I do lots of stuff wrong – Douglas Vermeeren

I do lots of stuff wrong. And so do lots of other top achievers. If you haven’t done lots wrong its because you haven’t done much of anything. One thing is for sure that its very easy to do stuff wrong. It doesn’t take any special skill or aptitude. Its one of the most easy things in the world to do. And the funniest part of mistakes is that they arrive whether you intend them to  or not. Those who make the most and the biggest mistakes are never aiming for that. Often we have the best intentions and are really wanting to help and bless others, but sometimes things go wrong. It is safe to avoid all of this. Sometimes we don’t need the attention our mistakes make. But here’s the deal folks. If you really are committed to doing big things there will be big mistakes. Don’t focus on those though. Perfection isn’t the goal – Progress is.

douglas-vermeeren-power-quote-13A hundred years from now haters don’t matter and time often forgives mistakes. A friend told me the other day something remarkable he had noticed and I had to agree with him. Anyone doing great things will never criticize another person making mistakes. They are above that and they understand how essential those challenges are to creating success.

Things will go wrong in business, relationships, finances, friendships and more! Communications may cross. Expectations may be understood. But if you are going to create you can’t stay focused on that for long. Fix what you can and move on. Try to avoid making the mistakes but recognize they will happen.

As I interviewed more than 400 of the worlds top achievers I quickly saw that all of these people had made mistakes. Some of them were involved in law suits, allegations of poor judgement, some had divorces in their past, others had bankruptcies. But they didn’t focus on that.

And what was really funny (and I have experienced this too) is that as soon as success began to arrive those who had earlier criticized them asked for help or favors.

I also found it funny that right after I put out my first movie The Opus haters came out from every direction.I was sitting with a friend from the recording industry shortly thereafter and he expressed that he had seen this a million times with recording artists. The minute they had a success everyone hated them. (What’s with humans anyways?) well, he told me something that has always stayed with me. No matter what anyone says now they can’t take away the fact that I made a movie. Haters can’t take away accomplishments.  Pretty profound.

So here’s the lesson – Do you best! But when the imperfections arrive don’t get stuck on them. Keep moving towards your goals!

Don’t get discouraged – Douglas Vermeeren

Don’t get discouraged

By Douglas Vermeeren

Things can go wrong. Things can go really wrong although you had good or even great intentions. Obstacles arise that you hadn’t planned for. People change their minds or sometimes lie to get their way. Your efforts don’t always produce the results you expected. feelings get hurt unintentionally or things you say or are said to you can misunderstood.  Sometimes even the weather won’t cooperate. And we can get discouraged when things like this happen. When we are discouraged its very difficult to perform at our best and see situations and opportunities clearly. we tend to paint everything with a cynical or less than enthusiastic point of view.

Things don’t always go perfect. Or do they?

Often we are quick to judge whether an event or situation is positive or negative. What makes an even positive or negative? Most people would say the results or the way it makes me feel. This definition can be a little misleading. The problem with the hastiness of this definition is that it instantly has an effect of how we perform and what we are willing to believe. It immediately changes our desires and dedication to what we may be trying to do.

The truth of the matter is in handiness nearly everyone I have ever met have admitted that sometimes they are very grateful that certain things did not work out. They often are excited for the fact that because something didn’t work out they were able to discover better opportunities and situations waiting for them just ahead. So then was the negative experience really a negative experience or was it the seeds of a more positive opportunity just ahead?

This is why whenever something challenges comes along we need to do our best to deal with the matter at hand but recognize that this event may be the cataylst to unlock the more positive experience just a short distance away. When we get discouraged we shut off many possibilities.

Now I want to clarify I’m not saying its not okay to feel hurt, frustrated, maybe even angry at times. Those are natural human emotions and you will experience them. What I am saying is don’t get discouraged. What discouragement is defined as is the removal of the courage to move forward. DON’T DO IT.  Get mad, get angry, be hurt – just don’t quit.

Students at Personal Power Mastery have expressed at times how had they quit they would never have found the perfect job. started the business that made them wealthy, found their soul mate and in one case I am aware of beat a terminal illness.

Life is not easy. That much I agree with.

But it is easier for those don’t get discouraged. When you move forward with hope things get more hopeful.

It is time to recognize that it is not our business to declare what a negative situation is. Because they seldom turn out that way in the long run. Now is your time – Make it count!

Douglas Vermeeren – CHANGE: It begins with Influence

leave a comment »

Change has been the recent subject of many of my posts and articles. The reason why is that change is such an important topic. To get to new outcomes in life and achieve higher levels of success, self worth or power change is required. Naturally you’ve heard the logic that if you keep doing what you’ve always done you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten. While this sounds very easy on the surface to do new things can require sometimes overwhelming change. Even for the brave and courageous there are changes that are just very difficult to make.

One of the biggest obstacles that I have noticed as I have taught change to my students is they often begin their desires for change to focus on things outside of their control. For example, they want to change their spouse, boss, their children and so forth. Often times they find themselves in consequences they created or fell into and rather than face those consequences they want to change those too. The truth is that while change can begin quickly the results or new solutions of change sometimes take time to unravel the problems that exist in the moment.

