Don’t suck at selling # 2 by Douglas Vermeeren
Don’t blend in

Whenever I talk about this concept in our seminars so many salespeople turn crazy. Either they start doing real gimmicky things to attract attention which can sometimes mean they become the crazy guy with the colourful socks in the office or the outrageous ties. I even saw one lady who made it a ritual to run around the room quickly and do a lap giving everyone a high five every time she made a sale at her car dealership. (She thought for some reason people liked to see her come to life like those buskers dressed as robots who do something when you drop in a quarter.) While these surface things may be novel what I am really talking about here is different.

If you want to really stand out you need to stand out for the person that it actually matter for, and that’s your customer. (Who cares if you stand out for coworkers anyways, they aren’t paying you.)

So here’s the whole thing about NOT blending it. You need to consider how your competition is serving (or not serving) your marketplace. You need then turn up what you re doing to exceed customer expectations! This is where and how you can stand out in a way that makes you successful and rich.

What can you do that demonstrates you are really interested in seeing your customer succeed? How are you continuing the relationship after the sale? How are you treating those that don’t buy from you? How ar eyou helping them to feel you are a real person who cares? How are you preparing for delivery? How are you helping them feel qualified?

Lots to think about here. Just don’t be gimmicky — be useful. Be a salesperson — not a dork!

Money on your mind?

Wealth is found in your capacity to solve problems. The bigger the problem you can solve the more value you can add to others and ultimately the more wealth you will receive. Most people try to solve all of their problems by themselves. That’s why they are broke.

Build a strong network that you can draw upon to solve the problems that appear in your life and the lives of others. One of the things that I have learned form my mentors is to become a organizer of people to solve problems. When an opportunities appears rather than thinking about how I can solve it I think first of who in my network can solve it. I then say yes to solving that problem and delegate the activities to do so to others. In the end I am compensated for organizing the solution.

College-Tuition

Recently a friend of mine posted a new article on Facebook about how in his area the school system has decided to start teaching about money in the local high school. I think this is a great start as most schools don’t educate students about what ends up being one of the most important life skills that they will ever gain.

My challenge is that whenever these money courses are offer they are general taught by financial institutions or people within that system. Those advisors are trained to invite you to save, invest in specific investment instruments and follow their prescribed pattern. Most of the time people who follow this route maintain an average yet secure income.

That is one route to understanding money.

Why I want to know is why don’t they ever invite the entrepreneur mindset to come in to talk about money. This group far surpasses the institutional people in terms of personal worth and and creativity. They also see money in far different ways that the ‘save and sit on it’ crowd.

If you really want to understand the economics of society you need to invite those who are conducting transactions into the conversation. Just sayin’

I do lots of stuff wrong. And so do lots of other top achievers. If you haven’t done lots wrong its because you haven’t done much of anything. One thing is for sure that its very easy to do stuff wrong. It doesn’t take any special skill or aptitude. Its one of the most easy things in the world to do. And the funniest part of mistakes is that they arrive whether you intend them to  or not. Those who make the most and the biggest mistakes are never aiming for that. Often we have the best intentions and are really wanting to help and bless others, but sometimes things go wrong. It is safe to avoid all of this. Sometimes we don’t need the attention our mistakes make. But here’s the deal folks. If you really are committed to doing big things there will be big mistakes. Don’t focus on those though. Perfection isn’t the goal – Progress is.

douglas-vermeeren-power-quote-13A hundred years from now haters don’t matter and time often forgives mistakes. A friend told me the other day something remarkable he had noticed and I had to agree with him. Anyone doing great things will never criticize another person making mistakes. They are above that and they understand how essential those challenges are to creating success.

Things will go wrong in business, relationships, finances, friendships and more! Communications may cross. Expectations may be understood. But if you are going to create you can’t stay focused on that for long. Fix what you can and move on. Try to avoid making the mistakes but recognize they will happen.

As I interviewed more than 400 of the worlds top achievers I quickly saw that all of these people had made mistakes. Some of them were involved in law suits, allegations of poor judgement, some had divorces in their past, others had bankruptcies. But they didn’t focus on that.

And what was really funny (and I have experienced this too) is that as soon as success began to arrive those who had earlier criticized them asked for help or favors.

I also found it funny that right after I put out my first movie The Opus haters came out from every direction.I was sitting with a friend from the recording industry shortly thereafter and he expressed that he had seen this a million times with recording artists. The minute they had a success everyone hated them. (What’s with humans anyways?) well, he told me something that has always stayed with me. No matter what anyone says now they can’t take away the fact that I made a movie. Haters can’t take away accomplishments.  Pretty profound.

So here’s the lesson – Do you best! But when the imperfections arrive don’t get stuck on them. Keep moving towards your goals!
