Do you have to be a shark to sell? Learn to Sell or Die – Douglas Vermeeren
Salesmen are famous for being aggressive. Is there truth to the idea that salesmen need to be “salesmean” in order to create success? (By the way when I say Sales MEN I mean both men and women. Douglas Vermeeren just using the term generically. Some women are crazy aggressive too.)
So back to the question at hand. Do you have to be a shark to succeed in sales?
This is a question that I have researched and thought about for a long time. Probably the biggest reason this question has intrigued me is that I don’t feel like a shark. I don’t think it’s my selling style. In fact, sometimes the shark approach felt artificial if I tried it and in some cases I could see that I had just become an intimidating nut job. Now I know that the shark thing works for some people. A lot of my buddies in the personal development world sell like sharks form the stage. It appears to work for them. (Although their refund rates are crazy high. People buy in the moment because of the shark like attack, but they quickly seem to have buyers remorse when they actually realize what they’ve bought.) It’s also interesting to note that self-proclaimed sales expert Grant Cardone takes a very shark like approach. “Dominate your marketplace…etc. etc. etc.” Again I think it works for him and don’t get me wrong I think he has a lot of great tools. I am a fan not a hater. (But let’s look at the marketplace today – the day of the SHARK is quickly disappearing. There’s no way he justify or maintain the title of top sales trainer if he sells in an old paradigm. He’s good but not that good. By the way where his power really lies is in his marketing. That’s where he’s a master. And that’s why you believe what he’s saying. Again Grant no disrespect. Just love a man. I do love lots of what you do. But just keeping it real.)
It is a day of conversation and respect. Not a day for domination or hard sell tactics. There are just too many choices out there to be overbearing and forceful. The old adage of getting your customers to like you still holds true. Sales are made through relationships now more than ever!!!!
With so many options available online and globally people are buying from those they resonate with and trust. It’s that simple.
So here’s a little something for you to think about.
Now get out there and get selling…
Are you ready to take your organization higher?
Are you ready to give them the tools to sell more?
Are you ready to help them become more productive?
Then look no further.
