It is important to always remember that people buy emotionally and they back it up logically. Where most speakers fumble the ball is in understanding how to transition effectively from emotion to logic in the purchasing decision process. Most speakers have a clear distinction between their teaching and their pitch and this is where the sales break down occurs with most audiences.

This concept of transition when executed correctly guides the audience to keep the emotional high that got them interested and keeps their momentum high through all steps needed to complete the purchase.

One of the techniques we use in our Secrets of Selling from the Stage program to facilitate this transition is to use transition phrases which guide the audience into a state of logic without compromising the emotion.

One example of these transitional phrases leading into the logical portion of your offering is to start by sharing a date. For example, You’ve just been teaching and the emotional connection with the audience is high. you sense its time to proceed with your offer. You simply shift by saying “On October 16 & 17 I am going to be coming back to this location to teach more on the principles I’ve just shared.” That’s the transition.

So rather than leading with “I am going to do a workshop.” (That’s pitchy and the audience knows the pitch is coming.) or even worse, “I’d like to share an opportunity.” (The audience braces themselves because here comes the ask.)

Instead by starting with the date the audience begins to shift to logic by asking themselves what they re doing on the dates mentioned. After you’ve subtly got them thinking about the logistics of how they will attend you can begin to ease into your offer.

A weird way of setting goals for transformational leaders and speakers

Goal setting is the hot topic of the day! Most people that I’ve chatted with on the subject generally do it in categories in their life. Some of those categories include what they will do in their personal life and relationships, Business/product growth and revenue growth, things they’d like to learn and accomplish personally. These are all important areas to focus on – but here’s a quick thought. Have you ever made a list of the people you’d like to serve this year and what you’d like to do for them?

I’m talking simply make the list and leave it at that.

Think about it. If you make a list of who you’d like to serve and how you want to empower them, don’t you think most everything else will take care of itself?

If you are truly interested to become a transformational leader and help people get results doesn’t this approach make more sense. Your students and contacts will reward you as they get results. We have a saying at High Profit Speaker, “Compensation follows completion. People don’t pay for good intentions.” So in your planning focus your time and look at who you can help, how you can help and make it less about what you want.

People buy products or in other words people buy the results of those products. No one buys process but I see speakers again and again try to sell the process. In fact, just today I was sitting with one of my new one on one masterclass students. I asked her to tell me what she sells. And you guessed it, she didn’t talk about eh result she talked about the process she takes the student too. NOBODY BUYS PROCESS.

Let’s think about it this way. If you went to McDonalds for a bite to eat – Are people excited about the process? You pull up behind the last car in the drive through line. He moves up, you move up. He moves up, you move up. Finally you are at the ordering speaker. You share your ideas and correct the misinterpretations heard by the person working on the other side. Finally when its right you pull up again. You arrive at the first window and you pull out your ATM card…. etc, etc, etc. Pretty exciting right? Not.

Too many speakers try and sell the process when nobody really cares. In fact, by focusing on the results and holding back the process your conversations will be much higher in the long run. There will be a curiosity around the mysterious processes that you will use to solve their problem. If you give it all up front it’s like a magician teaching how the illusion is performed before they perform it. Focus on product (Which are the results) not process!

Key: I have seen some speakers try to demonstrate the results they can get by taking a participant and making them a live experiment in the intro session. I advise against this. Again it reveals to much about what they would experience if they paid you. You run the risk of them saying they could figure it out on their own. In the intro session focus on results and concepts.
