Results – Are they really on the way for you?

There are five areas of life where people try and achieve results. These areas are: Self (meaning in the areas of how they feel about themselves and their inner most desires), Spirituality and their connection to spirit, Health and elements associated wight heir physical nature, Relationships and interactions with others and lastly Abundance which has to do not just with money but includes aspect of their work, business, free time and more.

How many paths are there to achieve a goal?
In my seminars I ask students to select a goal that they’d like to achieve one of these areas. Once you have your goal selected think carefully before you answer this next question. How many paths are there to this goal? In my seminars people share all kinds of numbers as to how many paths they feel there are to accomplish there goal. But the truth is that there is only one actually path but what makes it seem like there could be many paths comes down to the tools that are used to accomplish each step on the path.

No matter what a persons goals are for the results they want in life there is only one path.

Let me illustrate with this example, the path is like a road yet you can choose what vehicle you will drive on the road.

To share what the path and also what that path effects and eventually includes it is also important to first identify that achieving results is not the first step on the path. In fact, it is not the end destination either.

Thinking leads to Beliefs to Emotion to Goals & Decisions to Actions to Results

The ripples caused by your original thinking do not end here. As your actions begin to create results in the real world they affect the following:

Your results first effect You then Your Family then Your Immediate Network then Your Community or Tribe then (And this has changed a lot since the invention of the internet) now the World and onward to the Universe.

More later on how you actually affect the Universe. This one will surprise you:

Some of the effects of your action are certainly more noticeable than others and some of your actions have more profound effects on those around you than others. But there is a concept called the Butterfly effect which states that all things are effect eventually even by the smallest of actions like a butterfly flapping its wings.

For todays purposes it is important to recognize that this path of getting to results meaning, Thinking to create Beliefs which create Emotions Which cause goals & Decisions which create Actions which produce Results, this is the same for everyone. There wis only one way to create results and this is it. Even if the results you are creating happen as part of a team or delegation the early steps from thought to decision are still included. There is only one way.
Where people get the idea that there are different ways is that there are definitely differences in thoughts , beliefs, emotions, goals and actions that produce those results. If we were to look again at the analogy of road being the path. The differences of how a person moves along that path could be compared to the mode of transportation. Some people are walking and very slowly I might add, others are driving a high powered sports car.

As you grow more successful in your ability to drive this path you graduate to faster and more effective vehicles. As you are more creative in your approach and do things that others won’t, can’t or don’t think of the vehicle you select also improves. As you enlist the help of others in your journey your vehicle also improves and so does the quality of the ride.

A lot of people have been writing in to me about my recent posts around the BAM movement. (Be Awesome Movement) The comments have been encouraging and exciting. I have received several comments asking specifically why I don’t share more of these ideas in my seminars. The truth is that I used to. In fact, these are the kinds of things that I taught when I first started in personal development and I loved it. I felt these lessons really made a difference in the lives of those I was teaching and it made me feel good to help so many people on a personal level.

I kind of gravitated away from this over time because most event organizers wanted me to teach about some of the successes I was having in business and financially. I like teaching those things too and I probably still will from time to time.

Are people categorizing you without your permission?

And are you important enough?

Our brain and mind work in mysterious ways. These ways can have a significant impact on our relationships with others and can be very influential factors on the success of our business or the lack of it.

One of the functions that we experience regularly can be readily observed. It is called split second categorizing.  Let me first explain what it is and then share some examples. After the examples I will include some exercises on how you can prepare for this brain science phenomenon and use it to find your ideal customers and improve your business.

What is split second categorizing?

