Mindset creates movement – Douglas Vermeeren

leave a comment »

Our mindset is a critical factor in creating our successes. Through our mindset we consciously and subconsciously decide what we feel we are capable of, how easily we can progress and even what we are afraid of. If we don’t believe in our minds that we can we never will. In fact, if we our mindset is unsupportive we most likely won’t even try.

Mindset can also be compared to setting a thermostat. With a thermostat the temperature setting is determined and fixed. With mindset we make a resolution and commitment to a specific set of values and we act accordingly.

Douglas Vermeeren ppm 53

You’ve heard that if you believe then you can achieve it. This is true. But even more powerful that is that if you are committed you WILL do it. Level up your mindset, get determined and your will see better results begin to flow to you. It’s not enough to simply believe – YOU MUST GET COMMITTED and that starts with mindset.

Houdini’s great mind trick was on himself

Harry Houndini' s great mind trick was on himself

Harry Houndini' s great mind trick was on himself

Houdini’s great mind trick was on himself

By Douglas Vermeeren

What we believe becomes our reality. An interesting story illustrates this point. Harry Houdini is considered by many to be the world’s greatest escape artist and master magician. Some felt that because of his unique escape talents that he was greatest locksmith that ever lived. He was so confident in his own abilities that wherever he went he delivered the challenge that no lock or restraint could hold him. These challenges even included escaping from formidable jail cells which he did as he travelled through Europe from 1910-1912.

The conditions of the escape were simple. Houdini kept his regular street clothes on, and after being thoroughly search was locked inside the cell with no audience. Within a specified time limit he would free himself. Every time he accepted this challenge he escaped.

But here’s the story of one time that almost resulted in failure…

A small town in Britain invited Houdini to accept a challenge to escape from their jail. This jail cell was the pride of their police force. It was a brand new cell constructed with the most recent technology available. Houdini accepted the invitation and was locked up.

After the room was cleared Houdini took off his jacket and got to work. Hidden in his belt has a flat 10 inch metal tool Houdini had designed to pick locks. He began to work on the lock, but soon he began to realize there was something different about this lock that he had not seen before.

For thirty minutes he worked and worked and got nowhere. He tried everything he could think of to open the lock with no luck. His confidence began to fade and his thoughts shifted to the possibility of defeat.

Time continued to pass. He continued to struggle against the lock. Covered in sweat and  passing the point of exhaustion he collapsed against the door. To his surprise the door gently swung open, revealing that it had never been locked in the first place.

Harry Houdini - The world's great escape artist

Harry Houdini - The world's great escape artist

What we believe becomes our reality. Because Houdini had believed the door was locked he fought against it using the knowledge and experience he had gained from previous encounters. His expectations and beliefs limited him rendering him helpless.

What beliefs are currently locking you down from escaping the false prisons that are keeping you from your greatest self?

Brain science increases sales

with 2 comments

brain

The human brain

Over the last decade more than 98.2% of what we thought we knew about the brain has changed.  One of the things we now understand is that there are 5 ways your brain learns and processes information. Each person learns and sorts information differently.

Studies have shown that these principles can have a dramatic effect for people working in customer service or sales related careers.

Some of those results with customers included:

  • Up to 65% increase in sales and sales volumes
  • Up to 60% decrease in customer complaints and challenges
  • Up to 12 hours a week increase in available time
  • 23% increase in referrals

Obviously this all amounts to more money and less frustration. That’s a goal we all share. These skills to be more effective in sales persuasion are completely learnable by anyone.

Another problem you experience is that there are a lot of agents in your industry competing for the attention of your potential clients. No doubt you’ve attended networking events where you have felt that you blended in and were forgotten.

So what does it take to be remembered?

What does it take for a customer to seek you out?

It doesn’t happen by accident. Another powerful technique that recent brain science has uncovered is called Pattern Priming. One of the benefits of Pattern Priming is that it allows you to position yourself as the person in the room that ‘everyone wants to talk to.’

