Authenticity – what does that really mean? Personal Power Mastery minute – Douglas Vermeeren

Douglas Vermeeren - Personal Power Mastery Quote 118

Authenticity isn’t about getting to do what you want. It’s about discovering your highest values and living within the boundaries of those values. Too often the declaration “I’ve got to be me.” leads to short sighted choices based on immediate gratification. This will never provide lasting happiness or produce the best consequences. Take time to discover your values and create consequences that will support them.

One of the big lessons Star Wars got right in Personal Development
Personal Power Mastery moment by Douglas Vermeeren

X-Wing-Fighter_47c7c342

Over the last ten years I have had the opportunity to interview, spend time with and learn first hand from more than 400 of the worlds top achievers. These lessons have become the basis of what many are calling the most powerful personal change and development program in the world today. It is called Personal Power Mastery.

I have presented this material on nearly every continent on the planet and to audiences of thousands of people in almost every country you could think of. As I have seen people learn this information the lessons have continued. This time learning about the different personality types on the planet, the different learning styles these people have, the different reason people want to succeed or make changes to their lives and some very interesting ways people make choices and evaluate what they will and won’t do. (Even if the outcome will be good for them.)

I know the title of this article talks about Star Wars so I’d better get to that point. I am still most drawn to the originally trilogy by George Lucas. For me anything beyond that was simply an attempt to recapture (unsuccessfully I might add) what that original trilogy did. The original trilogy introduced such amazing ideas and concepts that connected directly with who we are as people.

Douglas Vermeeren - Personal Power Mastery Success quote 121

One of those links that I would like to talk about today is the Force. Sure, you saw that coming. But as I have studied the worlds top achievers and also those who were trying to improve their own lives I have come to the conclusion that certain elements of the force are real.

Yes, you heard that right. Now I’m not talking about the part about moving spaceships out of swamps or choking people from across the room. (Who knows maybe one day we’ll figure that stuff out.) What I am talking about is the connection that trusting our feelings has directly with the results in our lives.

One of my favourite scenes in the original trilogy is in the first film, now known as A New Hope. (I’m pretty sure everyone in the world has seen this film so I don’t think I need to warn “Spoiler alert.”)

You’ll remember that Luke and the rest of the rebels are engaged in an attack on the Death Star as it looms closer and closer to blow up the rebel base. Several of Lukes collegues attempt to blown up the Death Star by flying down a deep trench on the surface to shoot a few rockets down a ventilator shaft. Certainly a very difficult shot by any space pilots standards.

They each use a special targeting technology made specifically to aid pilots in making difficult shots like this. And even with that technology the pilots who attempt it fail.

Now when its Luke’s turn, and time has run out. Luke has only one chance. He also prepared his special targeting computer and heads down the trench.

starwars-luke-xwingcockpit-2

Then the voice of his mentor, Ben Kenobi comes into his mind and advises him to trust his feelings. Luke shuts of his computer and shoots his rockets with only his feelings, instincts and power of the force to guide him.
Luke is successful and the good guys win.

Okay, so here’s the connection to personal development, the top achievers, those that attend my seminars and you.

I have seen many people come in and try a very logical approach to constructing their lives. They plan meticulously and itemize a list of things they need to do and sometime even itemize the order in which they need to do them. They lean almost exclusively on a logical approach.

I seen them start great. But soon life comes at them and external circumstances, other desires and new goals or values take them off track. The logic only approach seldom works. It’s like the targeting computer in Star Wars. The pilots who failed relied exclusively on the technology. They didn’t dial into their feelings and they didn’t have the force. They simply went through the motions.

Let’s jump over to the force, feelings and Luke. As I do I want to point out that Luke did have the support of some technology. The x-wing fighter for example. He couldn’t have done it without it. So I’m not saying throw out all logic. What I am saying is that there needs to be a partnership logic and feeling.

In the Personal Power Mastery Seminars I point this out when talking about creating outcomes. If you want to set a goal or create an outcome you need to begin with some very specific descriptions of what you want. This will not only face you in the right direction but it will also let you know once you’ve arrived. But more important than that are the feelings. (in other words the Force) If you have no feeling behind what you want to achieve you will have a hard time staying motivated to get there.

One of the saying we share in the seminar is that “Your Will-power is a result of your Why-power.” Without feelings, an emotionally charged reason why you will never be able to create the activity needed to achieve the outcome.

But trusting our feelings can be frightening. You’ll remember the reaction of Luke’s friends around him when he shut off his targeting computer. They thought something was wrong with him. You may even feel personally that trusting your feelings so much when it comes to creating outcomes may not be wise. But I assure that as I studied top achievers they consistently go further with their feelings than they ever had with logic alone.

In conclusion I want to invite you to find greater feeling in your outcomes. When you connect the logical activities and planning that is required to create these outcomes you find more power in your life to accomplish these most important goals.

