As I have taught the principles of Personal Power Mastery over the last decade Have seen some extremely talented people in business, in the performance arts and athletics. Once while in Canada I met a young man who was an incredible hockey player. He was no doubt destined for an incredible career in professional hockey. By the time he was 16 he was already being scouted by several NHL teams. Secretly they had each cursed he and his parents and shared offers and promises if he were to make them his first choice.

You’d think that would have been motivating. But instead it was exactly the opposite. This young man began to think of the money, fame and fortune that was headed his way and at times he began to think beyond the mark to what life would be like when it was time to retire. One of his relatives after all had warned him to put money aside so that he would be prepared when he could no longer play hockey.

His focus began to shift to what he would do after rather than on what he could do now. His practicing began to be more relaxed and he began to sit still reading business books more often. He justified it by thinking he was still so far ahead of his peers and he assumed the promises to him from the dreams were not conditional. Slowly his lead on the other began to diminish and in a short time the phone calls and correspondence from the professional teams began tot disappear.

Unfortunately he didn’t recognize what was happening until it was too late. He lost his focus on hockey and it was no longer an option for him. He eventually took a job in the trades and is now almost forty. He will never play professional hockey and it all came to loosing his focus and looking beyond the mark.

There are great lessons from this situation. The time to do your best is in the present and even when you are ahead there is still a lot of work to do. Obviously this missed opportunity is still one of the biggest regrets and what-ifs in my friends life. Had he pushed hard for the few years between his teenage years and taking the ice as a professional everything would have been different.

As we spoke together and worked through some of these questions it became clear that part of the challenge may have been the pressure and a desire to self sabotage. But we will talk about that another time. Today is about focus which is the first thing he lost.

When we are focused and committed we have more moments of what some experts term as flow. Flow is when we get into our groove and we perform at our very best levels. When we get out of flow we can then see distractions, self sabotage and feel pressure.

When we are in the flow there is no pressure. We are doing what we love and doing it well. When this friend was on the ice playing hockey he was in his flow. When the money, agents, teams and meetings were added to the mix he started to step outside his flow. The reason why is that he couldn’t directly connect those things to the feeling he was getting on the ice. Instead in his mind he separated them. There was the sport and there was the business.

The more he thought about the business the more he became split between the sport and his flow.
My challenge to you today is to recognize where you are splitting your focus and what it is costing you? What could you eliminate or delegate to others so you can be focused on your flow more each day? I call it getting into your brilliance zone.

And with the things that you must do that are not dialled into your flow how can you attach them to your highest values so that they support you rather than distract you. Take some time and think about that today.

Activities without purpose can never produce progress.

One of the big lessons Star Wars got right in Personal Development

Over the last ten years I have had the opportunity to interview, spend time with and learn first hand from more than 400 of the worlds top achievers. These lessons have become the basis of what many are calling the most powerful personal change and development program in the world today. It is called Personal Power Mastery.

I have presented this material on nearly every continent on the planet and to audiences of thousands of people in almost every country you could think of. As I have seen people learn this information the lessons have continued. This time learning about the different personality types on the planet, the different learning styles these people have, the different reason people want to succeed or make changes to their lives and some very interesting ways people make choices and evaluate what they will and won’t do. (Even if the outcome will be good for them.)

I know the title of this article talks about Star Wars so I’d better get to that point. I am still most drawn to the originally trilogy by George Lucas. For me anything beyond that was simply an attempt to recapture (unsuccessfully I might add) what that original trilogy did. The original trilogy introduced such amazing ideas and concepts that connected directly with who we are as people.

One of those links that I would like to talk about today is the Force. Sure, you saw that coming. But as I have studied the worlds top achievers and also those who were trying to improve their own lives I have come to the conclusion that certain elements of the force are real.

Yes, you heard that right. Now I’m not talking about the part about moving spaceships out of swamps or choking people from across the room. (Who knows maybe one day we’ll figure that stuff out.) What I am talking about is the connection that trusting our feelings has directly with the results in our lives.

One of my favourite scenes in the original trilogy is in the first film, now known as A New Hope. (I’m pretty sure everyone in the world has seen this film so I don’t think I need to warn “Spoiler alert.”)