Pattern Priming is a key to:

  • Generating the right leads
  • Prime your prospects to self select and make purchasing decisions easier
  • Create an ‘elevator speech’ that gets people excited
  • Position yourself as the expert

If you want to learn about how these tools could enhance your bottom line, we will be conducting a training in March. Due to the nature of this training we don’t have room for hundreds to attend. Instead we can only accommodate a small group to work with one on one.

The cities we will visit include:

Calgary, AB – Edmonton, AB – Vancouver, BC – Victoria, BC -Toronto, ON -Portland, OR – Scottsdale, AZ-  Los Angeles, CA –  Las Vegas, NV –  New York, NY –  Honolulu, HI

This post is just to touch base and begin a conversation to see if this might be something you would be interested in learning more about.

Does Meditation Increase stress?

Does meditation increase stress?

Does meditation increase stress?

Does Meditation Increase stress?

By Douglas Vermeeren

Often we hear regularly in our world that to think effectively we need to slow down and make our thoughts become still. We are told that as we learn techniques like mediation we will be able to become more in touch with our thoughts and they will become more productive. This is not entirely true.

While meditation has high value for your productive thinking processes it is only one kind or style of deliberate thought that our mind needs to cultivate for functioning at high levels.

In addition to mediative thinking there are two other productive thinking states I’d like to touch on, creative and constructive thinking. In the same way we bring out our different personalities in certain social settings, we also switch gears between different thinking styles depending on what a specific situation requires.

The Mediative Mode of Thinking – Mediative thinking is generally considered the kind of thinking that puts your mind at ease. While it can put a mind at ease research has demonstrated that it is not necessarily the mode of thinking that relieves the most stress. 1. In fact, research has demonstrated the opposite that often times when we are left to think on the problems of the moment they grow.

Example: A friend of mine who suffered a relationship breakdown and then a divorce confirmed that as she was left alone to think about what was going on it was near impossible to still her mind. In fact, the quiet moments often caused the intensity of her negative thinking to grow.

Depending on the current circumstances in your life mediation and being still is actually dangerous. (If you want to know where the true relief from stress comes, keep reading.)

Often those teaching mediation describe the most successful state of meditation is to think of nothing at all. It’s a lot harder than it sounds. The mind is always on a quest to solve, sort, prepare and repair. Clear thoughts won’t come until the mind has cleaned off the space to do so.

When the mind is clear and stable, meditation then becomes a very powerful tool. Mediation will allow us to reattach ourselves to the values, beliefs and feelings that are most important to us.

Meditation does have its place in building strong thinking. Generally this mode is also considered the recharge mode. It is where our empty cup is prepared to receive more. But if the cup is already full with significant problems it multiplies what is in the cup to overflowing.

When we are ready to receive more it comes most often through the next stage of deliberate thinking…

The Creative Mode of Thinking – When we are relaxed and feel safe, our mind begins to explore possibilities for our present and future. In a relaxed state our mind makes no judgements about what it is possible, it explores whatever it is drawn to. This is where much of our inspiration comes from.   Creativity has a certain liberating energy about it that can lift an individual to new levels of satisfaction.  Creative thinking is also employed every time we recognize a challenge or problem and begin to search for the solution in a spirit of hope. If we look at a problem in a negative way it becomes paralyzing and creative thought is stifled.  All problems are in fact invitations to creativity.   But the creativity only grows in an environment of hope.

Creation is our minds way of finding a path where there was nothing before and the method it uses to make sense of things which are otherwise disorganized.

All problems we encounter are really puzzles. Creativity is where we find the solutions.

When our mind becomes excited about creative possibilities it begins to look for a way to make them happen in real life…

The Constructive Mode of Thinking – The Constructive Mode of Thinking deals with the strategies, plans and organization to create the thoughts into reality. We begin to formulate the actions that will bring the thoughts into a tangible reality in our world.

The research demonstrates that this mode of thinking is in fact where most of our stress is relieved. As we get busy and engage our brain in tasks in the current moment our worries are put on pause. Our subconscious mind sorts them out while our conscious mind gets out of the way. The key to stress relieve or stilling the negative thinking in your mind is to get busy occupying your mind with a task that requires your thinking.