One of the significant ways our brain is wired is to be on the alert and ready to respond immediately. One of the ways it does this can be found in the way it sorts information. Generally speaking our mind does not take the time to sort information it receives so it tries to find a short hand way to categorize things.  For example if I say to you think of the color blue. Your mind doesn’t go through a million shades of blue to consider options. It simply selects a generic blue and that is what you see. In other words, your mind tries to satisfy requests for information as quickly as possible. This sit he same process that creates stereotypes in our mind.  Here is another word list that your mind will immediately find a common generic answer or stereotype for. As you read these take a second to notice the picture your mind creates:

Sales man

Dentist

Lawyer

Doctor

School Teacher

Scientist

Mayor

Garbage man

Postal worker

Business man

Entrepreneur

Financial Planner

Real Estate agent

Did you notice your mind finding generic or stereotypical responses to these words? Did you notice that your mind also filled in the blanks on settings or context surrounding these words. For example, did you school teacher stand at a chalk board? Did your doctor have a stethoscope? Was your scientist in a lab coat? Did your salesman have a brief case and was he knocking on your door? Most likely you saw some of the same images. These examples of visual shorthand are common in western society. Are the images you saw perfect, complete or in some cases even accurate to some of the people you may know who have these occupations? Chances are you immediately recognize many exceptions to categorizing your mind did. In fact, most of the categorizing we initial do overlooks the people we know that are actually in these professions. Was your first reaction someone that you know in these roles? Probably not. Recognition and association takes too long in the mind. Your brain is wired for speed. Any answer first – correct or specific answer second.

It’s this split second categorizing that has kept us safe. Our brain first separates all things into safe or unsafe. (Or friendly/unfriendly). Then next your brain will sort things into answering whether an object or thing can serve you or it can’t. (Survival mode again.) If it decides that it is something can serve you your brain will further categorize it as to risks involved through association. The brain at this point begins to analyze more critically. it is still categorizing but it is investing more time investigating. (ie. Will it cost too much? Can it really do what I think it can? Is there a risk to explore further?)

This is how our mind works even in business relationships. Here’s the example that I promised. Return in your mind to a recent networking event you may have attended. Preferably a breakfast or lunch meeting where everyone was gathered around a table with the opportunity to introduce themselves. Remember how you felt as different people introduced themselves and their business opportunities. Some of these people were very interesting to you, but you heard enough, you didn’t need to know more. Some of these people were not interesting to you at all.  And lastly, perhaps a few were extremely interesting to you and you knew you needed to connect with them.  What was the difference? This is split second categorizing at work.

You immediately categorized these people into those that could serve your interests and those that could not. Is it true that those same people may have actually had something valuable that could have helped your business. perhaps. But the way they presented themselves and their opportunities caused your brain to categorize them as unimportant to you. And because of that presentation you will most likely never follow up with them or do business with them.

So how can you keep from being categorized as unimportant? How can you be categorized as relevant to others? This important question will have a significant impact on the number of leads you generate. And because of that it will have an immediate effect on your company’s bottom line.

You need to find a way to be categorized as important.  And here are a few suggestions that will help you do that:

  1. Understand who your customers are

Only by understanding who your customers really are and what they really want can you create offers that they categorize as relevant to them. By categorizing and profiling your clients first you can begin to recognize how they are going to categorize you. You can profile them based on their sex, age, occupation, income, social status and even education. In this day and age we are encouraged to be politically correct yet the truth is our brain still categorizes people according to race, gender, religious affiliations and so forth. Be sure that you also take these things into consideration.

  1. Recognize their needs and apprehensions

The more you understand and categorize your customers the more you will be able to anticipate what their true needs are and their true apprehensions. I use the word ‘true’ intentionally because in my experience most business owners I have met have never invested the time and effort to truly know how their customers categorize. These business owners assume that since they are in serving a specific industry that they get what their customers want and they know how to communicate it to them. Nothing could be further from the truth. The ways customers categorize changes regularly and the way they need to be marketed to also changes regularly. Buzz words change meaning over time. Opportunities that were once hot become stale. And a negative experience with one brand can paint the entire industry. To be success you must include as part of your strategy a constant mission to stay relevant and important to your clients.