You’ll remember that Luke and the rest of the rebels are engaged in an attack on the Death Star as it looms closer and closer to blow up the rebel base. Several of Lukes collegues attempt to blown up the Death Star by flying down a deep trench on the surface to shoot a few rockets down a ventilator shaft. Certainly a very difficult shot by any space pilots standards.

They each use a special targeting technology made specifically to aid pilots in making difficult shots like this. And even with that technology the pilots who attempt it fail.

Now when its Luke’s turn, and time has run out. Luke has only one chance. He also prepared his special targeting computer and heads down the trench.

Then the voice of his mentor, Ben Kenobi comes into his mind and advises him to trust his feelings. Luke shuts of his computer and shoots his rockets with only his feelings, instincts and power of the force to guide him.
Luke is successful and the good guys win.

Okay, so here’s the connection to personal development, the top achievers, those that attend my seminars and you.

I have seen many people come in and try a very logical approach to constructing their lives. They plan meticulously and itemize a list of things they need to do and sometime even itemize the order in which they need to do them. They lean almost exclusively on a logical approach.

I seen them start great. But soon life comes at them and external circumstances, other desires and new goals or values take them off track. The logic only approach seldom works. It’s like the targeting computer in Star Wars. The pilots who failed relied exclusively on the technology. They didn’t dial into their feelings and they didn’t have the force. They simply went through the motions.

Let’s jump over to the force, feelings and Luke. As I do I want to point out that Luke did have the support of some technology. The x-wing fighter for example. He couldn’t have done it without it. So I’m not saying throw out all logic. What I am saying is that there needs to be a partnership logic and feeling.

In the Personal Power Mastery Seminars I point this out when talking about creating outcomes. If you want to set a goal or create an outcome you need to begin with some very specific descriptions of what you want. This will not only face you in the right direction but it will also let you know once you’ve arrived. But more important than that are the feelings. (in other words the Force) If you have no feeling behind what you want to achieve you will have a hard time staying motivated to get there.

One of the saying we share in the seminar is that “Your Will-power is a result of your Why-power.” Without feelings, an emotionally charged reason why you will never be able to create the activity needed to achieve the outcome.

But trusting our feelings can be frightening. You’ll remember the reaction of Luke’s friends around him when he shut off his targeting computer. They thought something was wrong with him. You may even feel personally that trusting your feelings so much when it comes to creating outcomes may not be wise. But I assure that as I studied top achievers they consistently go further with their feelings than they ever had with logic alone.

In conclusion I want to invite you to find greater feeling in your outcomes. When you connect the logical activities and planning that is required to create these outcomes you find more power in your life to accomplish these most important goals.

Our mindset is a critical factor in creating our successes. Through our mindset we consciously and subconsciously decide what we feel we are capable of, how easily we can progress and even what we are afraid of. If we don’t believe in our minds that we can we never will. In fact, if we our mindset is unsupportive we most likely won’t even try.

Mindset can also be compared to setting a thermostat. With a thermostat the temperature setting is determined and fixed. With mindset we make a resolution and commitment to a specific set of values and we act accordingly.

You’ve heard that if you believe then you can achieve it. This is true. But even more powerful that is that if you are committed you WILL do it. Level up your mindset, get determined and your will see better results begin to flow to you. It’s not enough to simply believe – YOU MUST GET COMMITTED and that starts with mindset.

Often the decisions we make day to day come either from habit (the decisions that we always make without thinking) or our of crisis or necessity (urgent pressing matters that need our attention.) As a result the outcomes that we experiences and the consequences they bring pretty much keep us where we have always been or put us in a state of stress. Very seldom are accidental decisions likely to create powerful outcomes for us.

Douglas Vermeeren PPM 31As decisions are the important transition moment of bring our thoughts into reality it is important that the important ones be made with care. We cannot randomly approach important issues and expect that they will take us to our best results.

Within each of us is a better self. We have caught glimpses of that person from time to time. We know he or she is there and quite frankly eager to get out. When we are our best self we feel great and inspired. We know that this best self has important contributions to make to our wellbeing and the world around us.  However to have that best-self come forward requires effort. Our best self doesn’t automatically appear unless we proactively decide to allow them forward.

