pretty fair head start. And by the way they generally charge the seller, not you.

Selling a business

While I like to buy business and hold on to them for cash flow or an increase in value I also like to buy and sell businesses. Sometimes you can make a lot of money doing this. Think of it like buying a fixer upper in real estate. You see a business that has potential, but maybe they are not quite running it at maximum performance yet. (Business being sold by people retiring are a great example. Perhaps they have become stale in how they have things systematized or are not even aware of new technology that could automate things for them allowing for more income.) Well, often when I see an opportunity like this I will buy the company, give it a facelift, increase the numbers and then go hunting for a new buyer. Buying and selling businesses are a great strategy for growing wealth.