  1. Craft your presentation 

Even if you understand how your customers categorize you will need to invest a substantial amount of time crafting your presentation. A big part of your emphasis should be on the beginning of your presentation. It is said that first impressions are based on the first three seconds of an interaction. This is split second categorizing at work.  I find one of the strongest ways to begin is to use something called ‘pattern priming.’ (We talk more about pattern priming within the coaching program. It is a powerful tool for persuasion and increasing sales.) In a very simply application pattern priming at the beginning of your presentation could include questions that your prospect needs to have answered. Great examples are the questions/statements/headlines that appear on the cover of magazines and newspapers. For example: 5 easy ways to tell if your boyfriend is cheating on you, The number one reason you can’t lose weight, 3 mistakes that business owners make that keep them broke, How I survived an abusive marriage, How to make a million dollars without trying.

Split second categorizing is something that you will never be able to escape. If you learn how to use it to your benefit it can be a great asset for finding your customers and becoming important to them. We only invest in the things that we value. And the first way to increase your bottom line is become relevant to those who can purchase your products and services.

The new Website for the TV show Powerful Thinking Powerful Results is now live. The Television show Powerful Thinking Powerful Results is focused on exploring insights into the psychology of success and how to harness the power of thought to create better outcomes in the real world.

The show is hosted by Douglas Vermeeren, a top personal development teacher often thought of as the modern day Napoleon Hill (Think and Grow rich) for  his research into the lives of more than 400 of the world’s top achievers. It is estimated that each day we have more than 70,000 unique thoughts. So what is it that controls our thoughts? How does our mind select which thoughts to develop and which thoughts to ignore? How do the prominent thoughts become things?

In order for thoughts to develop into reality they must be permitted to develop in the mind.

As they develop they grow and are built upon. If the spark of thought continues to grow action can result. Action will then bring that thought into reality.

Many of the thoughts that develop in the mind do not become a reality. We have all had thoughts that began as a brilliant burst of inspiration. Perhaps these ideas even got you excited for a few minutes, maybe an hour, a day or even a week… Then they faded away.  Even though they started as powerful ideas they did not end up as a tangible reality in your life?

How could an idea so bright and exciting turn dim or disappear altogether.

 

Even more frustrating are the ideas that do not disappear. They anchor themselves in the back or your mind, they cling to you waiting for the day that you may act upon them. These are probably the most painful ideas. You know in your heart that if you did something with these kinds of ideas they would really make a difference in your life.

 

What is it that holds us back? What is it that keeps us from creating the reality we are thinking about?

One of the most significant factors that determines our reality are our expectations.

What we believe could happen is the line that all thoughts must pass in order to become action. Taking action on a thought is the way it is translated into reality.

Expectations can include what we believe a specific outcome will be, but also what we believe we are entitled to and how we believe we should act in certain situations.

 

As expectations can often be based on past experience or pre-determined values often our expectations will cause our thinking to follow a similar course to what we have done in the past.

 

Expectations of outcome often guide our thoughts and our behavior to conform our new experience with a past situation. Here is an example of where we have experienced this:

 

  • We also see expectations at work in the movies. If I said Tom Hanks is in a movie what kind of movie do you think you’d be going to watch? What if I said Ben stiller? Would you envision a different kind of film? And when you went to see it how would you feel if it didn’t jive with your expectations? You’d be disappointed. In fact, Hollywood has seen a lot of movies over the years that didn’t make it simply because they changed the formula, or constructed a story with an actor contrary to your expectations.

 

Entitlement is also an overlooked element of expectations.  What you feel you are entitled to will dictate your thinking on certain matters.

 

There was a study conducted some years ago to determine the role that sacrifice or activity had on entitlement. The experiment involved two groups. One group was given a variety of tasks to complete and then after completing the work, was ushered into an empty room with a table and chair. On the table was an envelope with $50 bill and the words thank you written on the envelope.

 

The second group was simply ushered into the room. They had no work to do. The same envelope rested on the table.

 

The majority of people in the first group that had done the work felt that the envelope was left there for them and it was payment for their efforts. Most in the second group felt the envelope was meant for someone else and it was probably left there by mistake.

 

Work, sacrifice and effort give the mind a sense of entitlement.

 

Entitlement is a mysterious thing. I often encounter people who feel that they have not yet paid the price to have what they want, to be who the really feel they should be, or have the relationships they deserve because they have not sacrificed what is required. This is a victim mentality and it keeps many from acquiring the reality they truly desire.