Often change is temporary or ineffective because the person making the change becomes discouraged when things aren’t working as quickly as they’d like. This article is not on the speed of change although there are many things we can do to get lightening speed change. But rather this is on the one things that slows change more than anything else.  And that is to give our power of change away to things beyond our influence.

Douglas Vermeeren PPM 40You can only change what you choose to own. In other words, you can only have power over the things within your influence. I’ve often heard the argument when a relationship isn’t working “Why should I change. I’m okay It’s him/her that’s the problem.” That may be true (or not) but the one thing I will tell you is that every circumstance is the result of an equation. You + The other person = the Situation. Maybe it could look like this 1 + 1 = 2. In order to change the situation it is not necessary to change the other person. Starting with you will actually also change the results. If you change yourself to a 2 instead of 1 the equation looks like this: 2 + 1 = 3.

Changing the other person or other element of the equation rarely works in the long term. Sure a person may rise their behaviour to respond to the last argument or frustration. but it is never lasting.

However when you take the first steps to change – everything can change. Remember though it can take time and patience, but it will change. It has to – that’s just the way equations work out. When you change what you do you change what you get.

MyKnot-4319

So the next time you are tempted to require change of someone else recognize that it will not give you long lasting change. I have always loved the saying, “People are like string you can pull them along, but you can never push them.” If you want the situation to rise lead it there.

Douglas Vermeeren – What are you looking for?

leave a comment »

What do you spend your time doing? Especially when you are surfing the internet. What do you look for? What you seek out in your spare time, when no one is watching or when you are not responsible to report back to anyone? What you seek out on your own without prodding or supervision of others reveal much about what your most important goals in your life are.

Douglas Vermeeren PPM 36Are you on a quest to make yourself better? Are you seeking to improve yourself?

If you are dissatisfied with the outcomes you are experiencing in life it can be traced directly back to what you look for in life. If you are genuine and committed to making your life better you will be seeking it out in the smallest moments of your life.

That which simply distracts or entertains will never fulfill. We always feel best as we are striving for progress. The more massive the action the more fulfilled and powerful we feel. Strive to be more! Reach for your best! Make yourself into the YOU that ou dream about! That is the YOU that you deserve!

Douglas Vermeeren – Are you working on the right stuff?

Most people work on the experiences and the results they get and they neglect the roots of what made those things happen. In other words they focus on the effects and experiences rather than the cause. As a result many of the things they want to create, like lasting change or new habits for example, never happen. They may experience a sense of excitement as they experience a temporary change or small reward but the real lasting results elude them. It’s almost as if they have cut off a few branches on a tree yet the roots continue to grow the same things over and over again.

Douglas Vermeeren PPM 35

In some ways its like the doctor who treats your condition based on what you tell him about rather than conduct an examination of the symptoms and the situation. The reason this occurs is that the human mind is impatient. It wants to solve a problem and move forward. The easiest stuff to deal with is surface stuff.  Anything deeper takes time.

But it is the deeper stuff where the real problems get solved and lasting change is created. Our thoughts, beliefs, feelings and expectations create our actions and habits and since those things occur below the surface the only way to get things happening in to go deep.

Before we can have any real and lasting results in our life we need to go deeper than just our surface actions. We must investigate why we create what we tend to create and what we feel, expect and believe that have engineered those results.

As we realize where we have begun and make changes the very essence of who we are begins to take shape. And as we are aware of who we are and recognize where we want to be we will arrive closer to our desired outcomes.

Douglas Vermeeren – Focus on What you can DO and the results will surprise you.

When we focus on what we can do we are proactive. When we focus on things we can’t do or the things we can’t change we are reactive. A reactive state or individual gives the power of choice away. It places the ability to make a situation better outside themselves. By giving this power away the individual becomes dependant on outside influences to determine their destiny.

Douglas Vermeeren ppm 27

When we focus on the things we can change none of our energy is wasted. We begin to take back our power and even the situations which we thought we had no control over will begin to change. As we start working with what we have its almost as though a magical universal power steps in to bring us what we need to get our desire met – even if those things our outside of our influence.

Recently I had an experience that illustrated this. I had a challenge to solve in my business. Much of the challenge was beyond anything I could control. I decided I would do everything in power with everything that I could within my power. A very short time later I received a phone call from someone I hadn’t talked to in months. They had an opportunity to present to me that brought solutions to several of the elements of this challenge beyond my control. It was incredible. I had not reached out to this individual or made them aware of my challenge. The Universe knew and put this person in my path with help.

Start with what you can do and the momentum and commitment of that will bring you the other pieces you need.

In addition often when we begin to confront what the elements we have control over we begin to recognize elements that we may have initially thought were out of our control that actually are in our ability to do something with. Its almost as if we can’t shine a light on these elements until we have started to work with the elements that evident and immediately before us.

In the Movie The Opus, I said “There are no such thin as problems. Everything is a puzzle and there are solutions to puzzles.” If we begin to look at problems and challenges as puzzles they become much more easy to solve.
