Success in the speaking business is something most professional speakers stove to attain. But the truth is that the personal development or self improvement industry is one of the most competitive fields on the planet. Everything thinks they have powerful advice to share on how to make life better and all want to be rewarded handsomely fro sharing those insights. While many of these lessons are powerful concepts for positive change very few of the “thought leaders” who share them actually rise to high levels of financial success.
I was very fortunate early in my speaking career to find some amazing mentors and as a result I have constructed and followed a system which made me almost immediately financially successful. In my first 6 months as a speaker I earned more than1.6 million dollars US and have had a successful speaking business ever since. Here are a few of the things I see most speakers missing today that make a big difference.
1)Get a mentor – Most speakers are used to sharing advice and not giving it. If you can find a mentor or a coach that understands how to make money in the speaking business and establish yourself as an expert you are much further ahead in this highly competitive business.
2)Develop high level expert content – Content is indeed king. Most of the people populating this business today have very generic and predictable content. You need to be able to solve real problems and take people deeper into your subject of expertise than anyone else.
3)Use a proven business model – Most speaker stop at accepting a fee for a speech or have added a few products or coaching programs or workshops. While those things are all great streams of income they are not the most effective way to monetize your speaking business. (More on this in a future post)
4)Use media and leverage authority – Most speakers remain relatively unknown and hidden in the marketplace. They do not know how to attract media and are too afraid to invest in a publicist or support team.
5)Get on the right stages and build boundaries – Most speakers who are broke will speak anywhere, for any fee and say YES way too much. Recognize that there is a such things as a wrong audience!
6)Build a relationship – One of the big mistakes I see regularly from speakers is that they are too eager to rush an audience into a high priced product or seminar. The audience feels like they are simply a number or a transaction. Focus on providing value first, establishing your credibility as a true solution first and that you are genuinely concerned about the results your audience needs first. If you do these things you will have earned the right to be bold as your audience will want to continue the relationship.

Simplicity linked to success

At first glance it may seem like the most successful, wealthy and influential business leaders in the world have a lot going on. It’s true that they have hectic and busy schedules. Their days are full and very productive and they don’t waste time. While those things are true one thing is certain and that is that their activities are precise and focused. To create high level success creating simplicity and effectiveness is fundamental. Here are three suggestions from my research of top achievers as to how you can create more simplicity and effectiveness in your activities.
Determine your specific mission
Recently I was at a networking event for entrepreneurs. One individual handed me his business card. On it were listed several unrelated businesses opportunities this individual was engaged in. I could immediately tell that he wasn’t extremely successful in any of them. The old saying, “Jack of all trades, master of none” was apparent. One of the most important things that I learned in building my own business with the support of incredible mentors was just because you can do a skill doesn’t mean you should. We only have so much time, ability and energy and of we try to do everything we cannot possibly do them all well. I use the analogy in my seminars of having a single glass of water and a remove full of plants. If you try to water everything it will all die. If you select a small group of plants to nurture they will thrive. Most entrepreneurs try to do too many things and therefore nothing really thrives. Pick a specific mission and dedicate yourself there.
Go deep enough to know your business and focus on solving specific problems
By going deep into an area of expertise in your business and career you develop yourself as an expert. When you spend more time in that specific area you develop thinking and tools that allow you to solve problems in that area better than anyone else. This is same strategy that turns regular doctors into brain surgeons, average athletes into olympians and scientists into astronauts. If you want to become an expert in your business or career expertise will be required.
Your value to others will be in proportion to the problems you are able to solve. If you want to be paid more solve more complex problems. The way more complex problems are solved is to simply spend more time solving problems in that area. Your experience and knowledge in the area will give you what is needed to solve problems in a specific area. It’s that simple.
One of the impressive things to me as I interviewed the 400 top achievers was to observe how how they were to learn about a specific area directly related to their business. They read, researched and talked with everyone they possible could. Sam Walton founder of Walmart would visit the retail stores of his competition and talk with them about how they were doing things every opportunity he had. He even used to do it on family holidays and in far away countries. It was his thirst to understand the world of retailing that lead him to introduce many of the ideas we take for granted in a Walmart today. It was this same thirst that made him the richest man in America for a time.
Eliminate needless activities and time wasters
You’ve heard it said that time is the most important commodity in the world. It is true yet still most people only pay this concept lip service. Most people take longer with activities than is required to solve them. For example, most people feel that a meeting with someone ought to take an hour. I suspect that this is a remnant of the idea that a class in school was an hour so therefore every other meeting should be an hour too. I’ll never forget on of the top achievers who became a mentor to me divided his day into 15 minute increments. If you wanted a meeting with him it was generally allowed 15 minutes. To stay on track we actually put a timer on the table as you talked with him to keep you both on track. With such time limits imposed you didn’t find yourself talking needlessly about the weather, the local sports team or any other kind of fluffy feel good banter. It was straight to the important matters.
Now I’m not saying that we need to eliminate all friendly discussion but average people spend too much time making meaningless conversation and time passes quickly. I recently had a student at one of my events who had a continual problem with meetings running into each other. He was always late and continually falling behind. In addition his meetings with clients were not converting for him. As we talked about the structure of an effective client meeting we found that he was spending way too much time on discussions that did not serve the client. While some of this chit chat may have been polite it did not contribute to his mission.
Simplicity requires setting up boundaries and that means you’ve got to spend some time in preparation to determine what is most valuable to you. When you know what is most important you can start spending your valuable time there.
In conclusion Leonardo Di Vinci was credited for having said that “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Getting to simple takes work, the above suggestions are not easy and they are also just the beginning. As you learn to simplify and get focused your results will improve and success will become possible for you.

