Is public speaking as a business dead?

by Douglas Vermeeren 10X Your Speaking Business

For the last two decades I have been a public speaker. I have seen a lot of changes and most prominently I have seen many new speakers arrive on the scene with the intention to create a massive business sharing their expertise.
More often than not they fail.

This makes me ask: Is public speaking as a business dead or dying?

As I have carefully considered this question and looked at the complete landscape of what is really going on in this highly saturated industry of speaking, coaching, mentoring and personal development in general I have an answer to this question:

The old way of building this business is dying.

While those who understand the nuances of today’s marketplace are not only thriving but building incredible 7 & 8 figure businesses.

If I were summarize a few of the differences between the dying and thriving it would be as simple as this:

The dying are relying on an old model of the speaking business. In other words they are focusing on creating signature speeches, speaking for a fee and doing as many speeches as they possibly can. The thriving understand that building a brand is important and real authentic connection with the audience trumps signature speeches every time.

The dying are always on the hunt for the next event to get in front of an audience.
The thriving understand the platforms available to them to create audiences around them and their content. They understand that once they find their vibe they earn their tribe.

The dying take out ads and do posts on social media focused on telling about themselves and their many accomplishments, constantly inviting you to events or buy products and promoting their latest greatest whatever it is.The thriving understand that today’s market place is value content and relationship driven. The more you give away the more likely you are to attract people who want to learn more.

The dying also don’t understand the important of building relationships with the power players in the business and that reputation helps create brand. The thriving understand that relationships with high level experts is available to them and they understand how to create synergy with people that matter. The dying don’t have a game plan and they often fly by the seat of their pants, taking whatever speaking gigs come their way.

The thriving understand that a business strategy is essential to success in the speaking business and saying no to events that don’t serve your bran is one of the best things you can do.
Anyways, there are a few thoughts for now.

The Speaking Business Multiplier – 3 Tips to think about developing content – Douglas Vermeeren

While you’d think that content and acquiring content would at the top of the priority list for people wanting to be considered experts in the field of speaking, coaching and training – it isn’t always. Over the last several decades I have been involved in the personal development business I’ve seen many who just don’t feel that constant preparation, improvement or education is that important. I regularly see speakers who prepare a speech only after they have an event booked and I’ve also seen others who prepared one speech a long time ago and every time (even to the same audience) bring out that same speech. This is a short cut. And although it may be the easy way it will never open up the doors for you to be considered an expert or a person with solutions of any depth.

I suppose it’s very similar to the one hit wonders of the music business. Or better yet like a  pianist with only one key to play. LAME.

Here are 3 thoughts to think about when preparing your content that will help you to position yourself as an expert, be prepared for any event you are called upon without notice (And this happens often for higher level speakers) and lastly, to become profitable as a speaker.

  1. Read, research, watch, listen and learn every single day. I would even suggest multiple times a day. The flow of ideas into your mins on the subject you speak about needs to be constant. Almost to the point of overflow. As it overflows in your mind it will fill the minds of those you present to. In their minds you will be the well from which they know they can gain the answer. The only way that you can become that is if you first fill your mind. An old hindu saying says it best: An empty vessel can fill no other cup. Obviously it goes without saying that from the beginning I hope you have chosen a subject that you are excited about. If you are truly excited about this subject matter you’ll find that this quest for content isn’t a burden but an exciting opportunity. And I should mention if you aren’t cited about your subject it will be very difficult to get others excited about it. 452830868_0f1406ba87_b
  2. Record and sort it as though you were to teach it. When we learn with purpose we retain and record things in a more powerful way than if we to simply read something. I invite all of my students to record the content they are researching as though they had to teach it. As they look at how their research can help and bless the lives of their students they have all found amazing results. One of the most powerful being is that have immediately started to recognize what has been most valuable and practical in their research. They have been able to recognize where in their presentations these new findings have been able to fit. They have also noticed that their level of expertise has risen among their audiences. It really does become clear which speakers are consistently learning and which are just coasting. Naturally as you learn to teach your students will also feel who really cares.online_keyboard_news
  3. Look for ways to share what you are learning outside of your presentation. More and more I am seeing a massive shift in the personal development and speaking industry. No longer are people able to maintain a career simply as “a keynoter.” In order to thrive in this business it is necessary to expand to other platforms and areas such as coaching, mentoring, masterminds, products and an array of other platforms. One of the other necessities is a social media presence. Daily communication to your tribe or community is becoming more and more of an expectation. And the more your visibility and stature in the industry rise the more it is expected of you. Your daily content quests are a great way to find and prepare information to share. It needn’t be long but it definitely needs to be consistent.

The 2 Reasons Why You Quit! – Douglas Vermeeren

The two reasons why people fail
By Douglas Vermeeren, Creator of Personal Power Mastery

Why do people fail to accomplish the goals and dreams that they select for themselves. It ’s not because these dreams or goals are not important. It’s not that they don’t really want these things in their lives. The dreams and goals are often worthy and inspiring things that would make the participants life more full and rich. There isn’t a problem with the destination of where they want to go. The problems that keep most people from succeeding is found in two different obstacles they may encounter on the way to that goal.

Douglas Vermeeren PPM 45

The two problems that they can encounter can be divided into two groups; Feelings and Fiction. Although you can experience both simultaneously we’ll talk about each separately.

Feeling are the emotional concerns that a person encounters on their way to accomplish their dreams. Often these are manifest as feelings of fear, inadequacy, unworthiness and doubt. However this category of feelings can include additional feelings of laziness, contentment, or a willingness to settle for where they are currently. It can also include feelings of discomfort when it comes to new changes required to get to the new goal.

doubt

We will talk shortly about how and who overcomes the feeling obstacle to getting to your goals.