Most often we settle to have our average self solve problems quickly because we are Impatient.  We allow our average self to maintain relationships because its quicker. We let our average self rush through our day because they are more or less efficient and its comfortable.

While this may work occasionally it rarely gives us the life we really want and deserve.

You will soon find that getting your best self to make decisions will make your life easier and more rewarding although it requires more effort at first.

The next time you are making an important decision ask yourself am I settling with the choice my average self is making or is my best self choosing the best path?

Warning: Mos tot the time the decisions your best self would make will take more time, more effort and more commitment. But as the old saying goes it’s better to do something right the first time than to have to repeat it.

When we focus on what we can do we are proactive. When we focus on things we can’t do or the things we can’t change we are reactive. A reactive state or individual gives the power of choice away. It places the ability to make a situation better outside themselves. By giving this power away the individual becomes dependant on outside influences to determine their destiny.

When we focus on the things we can change none of our energy is wasted. We begin to take back our power and even the situations which we thought we had no control over will begin to change. As we start working with what we have its almost as though a magical universal power steps in to bring us what we need to get our desire met – even if those things our outside of our influence.

Recently I had an experience that illustrated this. I had a challenge to solve in my business. Much of the challenge was beyond anything I could control. I decided I would do everything in power with everything that I could within my power. A very short time later I received a phone call from someone I hadn’t talked to in months. They had an opportunity to present to me that brought solutions to several of the elements of this challenge beyond my control. It was incredible. I had not reached out to this individual or made them aware of my challenge. The Universe knew and put this person in my path with help.

Start with what you can do and the momentum and commitment of that will bring you the other pieces you need.

In addition often when we begin to confront what the elements we have control over we begin to recognize elements that we may have initially thought were out of our control that actually are in our ability to do something with. Its almost as if we can’t shine a light on these elements until we have started to work with the elements that evident and immediately before us.

In the Movie The Opus, I said “There are no such thin as problems. Everything is a puzzle and there are solutions to puzzles.” If we begin to look at problems and challenges as puzzles they become much more easy to solve.

Results – Are they really on the way for you?

There are five areas of life where people try and achieve results. These areas are: Self (meaning in the areas of how they feel about themselves and their inner most desires), Spirituality and their connection to spirit, Health and elements associated wight heir physical nature, Relationships and interactions with others and lastly Abundance which has to do not just with money but includes aspect of their work, business, free time and more.

How many paths are there to achieve a goal?
In my seminars I ask students to select a goal that they’d like to achieve one of these areas. Once you have your goal selected think carefully before you answer this next question. How many paths are there to this goal? In my seminars people share all kinds of numbers as to how many paths they feel there are to accomplish there goal. But the truth is that there is only one actually path but what makes it seem like there could be many paths comes down to the tools that are used to accomplish each step on the path.

No matter what a persons goals are for the results they want in life there is only one path.

Let me illustrate with this example, the path is like a road yet you can choose what vehicle you will drive on the road.

To share what the path and also what that path effects and eventually includes it is also important to first identify that achieving results is not the first step on the path. In fact, it is not the end destination either.

Thinking leads to Beliefs to Emotion to Goals & Decisions to Actions to Results

The ripples caused by your original thinking do not end here. As your actions begin to create results in the real world they affect the following:

Your results first effect You then Your Family then Your Immediate Network then Your Community or Tribe then (And this has changed a lot since the invention of the internet) now the World and onward to the Universe.

More later on how you actually affect the Universe. This one will surprise you:

Some of the effects of your action are certainly more noticeable than others and some of your actions have more profound effects on those around you than others. But there is a concept called the Butterfly effect which states that all things are effect eventually even by the smallest of actions like a butterfly flapping its wings.

For todays purposes it is important to recognize that this path of getting to results meaning, Thinking to create Beliefs which create Emotions Which cause goals & Decisions which create Actions which produce Results, this is the same for everyone. There wis only one way to create results and this is it. Even if the results you are creating happen as part of a team or delegation the early steps from thought to decision are still included. There is only one way.
Where people get the idea that there are different ways is that there are definitely differences in thoughts , beliefs, emotions, goals and actions that produce those results. If we were to look again at the analogy of road being the path. The differences of how a person moves along that path could be compared to the mode of transportation. Some people are walking and very slowly I might add, others are driving a high powered sports car.