An Awesome life is living your life by decision. You are where you want to be, doing the things that excite you, inspire you and bring out the best in you and in those around you.
New year is a time when many people are creating resolutions and planning for the upcoming year. Many people set new goals and make commitments to stop doing some of the things that they think have been holding them back. These resolutions often spark a giggle because most people know that they are not going to be that effective or long lasting.
So what can you do to increase your effectiveness in 2013? Here are a few thoughts:
1)Don’t focus on stopping – focus on starting and doing better. When we focus on stopping a specific behavior it can be difficult. Those behaviors have become habits already. Habits are difficult to change unless we have something better to replace them with. By focusing on the stopping the negative habits of the past we also bring more attention to the negative into our lives. We would get greater value by determining what the positive new traits and habits we wait are and them seek those out so strongly that they crowd out the negative. In other words, set goals for what you WILL do this year, not resolutions for what you will not do this year. And I should also add that progress and productivity are not a matter of doing more. Progress and productivity are a matter of doing better. To become wealthy, more successful, a top achiever or whatever your goals is you must constantly be on the hunt for more effective strategies.
2)Put a plan in place -When you have some ideas of what you want to accomplish this year put a place in place that can be turned into specific action. The primary reason why most goals never get accomplished can be traced down to the fact that there is no system, follow up or path towards completion every contemplated. Don’t be content to just say “I’d like to…” Follow up your declarations and decisions with a plan. What can you do starting today? A purpose without a plan is not progress.
3)Take action now – Even with a plan in place you need to get started. Action is the ingredient that transforms all ideas from a mind into reality. Without action you cannot have a new reality. It may sound simple but for most people it is not. They often wait for conditions to be perfect or at least more ideal. Don’t wait. Conditions will never be ideal. But as you take actions conditions will change. Top achievers do not wait for conditions, they create them. You must do the same. You must be willing to act in faith on what could be, not what already is. Do not search for ideal conditions, search for possibilities. You may remember something I said in The Opus Movie, “Top achievers are not perfectionists, they are improvisors.” I believe this is crucial. Don’t wait for ideal or perfect conditions to act. Get started today!
I hope these three thoughts have given you some thoughts to consider as you look at how you begin to approach 2013, but remember it doesn’t require a new year to make a change. Change is not attached to a specific date on a calendar. You can set goals and resolutions at any time. So don’t be afraid to come back and reevaluate and readjust later on this year. The key is to think carefully about what you really want and the get moving in that direction.