More on this topic another time…

Learn from the best in the best way – Personal Power Mastery by Douglas Vermeeren

douglas Vermeeren Personal Power Mastery Success quote 113

Imagine if there was a million dollars in a brief case for you on the other side of a field. The money is all yours all you have to do is go and pick it up. There is however one catch the field is filled with landmines and you don’t know where they are. Crossing this field will be a very challenging not to mention potentially explosive obstacle.

However you have a few options to get across.

Option 1 – Run like heck an hope you make it okay.
Option 2 – Read a book about it and take it slowly and cautiously on your own.
Option 3 – Have someone who has navigated the field once before tell you what to do from the sidelines.
Option 4 – Have someone who has successfully navigated the field multiple times walk with you and point out the potential dangers and challenges.

Which one would you pick?

When it’ appears in the context its pretty obvious which choice is the one you should select to complete the objective of crossing the field. But when it comes to practice in real life you’d be surprised how many choose the first option of simply “winging it” and making a run for it.

Let me share a little about each of these and then make a case why the final one is the best option in real life too.

Option 1 – Run like heck and hope you make it. This is the way most people approach getting to their goals in real life. Whether its in their career pursuits, building a business, flipping a house, becoming a professional athlete or even a rock star. When it comes to achieving their goals most people try to do it solo without support. They rush in whatever direction with whatever activities they think will help them make progress. This is also known as the school of hard knocks. This can be painful, expensive and time consuming. The are the people that think reading, seminars, coaches, mentors and that kind of thing is a waste of time. They often will say things like, “You’ve got to pay your dues.” and “There’s no substitute for hard work.” Most of the time they never achieve anything great and often never get close to their goals.

Option 2 – Read a book about it and take it slowly and cautiously on your own. – I hope I can share this one in a way that makes sense. I am an avid reader and a strong defender of reading and books. But if we are honest there are some limitations. Many people feel that simply reading a book on a subject makes you an expert. I see this ALL the time with other speakers in my career. they read a book about someone else success and suddenly feel they are qualified to teach others about success. (What a disservice to those they claim to serve. They can’t help others because they aren’t even willing to recognize their own limitations.) While reading a book will give you power there are still limitations. One of the challenges with this option in real life (and this happens with just attending seminars too) is that you learn just enough to make you dangerous so to speak. In other words you will get the information to make you started but what happens if you run up against a situation the book doesn’t cover or the seminar didn’t teach you about? What will you do? You will be stuck until you can get help.

The second part of this is taking it slow and cautiously. And we see this reflected in many people in real life. They slow their progress down to make certain that they have all of the answers they need before they take action. Hopefully that’s not you. But if it is let’s clarify one thing even with the top mentors speaking to you hourly you will still not have all the answers. It is just not possible. You will have to walk by faith if you are going to claim the prize.

No in finishing this option I want to emphatically state that I AM NOT AGAINST READING. I am against reading by itself. To be most effective it needs to be a component of a stronger strategy which we will talk about in a moment.

Option 3 – Have someone who has navigated the field once before tell you what to do from the sidelines. This option is getting better because you have the ability to rely on the experience of someone else who has completed the task. But as this article is entitled, “Learn from the best in the best way” I have to point out that while this is the best option so far there are still limitations. Someone observing you from the sidelines is often not aware of the specific details you are facing and they aren’t always seeing things as you see them in the field. They may not always give you the best advice because they don’t always know you and your particular situation in close up detail. It kind of reminds me of the encouragement that we often hear repeated, “Take a millionaire to lunch.” We’ll on the surface that’s a great idea, but in reality its going to take more than a lunch to get yourself truly on track to make your own million.

Option 4 – Have someone who has successfully navigated the field multiple times walk with you and point out the potential dangers and challenges. This final option is the best. Essentially it is having someone who has successfully accomplished what you are intending to do work with you directly to help you successfully arrive at the same conclusion. Often times this can cost more money than the other options up front but in the end it is actually the least expensive and most productive. In many cases as I have observed attendees to our seminars over the years this is also the option that actually gets the most results. Too often people come through our doors that have been trying the other options for years – but suddenly when they get the courage to actually get someone personally involved in helping them everything finally comes together.

Naturally Using a combination of all of these things will provide value as well so don’t neglect any learning opportunity that will support you on your mission.

There is one last things that I want to share that is important to recognize when it comes to learning and perhaps this is the concept that is closest to the title of this article. “Learn from the best in the best way.” Not all mentors, teachers, coaches, books, seminars youtube videos and learning tools are created equal. The lessons from some “Gurus” Will actually take you backwards and cost you time and money instead of helping you fulfill your purposes. Yes, you can learn from everyone and sometimes those lessons can be the wrong way to do something.

Life is short and your time is limited. Seek out the very best people to learn from and make the commitment to appreciate yourself enough to select the support that will ultimately serve you best.

Challenge: Get out there today and seek out in person mentors and support to help you get to your goals.

Can’t vs Won’t – Douglas Vermeeren

leave a comment »

I have often heard people say that they just can’t be successful. They then share a list of reasons why it’s just too tough to be successful beginning with everything from their upbringing to education to resources to a lack of opportunities.