As you grow more successful in your ability to drive this path you graduate to faster and more effective vehicles. As you are more creative in your approach and do things that others won’t, can’t or don’t think of the vehicle you select also improves. As you enlist the help of others in your journey your vehicle also improves and so does the quality of the ride.

Are you Pattern Primed for Success?

It’s time to head back to school. As everyone starts off with a fresh view and clean slate. If you want to add a significant brain tool to how you learn this year then listen up, because we have something powerful for you.  And even if you’re not a student listen up  because the technique we are about to share has been scientifically proven to help in a variety of settings including work, family life and staying focused with important goals.

The principle is called Pattern Priming. And here’s how it works:

Our brains are wired in a very unique way that strives to seek out patterns and seeks out the completion with all stimuli that it encounters.

That’s one of the reasons why we sometimes have the urge to finish peoples sentences, feel the need to finish a TV show even though we may be bored with it, why kids are told to finish their dinner and why the optical illusion on this page tells your brain there is a square between the four circles when it is not there. Our brain fills in the blanks and is constantly on the look out for other patterns to complete or questions to answer.

The principle of pattern priming utilizes this natural tendency of the brain. Pattern Priming is simply this. You prime your brain by creating blanks that your brain will crave to fill.

Pattern priming utilizes our brains specific ability to recognize. Recognition is a powerful system our mind uses to file. Recognition is not only used to categorize new information, but also to retrieve it when using our memory. There are two kinds of memory retrieval; Recognition and basic information recall. Studies have demonstrated that our ability is far more powerful for recognition than it is for basic information recall.

To illustrate participate in this experiment, If I asked you the what was the date of the Apollo 11 lunar landing on the moon are you able to recall the exact date? Now if I asked you to recognize the specific date from the following dates: August 14, 1972; December 3, 1984; July 20, 1969, are you able to pick it out of the options available to you?  Which is easier? If you had been exposed to that historical date prior to this experiment you will have found that recognition of an existing answer is always easier than attempting to reproduce an answer on your own.

This is also one of the reasons we are often much better at remembering the faces than the names of people we meet.

Recognition a powerful system that our brain utilizes to quickly interpret a situation. And recognition is a key factor in being able to pattern prime.

Let me give a personal example from my own life of how pattern priming helped me solve a problem I struggled with. I have always suffered form learning difficulties in school. Most of these challenges have had to do with attention or lack of ability to focus.

While in college I struggled with my first course in general psychology. I loved the information, but I had a hard time following the readings in the text. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed reading the information, I just could not get much of it to stay in my brain.  I couldn’t anchor it because I had no context or application strategy. (We can talk about those points in another post.) Then I learned the idea of priming.

My priming technique was simple. Rather than just read through the text book hoping for results, I started my study session by creating a series of questions that I thought could be on my tests. Often times I would get these from the chapter summaries in the book.  I also began to ask the teacher after class more questions about what he thought was the most important points in this weeks assignment. With more than 25 questions or blanks to fill I began to read the text book.

My mind was now primed not just to read but to search.  When the answered appeared in the readings they were now vivid and almost popped off the page.  My brain was pattern primed to seek for closure by finding the answers.

From that day on I changed the way that I learned. Rather than look for answers I looked for questions. When I created unanswered patterns in my mind I found my brain holding onto the answers more firmly as I found them. Effective learning, I found was not a matter of taking more notes in class, but asking as many relevant questions as I could come up with so that may brain could get to work.

The results for me were quite dramatic. My teachers and I saw an improvement from a D to B+ and then to an A in just a matter of weeks.

While the above example may seem simple, pattern priming works. Whether it is to find an answer to a question in a school course, fill in the blank on a design, stay focused with goals that matter or simply to find closure on an idea, priming is a powerful tool for directing focus and getting the results you are looking for. Put your mind on a mission by priming it to seek out and zero-in on the results that you want in your life right now.