 

The next expectations are expectations about how we believe we should act.

 

I have seen examples of this at numerous seminars and motivational events. This lesson is often used by the speaker to teach people to think differently and to consider that there are often more direct routes than those we initially consider to solve a problem.

 

This is how the scenario plays out, the speaker typically takes a prize (I’ve even seen it done with $100 bill) and simply holds it up and asks “Who would like to have this prize?” Naturally a number of hands raise within the group. He asks again, “Who wants this prize?” Still more hands are raised in the group and often people begin to get a little excited. At this point the speaker asks again with more intensity in his voice, “Who wants the prize?” By this time the audience usually gets it and an audience member actually leaves their set and comes to claim the prize. Again this is a great example of social expectation.

 

Why won’t we leave the seat instantly to claim the prize? We don’t leave our seat to get the prize because we question ourselves. Is it the right thing to do? What will others think of me? Is it proper?  We ask ourselves similar questions on a daily basis that and as a result we prevent ourselves from acting on the thoughts that will empower us most.

 

In a study of the most successful businesses and inventions of all time, you will find that the majority of these successes are innovations on existing ideas. I always get a smile when I hear that Thomas Edison is considered the greatest inventor of all time. It isn’t true. Every major invention that he produced from the light bulb, to the phonograph to the motion picture camera is an innovation on a earlier effort by someone else. You can be an innovator too.

 

You don’t have to think according to a set of imaginary rules.

 

Expectations are a great source of power as much as they can be a great obstacle to your success.

 

If we expect to fail we will not think in empowering ways. We do not dedicate action energy to created failing expectations a reality. That doesn’t mean we don’t dedicate thought to create negative expectations. we do that quite often. If we believe that expectation to be the coming reality, we will create it positive or negative.

 

If we want to create the life we really want we have got to expect it can happen. When we expect to succeed, our thoughts become like a magnet directing all our energies to supporting the expectation.

 

Just a few more thoughts on why expectation is important

The subconscious mind seeks to find solutions to challenges quickly and so it seeks for the most direct route to solutions in the thinking processes. The mind doesn’t really care if the solution is positive or negative. It just wants an answer. When we are on “automatic” pilot, so to speak, our expectations guide thinking almost entirely.

 

Because our mind is always looking for immediate solutions we think and act from a reactive position.   Essentially what our mind is doing is trying to protect us. It is constantly analyzing scenarios and situations to prevents us from experiencing harm or other things we may need to defend against.

 

So how can we build positive expectations?

Positive and empowering expectations must be build on purpose and ahead of time. They cannot be reactionary.

 

Why must they be planned ahead of time and how can that help? In order to explain why it is important to plan ahead of time what you to expect let me address an important characteristic of how our mind remembers.

 

Try to remember two things, notice which of the two things is easier.

 

1)What was the date that United States entered world War 2?

2)What did your first love look like?

 

If you are like most people you found the first question to be much harder than the second. Why is that? The first question dealt with the recall part of your memory. It was a cold hard fact your mind went searching for.

 

The second dealt with recognition. You probably also spent a lot more time thinking about the second question and you might even still be thinking about it now. emotion is attached more to recognition than recall. for those of you who are familiar with the 5 ways the brain learns this would be experiential learning versus factual learning.

 

This is the point: It is a lot easier for your brain to recognize something than it is to recall it.

 

Back to how this effects expectations.

 

If you build your positive expectations clearly, carefully, and emotionally you will have greater power to recognize these expectations and when you are thinking in harmony with them. Your mind will begin to bring your thinking into a supportive position to these expectations and look for evidence to support your new expectations.

 

Your mind also recognizes what is not in harmony with your expectations and discards those thoughts.

 

Expectation can be used in a positive way. Once we begin to expect things to occur in a way which is empowering to us our thoughts begin to direct our actions to follow that course.

 

What we expect, our thinking will support.

 

Expect good things and your thoughts will follow! If your thoughts follow you will begin to see the fruits of these expectations become a reality in your life.