Douglas Vermeeren ppm 55Upon closer examination the ideas they share are all excuses. They actually are no different than a lot of the obstacles other people who have achieved success before them have faced and overcome.

The real reason why these people ‘can’t’ get to the success they want is the word ‘won’t.’ They won’t do it and it’s not a matter of circumstances it’s a matter of laziness.

It’s much easier for some people to share excuses than it is to take action. When you take action not only is there the prospect of hard work, there is also the possibility that things may not work out as you had hoped for. That could me embarrassment, loss and even some pain. (I do want to point out that pain is last on the list. It is very rare that a failure actually brings high levels of pain with it. And we will talk about that in a future post. Most of the time there is ZERO physical pain, but a degree of mental discomfort as you realize that you fell short of your goal.) One of the things that most people don’t realize is that when they fall short they miss seeing the progress that they actually did make.

street-sign

So the next time you are on the fence about whether you are going to move forward towards your goals ask what’s keeping you from getting started. Is it really that you ‘can’t’ or is it that you ‘won’t?’

Simplicity Proceeds Success – BAM #14

Keep-it-simple

Simplicity linked to success
By Douglas Vermeeren

At first glance it may seem like the most successful, wealthy and influential business leaders in the world have a lot going on. It’s true that they have hectic and busy schedules. Their days are full and very productive and they don’t waste time. While those things are true one thing is certain and that is that their activities are precise and focused. To create high level success creating simplicity and effectiveness is fundamental. Here are three suggestions from my research of top achievers as to how you can create more simplicity and effectiveness in your activities.

Determine your specific mission
Recently I was at a networking event for entrepreneurs. One individual handed me his business card. On it were listed several unrelated businesses opportunities this individual was engaged in. I could immediately tell that he wasn’t extremely successful in any of them. The old saying, “Jack of all trades, master of none” was apparent. Don’t-Forget-to-Give-People-Your-Business-Card1One of the most important things that I learned in building my own business with the support of incredible mentors was just because you can do a skill doesn’t mean you should. We only have so much time, ability and energy and of we try to do everything we cannot possibly do them all well. I use the analogy in my seminars of having a single glass of water and a remove full of plants. If you try to water everything it will all die. If you select a small group of plants to nurture they will thrive. Most entrepreneurs try to do too many things and therefore nothing really thrives. Pick a specific mission and dedicate yourself there.

Go deep enough to know your business and focus on solving specific problems
By going deep into an area of expertise in your business and career you develop yourself as an expert. When you spend more time in that specific area you develop thinking and tools that allow you to solve problems in that area better than anyone else. This is same strategy that turns regular doctors into brain surgeons, average athletes into olympians and scientists into astronauts. If you want to become an expert in your business or career expertise will be required.

Your value to others will be in proportion to the problems you are able to solve. If you want to be paid more solve more complex problems. The way more complex problems are solved is to simply spend more time solving problems in that area. Your experience and knowledge in the area will give you what is needed to solve problems in a specific area. It’s that simple.

sam-waltonOne of the impressive things to me as I interviewed the 400 top achievers was to observe how how they were to learn about a specific area directly related to their business. They read, researched and talked with everyone they possible could. Sam Walton founder of Walmart would visit the retail stores of his competition and talk with them about how they were doing things every opportunity he had. He even used to do it on family holidays and in far away countries. It was his thirst to understand the world of retailing that lead him to introduce many of the ideas we take for granted in a Walmart today. It was this same thirst that made him the richest man in America for a time.

Eliminate needless activities and time wasters
You’ve heard it said that time is the most important commodity in the world. It is true yet still most people only pay this concept lip service. Most people take longer with activities than is required to solve them. For example, most people feel that a meeting with someone ought to take an hour. I suspect that this is a remnant of the idea that a class in school was an hour so therefore every other meeting should be an hour too. I’ll never forget on of the top achievers who became a mentor to me divided his day into 15 minute increments. If you wanted a meeting with him it was generally allowed 15 minutes. To stay on track we actually put a timer on the table as you talked with him to keep you both on track. With such time limits imposed you didn’t find yourself talking needlessly about the weather, the local sports team or any other kind of fluffy feel good banter. It was straight to the important matters.

Digital-Timer-Countdown-Timer-TL8016-

Now I’m not saying that we need to eliminate all friendly discussion but average people spend too much time making meaningless conversation and time passes quickly. I recently had a student at one of my events who had a continual problem with meetings running into each other. He was always late and continually falling behind. In addition his meetings with clients were not converting for him. As we talked about the structure of an effective client meeting we found that he was spending way too much time on discussions that did not serve the client. While some of this chit chat may have been polite it did not contribute to his mission.

Simplicity requires setting up boundaries and that means you’ve got to spend some time in preparation to determine what is most valuable to you. When you know what is most important you can start spending your valuable time there.

Leonardo-da-Vinci1

In conclusion Leonardo Di Vinci was credited for having said that “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Getting to simple takes work, the above suggestions are not easy and they are also just the beginning. As you learn to simplify and get focused your results will improve and success will become possible for you.
