There are many people around us each day who have accomplished a high level of success. We sometimes see them on tv or read about them in best selling books. When we see these people it is not uncommon for us to feel a sense of awe and literally explain “wow!” Often times we may be tempted to look at these individuals and think that they are lucky or somehow endowed with some unique magical attributes that have brought success to them.

By creating this idea that there are skills unique to these individuals it gives us an escape route or rather an exit to be able to excuse ourselves from attempting and accomplishing the same levels of success. While there are certainly unique skills at a high level of success the truth is that they did not arrive in a magical way.

In addition, most of these people were just like you and I at the beginning. They just added one ingredient that made those skills stronger, better and powerful. That one ingredient is to turn the actions they knew they needed to accomplish their desired success into habit.

Habit is the key to creating lasting success. We literally become what we repeatedly think about and do.

But the answer is not that simple. Developing habits takes hard work, dedication, consistent effort, refining, recommitting when things don’t go well, and staying on track especially when things go right.

Developing the right habits can also be an elusive journey. Once you know what you want to develop as a success in your life how can you determine which habits you need to develop. The Chinese philosopher Confucius declared that the very best way to develop wisdom is to imitate. In modern parlance we call this modelling. If you wish to create success in a specific area you need to find role models who have accomplished success in the same area and duplicate their habits. Developing habits therefore begins with intense study to identify the habits that you will need to create the same success.

Often I encounter people who pick and choose elements of those habits that they will duplicate and other things that the decide are not needed. Maybe the things that they reject they fell are too hard or inconvenient. Maybe they feel like some of those habits will be too difficult to implement or take too much time to develop. What they experience in the end is only partial success. When you pick and choose and decide to do only that which is easy you get less than the result of your mentors.

Imagine if you wanted to be a heart surgeon and you decided to only attend half the classes. In doing so you would rob yourself of the lessons you would need from the entire experience. When developing the habits of success you cannot pick and choose. You have got to become engaged and immersed.

Developing new habits is hard work. Anytime change is required the commitment that comes with those changes is massive. It requires you to literally be obsessed with the new destination. You have got to establish a strong WHY. That WHY must be bold and emotionally charged. We only stay engaged with the activities that have significant meaning to us. Especially when the going gets hard. When you have a powerful and emotionally charged why it is more likely that you will stay on track and continue to practice the habits that will lead you to success.

There is a statement attributed to Michaelangelo. He allegedly said to someone complimenting him as a master, “It you knew how hard I had to work you wouldn’t call me a master.” Whether the event actually happened or the statement is true I can’t say. But what I have noticed as I have worked with top achievers around the world is that the statement is true. Every master started as a disaster. To get to high performance levels much hard work is required.

My challenge to you is to identify several new habits you need to develop in order to start moving towards your most significant goals. Push forward and recognize that habits are also developed in much the same way as turning on a dimmer switch. You aren’t going to get it right all at once but it will get better and better with hard work and dedication! Get started now!

It is estimated that each day we have more than 70,000 unique thoughts. So what is it that controls our thoughts? How does our mind select which thoughts to develop and which thoughts to ignore? How do the prominent thoughts become things?

In order for thoughts to develop into reality they must be permitted to develop in the mind.

As they develop they grow and are built upon. If the spark of thought continues to grow action can result. Action will then bring that thought into reality.

Many of the thoughts that develop in the mind do not become a reality. We have all had thoughts that began as a brilliant burst of inspiration. Perhaps these ideas even got you excited for a few minutes, maybe an hour, a day or even a week… Then they faded away.  Even though they started as powerful ideas they did not end up as a tangible reality in your life?

How could an idea so bright and exciting turn dim or disappear altogether.

 

Even more frustrating are the ideas that do not disappear. They anchor themselves in the back or your mind, they cling to you waiting for the day that you may act upon them. These are probably the most painful ideas. You know in your heart that if you did something with these kinds of ideas they would really make a difference in your life.

 

What is it that holds us back? What is it that keeps us from creating the reality we are thinking about?

One of the most significant factors that determines our reality are our expectations.

What we believe could happen is the line that all thoughts must pass in order to become action. Taking action on a thought is the way it is translated into reality.

Expectations can include what we believe a specific outcome will be, but also what we believe we are entitled to and how we believe we should act in certain situations.

 

As expectations can often be based on past experience or pre-determined values often our expectations will cause our thinking to follow a similar course to what we have done in the past.

