Are you Proactive? What difference does it make?

Being proactive or taking responsibility for your actions and choices is the first step towards creating any success in real life. If we avoid responsibility or choose to be reactive to what’s going on around us we actually give away our power. As we give away our power we also lose our ability to create outcomes that are important to us.

When we live in a reactive mode we become paralyzed and our world shrinks. We give up the right make choices as we by default give this power to others.

You can recognize a reactive person by the behaviours and language. Their actions often appear as follows:

They are easily offended

They blame others

They are often highly emotional (Super Highs and Super Lows)

They get angry easily and often

They say hurtful things

They criticize and judge others

They complain

They wait for things to happen

Find themselves often engaged in drama

Change only when they must

Unwilling to learn or follow

They are often financially broke

Paralyzed when problems appear

Always late

Disorganized

Use contention and intimidation as a tool

Don’t own their mistakes

The language they use is often as follows:

I have to

They made me

I must

I can’t

I don’t have the time, monte, opportunity, friends, resources etc.

It happened because of X

Because of these approaches reactive people always find their world shrinking. A shrinking universe is connected to diminishing opportunity and scarcity. You can never have abundance on any level in a setting where scarcity is nurtured.

The good news is that people are neither 100% proactive or reactive. We are all somewhere along a continuum. You are reactive some of the time and proactive some of the time. My encouragement to you is to identify areas where you are reactive and seek for improvement. Even a small degree of improvement will begin to open up more opportunities for choice. More choices simply equals more happiness and success. You’ll also find that taking responsibility sooner and more fully decreases the amount of negative stress in your life. When we take responsibility even for the things we don’t like in our life we immediately gain the power to change those things. You can only change what you choose to own.

I travel around the globe and have had the chance to discuss the rules of awesome with people everywhere striving to be more awesome. As I have I have found a common concern among these people in my interviews on the streets of major cities and rural communities. I have seen the same common concern appear in the classroom among the youth. I have heard the same concern voiced among those who enter my seminar rooms.

Overall perhaps this has been the most common issue that keeps people from living an awesome life.

My definition of an awesome life is as follows: An Awesome life is living your life by decision. You are where you want to be, doing the things that excite you, inspire you and bring out the best in you and in those around you.

The most common feeling that keeps people from living an awesome life are feeling of unworthiness.

Unworthiness is any feeling which interferes in your ability to create an inspiring life. It may come from feelings of self-doubt. It can be guilt from unresolved pain or hurt. It can stem from mean things others have said. It can come from a series of experienced that leave you feeling incapable.

Whatever the source of these feelings of unworthiness they are all lies. The state of unworthiness does not exist.

Each being born on the planet is a being of infinite worth. Although we may make mistakes or may find ourselves on the receiving end of negative people, circumstances or events those situations do not define us.

One of the most amazing abilities that humans have is that we have the ability to make choices. Each choice is an opportunity to create a new future. The ability to make a choice is not based on how successful a person has been in the past or determined by the value another may assign to you. Choices are available to all and as such all are worthy to make the choice for awesome.

Often at my seminars I find individuals who struggle with the idea that they are worthy to create the life they desire. The boldness required to move forward with an awesome life begins with belief. In moments where this boldness is required it is not uncommon for doubt and worthiness issues to strike a defeating blow. Overcoming these feelings is not an immediate or quick fix.

I often compare this experience like holding a cube of ice in your hand while it melts. It is not comfortable, but to make it go away (meaning the ice) you have to keep hanging on. As you begin to experience the tiniest glimpses of awesome your faith in your worthiness will grow.

Get started working on yourself now and when the doubts appear keep going. Don’t listen the negative voices that will try to sabotage you and steer you off your true path. As those voices rise from a whisper to a shout have strategies in place that can remind you that the negativity will pass and you need to keep going. A few of the strategies that I think work well are having a vision board, listening to a special motivational song, surrounding yourself by inspiring people and engaging in physical exercise. However, I have found one quick solution that also builds feelings of worth quicker than any other method. And that is service.

As you serve others your sense of worth explodes. You can’t feel bad for yourself while lifting others. It becomes even more powerful as you select someone to serve that can’t possibly repay you.

In conclusion I want to reaffirm that you are worthy to be awesome. Your past may be a reference point but it is not your destination. Go forward recognizing that you can repair any kind of past. You can rise above any haters and detractors. And negative situations are temporary. No mistake is permanent. There will be tough days ahead. But stay the course and cling to the moments of awesome when they appear. When you seek awesome it clings to you.