The second group is fiction. These are the stories that people tell themselves that keep them from accomplishing the goal. Another word for these stories might be excuses. Most people think excuses are not based on a perception of reality but rather a lie that is told to keep progress from happening. This may be true some of the time. My experience has reveal that although excuses rarely give power to the person sharing them there rate occasions when the excuse maker is correct. Some of the fiction they are sharing to escape the responsibility of accomplishment is based on fact. In other words the story a person may be telling themselves may indeed be based on real life deficiencies in the plan, the skills, the abilities and the opportunities needed to accomplish the goal. But while there may be real reasons why getting to the goal may be difficult high achievers always find a way around, over of through the obstacle. We’ll talk more about this shortly because the good news with this category is that there is always a way to keep going.

This-is-a-Work-of-Fiction-1

So how do you recognize whether your reasons for struggling with your goal is based on feeling or fiction? Recently I was having a conversation with my 18 year old son. In this discussion he was telling me about a goal he had decided to possibly abandoned. “It was just too hard.” He told me as we begun a discussion on this feeling or fiction conversation. He declared that it was both feeling and fiction that was keeping him from success. I decided to test the theory and you can too with anything preventing you from success.

frustration1

The first step to determine if something is feeling or fiction is to define it. If you can actually define what it is or what would have to happen to get past this obstacle then it is fiction. It is based on a story you are telling yourself. If you need X to happen in order to move forward it is fiction. If you need X as a resource to appear it is fiction. If you need X to go away it is fiction. The good news about fiction is that you can always get help to solve the problem. The bad news is that if you let a fictional story or external excuse stop you you are coming from a reactive perspective. If you haven’t read about the reactive/proactive theory in my articles yet I encourage you to do so. But in a nutshell proactive people own their situation and recognize they have power to change things. A reactive person gives their power away by blaming external sources and they determine that they can do nothing until the problem outside their control is resolved.

If the problem is based on a story or fiction that you are telling yourself if you shift to proactive point of view you will always find some form of solution of something you can do to either get through, around, over or under the problem at hand.

If the problem is feeling it is always internal. It will often have no reason for being. It will just be a feeling. Feelings are experienced often just because you are trying to achieve something new that you’ve never experienced before. There is no problem with feelings. Feelings are normal and natural. Being afraid, nervous or unsure are natural states. They do not mean you can’t do a thing. Often the result of a feeling comes as you decide to interpret the feeling. Some people get nervous and stop. Others experience nervousness and it ignites within them great power, sharpens their mental capacity and primes them to experience a massive rush.

As I interviewed the 400 top achievers in the world many professional athletes and entertainers told me of the kinds of feelings they would have before performances or competitions. Butterflies was a term I heard again and again.

Power over feelings comes as we recognize that they are just that – feelings. The best way to overcome feelings of doubt, fear, unworthiness or nervousness is to just do it. Commit yourself to recognizer he feeling and then do it any ways. The more you push through uncomfortable feelings the better you will get at it.

So the next time you think about quitting and giving up because of either a feeling or a fiction you tell yourself keep going. The finish line is up ahead and you can do it.

Douglas Vermeeren – Are you working on the right stuff?

leave a comment »

Most people work on the experiences and the results they get and they neglect the roots of what made those things happen. In other words they focus on the effects and experiences rather than the cause. As a result many of the things they want to create, like lasting change or new habits for example, never happen. They may experience a sense of excitement as they experience a temporary change or small reward but the real lasting results elude them. It’s almost as if they have cut off a few branches on a tree yet the roots continue to grow the same things over and over again.

Douglas Vermeeren PPM 35

In some ways its like the doctor who treats your condition based on what you tell him about rather than conduct an examination of the symptoms and the situation. The reason this occurs is that the human mind is impatient. It wants to solve a problem and move forward. The easiest stuff to deal with is surface stuff.  Anything deeper takes time.

But it is the deeper stuff where the real problems get solved and lasting change is created. Our thoughts, beliefs, feelings and expectations create our actions and habits and since those things occur below the surface the only way to get things happening in to go deep.

Before we can have any real and lasting results in our life we need to go deeper than just our surface actions. We must investigate why we create what we tend to create and what we feel, expect and believe that have engineered those results.

As we realize where we have begun and make changes the very essence of who we are begins to take shape. And as we are aware of who we are and recognize where we want to be we will arrive closer to our desired outcomes.

Douglas Vermeeren – Are you a slave to a proactive person?

leave a comment »

Reactive people are always slaves to proactive people. Think about it. The proactive person is the one who starts a company and if you are reactive he is your boss. The Proactive person in a relationship knows what they want and moves towards it, while the reactive person is compliant. (And because of that often a toxic nag and complainer.) The proactive person is a leader while the reactive is the follower. And the list could go on.

Douglas Vermeeren ppm 33

Everywhere in reality those who are proactive enlist the help of the reactive. Often the proactive will say and experiences situations where they are unemployable. They have either made too much money or have too much drive to fit in as an employee. No one can pay them what they believe they could make on their own. Once a proactive person has experienced what they can create on their own they never dare return to reactive situation where they allow another person to dictate the activities of their day.

Each person has areas in their life where they are more proactive and reactive. My challenge to you today is to consider what areas of your life you could be more proactive with. In each area you choose to become more proactive and self-reliant your freedom grows.