 

Expectations of outcome often guide our thoughts and our behavior to conform our new experience with a past situation. Here is an example of where we have experienced this:

 

  • We also see expectations at work in the movies. If I said Tom Hanks is in a movie what kind of movie do you think you’d be going to watch? What if I said Ben stiller? Would you envision a different kind of film? And when you went to see it how would you feel if it didn’t jive with your expectations? You’d be disappointed. In fact, Hollywood has seen a lot of movies over the years that didn’t make it simply because they changed the formula, or constructed a story with an actor contrary to your expectations.

 

Entitlement is also an overlooked element of expectations.  What you feel you are entitled to will dictate your thinking on certain matters.

 

There was a study conducted some years ago to determine the role that sacrifice or activity had on entitlement. The experiment involved two groups. One group was given a variety of tasks to complete and then after completing the work, was ushered into an empty room with a table and chair. On the table was an envelope with $50 bill and the words thank you written on the envelope.

 

The second group was simply ushered into the room. They had no work to do. The same envelope rested on the table.

 

The majority of people in the first group that had done the work felt that the envelope was left there for them and it was payment for their efforts. Most in the second group felt the envelope was meant for someone else and it was probably left there by mistake.

 

Work, sacrifice and effort give the mind a sense of entitlement.

 

Entitlement is a mysterious thing. I often encounter people who feel that they have not yet paid the price to have what they want, to be who the really feel they should be, or have the relationships they deserve because they have not sacrificed what is required. This is a victim mentality and it keeps many from acquiring the reality they truly desire.

 

The next expectations are expectations about how we believe we should act.

 

I have seen examples of this at numerous seminars and motivational events. This lesson is often used by the speaker to teach people to think differently and to consider that there are often more direct routes than those we initially consider to solve a problem.

 

This is how the scenario plays out, the speaker typically takes a prize (I’ve even seen it done with $100 bill) and simply holds it up and asks “Who would like to have this prize?” Naturally a number of hands raise within the group. He asks again, “Who wants this prize?” Still more hands are raised in the group and often people begin to get a little excited. At this point the speaker asks again with more intensity in his voice, “Who wants the prize?” By this time the audience usually gets it and an audience member actually leaves their set and comes to claim the prize. Again this is a great example of social expectation.

 

Why won’t we leave the seat instantly to claim the prize? We don’t leave our seat to get the prize because we question ourselves. Is it the right thing to do? What will others think of me? Is it proper?  We ask ourselves similar questions on a daily basis that and as a result we prevent ourselves from acting on the thoughts that will empower us most.

 

In a study of the most successful businesses and inventions of all time, you will find that the majority of these successes are innovations on existing ideas. I always get a smile when I hear that Thomas Edison is considered the greatest inventor of all time. It isn’t true. Every major invention that he produced from the light bulb, to the phonograph to the motion picture camera is an innovation on a earlier effort by someone else. You can be an innovator too.

 

You don’t have to think according to a set of imaginary rules.

 

Expectations are a great source of power as much as they can be a great obstacle to your success.

 

If we expect to fail we will not think in empowering ways. We do not dedicate action energy to created failing expectations a reality. That doesn’t mean we don’t dedicate thought to create negative expectations. we do that quite often. If we believe that expectation to be the coming reality, we will create it positive or negative.

 

If we want to create the life we really want we have got to expect it can happen. When we expect to succeed, our thoughts become like a magnet directing all our energies to supporting the expectation.

 

Just a few more thoughts on why expectation is important

The subconscious mind seeks to find solutions to challenges quickly and so it seeks for the most direct route to solutions in the thinking processes. The mind doesn’t really care if the solution is positive or negative. It just wants an answer. When we are on “automatic” pilot, so to speak, our expectations guide thinking almost entirely.

 

Because our mind is always looking for immediate solutions we think and act from a reactive position.   Essentially what our mind is doing is trying to protect us. It is constantly analyzing scenarios and situations to prevents us from experiencing harm or other things we may need to defend against.

 

So how can we build positive expectations?

Positive and empowering expectations must be build on purpose and ahead of time. They cannot be reactionary.

 

Why must they be planned ahead of time and how can that help? In order to explain why it is important to plan ahead of time what you to expect let me address an important characteristic of how our mind remembers.

 

Try to remember two things, notice which of the two things is easier.

 

1)What was the date that United States entered world War 2?

2)What did your first love look like?

 

If you are like most people you found the first question to be much harder than the second. Why is that? The first question dealt with the recall part of your memory. It was a cold hard fact your mind went searching for.