As we talk further about the process of how thoughts become things in the movie we will return to discuss more of this essential thinking mode.

Each of these modes is necessary. We can’t expect to have results if we spend all of our time in the mediation mode any more than to expect results if we spent all our time in the creative mode. Each of these modes are necessary and each are interconnected. You cannot fill the cup with creativity, unless it has been prepared in meditation and it cannot be prepared in meditation unless it has been emptied out in constructive thinking.

Why your big ideas disappear. – How Thoughts Become Things

Electrical charges that stimulate the thought processes of the brain

Neurons with electrical activity

By Douglas Vermeeren

Scientific fact generally begins as a hypothesis or educated guess as to why things are.

Often times these preliminary answers are much more than guesses, they are based on observable principles that have been previously proven or exist in similar situations we already subscribe to. Having said that here is a hypothesis I will put forward to explain an interesting phenomenon we have all observed in relation to thought.

Here’s the phenomenon:

You’ve got a great idea. The inspiring power of it hits you. It is exhilarating. Your mind is buzzing with excitement and it is contagious. And then suddenly your brain stops.

You appear to have reached your limit with the idea. Your thinking then shifts to something different. Because of this shift you doubt whether the ‘good idea’ was really as good as you thought it was.

Or maybe you’ve seen the same phenomenon happen this way. Do you remember a time when you were engaged in conversation with a group of people? The topic has everyone contributing. And then suddenly without warning everything goes silent in the room. No one has anything more to contribute on the previous hot topic.

You’ve probably heard it said somewhere that approximately every seven minutes in a conversation things go silent. This is that exact phenomenon that I am referring to.

Electrical charges that stimulate the thought processes of the brain

Brain activity with electrical activity

While there is no absolute scientific explanation of what thought really is, current neuroscience theory suggests that part of our thought process involves electrical impulses that travel through the axon of the cell and create chemical reactions in the synaptic connections.

The axon can be up to six feet in length and the electrical charge can travel from 2 miles per hour all the way up to 200 miles per hour. When the charge reaches the Dendrites of the cell it actives a chemical which makes the leap over a synapse and the electric charge then continues on it’s journey on the neighboring neuron.1.

So my hypothesis is simple, this electricity that is moving through our brain at the speed of thought is like other forms of electricity that we experience. In other words, it has a specified and limited charge or voltage. In our outside world a charge as it travels gradually loses the potency of its charge.

On the inside world of our brain activity, I believe that the reason our thoughts stop or the conversation goes silent is that simply the particular thought has run out of the electrical charge to keep it going. Much in the same way that spinning top eventually runs out of momentum. My external observances would indicate that if this charge theory is accurate that the average idea charge would last between 7 – 9 minutes.

I would like to research this hypothesis in actuality with a Electroencephalograph for more data. (So anyone out there that can help with this, please call.)

An Electroencephalograph records the electrical activities of the brain. One of the challenges I would have to overcome before engaging in such a study would be, ‘how can an individual unique electrical thought be coded so that it be specifically identified. At this point it seems that no one knows how to do that.

While my hypothesis has not been proven I have found a few items of evidence to support the concept of ideas and emotions dissolving quickly like an electrical would. Starting intense and then losing momentum until there is nothing.

In the late 1960 the popular children’s Sesame Street conducted research into the attention spans of children. They found that rather than making lengthy story lines that children seemed to do much better when following shorter segments or vignettes of about three to five minutes in length. This coincides perfectly with the above hypothesis of the idea or attention charge lasting only a short period of a few minutes. 2.

As a second evidence to support my theory, I found an interesting study where anger management specialists have found that a person feeling the strong emotions of anger, if left unprovoked will have the feelings of anger dissipate in under ten minutes. 3.

Having the ability to activate your attention span and stay focused with important tasks is a key to accomplishing goals and creating success.

So how can you keep your thought charge going longer? In the same way electricity is conducted best when the circuits are clean, clear and made of conductive materials the brain functions best when it is cared for with proper diet, rest and exercise.