 

The second dealt with recognition. You probably also spent a lot more time thinking about the second question and you might even still be thinking about it now. emotion is attached more to recognition than recall. for those of you who are familiar with the 5 ways the brain learns this would be experiential learning versus factual learning.

 

This is the point: It is a lot easier for your brain to recognize something than it is to recall it.

 

Back to how this effects expectations.

 

If you build your positive expectations clearly, carefully, and emotionally you will have greater power to recognize these expectations and when you are thinking in harmony with them. Your mind will begin to bring your thinking into a supportive position to these expectations and look for evidence to support your new expectations.

 

Your mind also recognizes what is not in harmony with your expectations and discards those thoughts.

 

Expectation can be used in a positive way. Once we begin to expect things to occur in a way which is empowering to us our thoughts begin to direct our actions to follow that course.

 

What we expect, our thinking will support.

 

Expect good things and your thoughts will follow! If your thoughts follow you will begin to see the fruits of these expectations become a reality in your life.

Are you Pattern Primed for Success?

It’s time to head back to school. As everyone starts off with a fresh view and clean slate. If you want to add a significant brain tool to how you learn this year then listen up, because we have something powerful for you.  And even if you’re not a student listen up  because the technique we are about to share has been scientifically proven to help in a variety of settings including work, family life and staying focused with important goals.

The principle is called Pattern Priming. And here’s how it works:

Our brains are wired in a very unique way that strives to seek out patterns and seeks out the completion with all stimuli that it encounters.

That’s one of the reasons why we sometimes have the urge to finish peoples sentences, feel the need to finish a TV show even though we may be bored with it, why kids are told to finish their dinner and why the optical illusion on this page tells your brain there is a square between the four circles when it is not there. Our brain fills in the blanks and is constantly on the look out for other patterns to complete or questions to answer.

The principle of pattern priming utilizes this natural tendency of the brain. Pattern Priming is simply this. You prime your brain by creating blanks that your brain will crave to fill.

Pattern priming utilizes our brains specific ability to recognize. Recognition is a powerful system our mind uses to file. Recognition is not only used to categorize new information, but also to retrieve it when using our memory. There are two kinds of memory retrieval; Recognition and basic information recall. Studies have demonstrated that our ability is far more powerful for recognition than it is for basic information recall.

To illustrate participate in this experiment, If I asked you the what was the date of the Apollo 11 lunar landing on the moon are you able to recall the exact date? Now if I asked you to recognize the specific date from the following dates: August 14, 1972; December 3, 1984; July 20, 1969, are you able to pick it out of the options available to you?  Which is easier? If you had been exposed to that historical date prior to this experiment you will have found that recognition of an existing answer is always easier than attempting to reproduce an answer on your own.

This is also one of the reasons we are often much better at remembering the faces than the names of people we meet.

Recognition a powerful system that our brain utilizes to quickly interpret a situation. And recognition is a key factor in being able to pattern prime.

Let me give a personal example from my own life of how pattern priming helped me solve a problem I struggled with. I have always suffered form learning difficulties in school. Most of these challenges have had to do with attention or lack of ability to focus.

While in college I struggled with my first course in general psychology. I loved the information, but I had a hard time following the readings in the text. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed reading the information, I just could not get much of it to stay in my brain.  I couldn’t anchor it because I had no context or application strategy. (We can talk about those points in another post.) Then I learned the idea of priming.

My priming technique was simple. Rather than just read through the text book hoping for results, I started my study session by creating a series of questions that I thought could be on my tests. Often times I would get these from the chapter summaries in the book.  I also began to ask the teacher after class more questions about what he thought was the most important points in this weeks assignment. With more than 25 questions or blanks to fill I began to read the text book.

My mind was now primed not just to read but to search.  When the answered appeared in the readings they were now vivid and almost popped off the page.  My brain was pattern primed to seek for closure by finding the answers.

From that day on I changed the way that I learned. Rather than look for answers I looked for questions. When I created unanswered patterns in my mind I found my brain holding onto the answers more firmly as I found them. Effective learning, I found was not a matter of taking more notes in class, but asking as many relevant questions as I could come up with so that may brain could get to work.

The results for me were quite dramatic. My teachers and I saw an improvement from a D to B+ and then to an A in just a matter of weeks.

While the above example may seem simple, pattern priming works. Whether it is to find an answer to a question in a school course, fill in the blank on a design, stay focused with goals that matter or simply to find closure on an idea, priming is a powerful tool for directing focus and getting the results you are looking for. Put your mind on a mission by priming it to seek out and zero-in on the results that you want in your life right now.