Be Awesome in London

While in London we took to the streets to ask people what they felt was the key to living an awesome life. We found some great people with wonderful answers. Here’s a video:

1 simple step that will put you on the road to financial freedom

Unknown

What does your financial freedom look like to you?

I often ask this question at my seminars and the responses I get are often as follows:

“I’d like spend more time on vacation.”

“I’d like to live in the house of my dreams and drive the vehicle of my choice.”

“I’d like to quit my job and spend more time with family.”

Although these answers are nice – they are not correct.

Financial freedom is not about what experiences you will have and how you think you will spend your day to day life.

Financial freedom is an exact number. How much exactly do you need to meet your obligations each month.

When you passively achieve the exact amount of income you need so that all your obligations and expenses are met you are financially free. Does this make sense? That monthly amount is your obligation or prison. So once you have attained it passively it’s no longer your prison. It’s satisfied without you.

The problem for most people is that they can tell you what they want (The experience) but they can’t tell you what it takes to make it happen.(The exact number) If your goals are specific and clear they are attainable and near. So if you want to be financially free how much money exactly do you need to have coming in passively each month.

Here’s an example:

If your monthly bills are as follows: (I know this is not a reflection of most peoples bills. But its an oversimplified example)

Mortgage $1250

Utilities $239

Groceries $250

Car payment $249

Gas $100

Total monthly Commitment: $2,088

So your financial freedom is actually $2,088. If you can build a passive income stream that replaces whatever you a re doing to get to $2,088 then you have achieved your financial freedom.

Naturally this is oversimplified. And of course, your financial freedom number will change based on your needs and situation. Once you have achieved a passive income that covers your necessary obligations you are financially free. The next step is to move onwards up to financial abundance which is something that is rarely discussed. Financial freedom is important – but financial abundance is where life really begins to change.

More on this later…

By the way, knowing your financial freedom number is just the beginning. Knowing how to get there is where things really get interesting. If you’d like to come out to one of our events near you go to http://www.MillionaireTrainingSystems.com

Money – Why you need to prepare now more than ever before!

Why you need to prepare now more than ever before!

By Douglas Vermeeren CEO of The Millionaire Training Systems & Maximum Results

Are you financially prepared?

Are you financially prepared?

Every morning I start my day by checking the news to see what’s going on in the world.  As a general rule the news is pretty negative and often times even exaggerates that negativity just to get our attention. This morning I found a story that was very interesting to me, not just because of the shock value of the content, but because the content was terribly true.

I have actually seen the subject matter manifest itself many times before me when working with those who come to my training programs. I’m glad they come because they can get help but many of them are arriving too late.  The name of the article was ‘Why Millennials may never retire.” Are you going to be ready to retire? Nicole Goodkind of the Daily Ticker/Yahoo Finance doesn’t think so and for the most part I agree.

According to her research those born between 1980 and 2000 may never be able to experience retirement. She states that, “The generation that came of age in the tech boom of 1990s but graduated from college into one of the worst recessions our nation has ever seen is left behind financially.” It is true that they are behind. Youth that are emerging into the working markets now are finding it very difficult to find jobs that pay high enough to meet their financial requirements. The median debt for students upon graduation is $23,000 and it is estimated that more than 7 million college grads are on a path to default on those loans.

Goodkind also cited a recent study by Nerd Wallet that estimates these same college graduates will not be able to retire until age 73. That’s 12 years later than the current national average age of 61.

These shifts in our economy do not only effect the millennials. I have seen first hand through those I have met that many over 40 are also struggling to prepare for retirement. They have no savings, no investments no retirement strategy. They too may be on track to work well into their mid-70’s, if they can retire at all.

Will you be included in this group? What can you do to avoid falling into the trap of being unprepared?  Here are a few suggestions that will help you begin to get prepared so that you can leave the herd that will very soon find themselves unprepared.

1)Start thinking about it

Too many people think that things will just sort themselves out. They don’t feel that they need to think about money, retirement or even get prepared. It’s like the fairytale story of the grasshopper and the ant. For those who are not familiar with the story the skinny goes like this: The grasshopper plays all summer while the ant is working hard to stockpile food and supplies to prepare for the winter. The winter comes and the ant is prepared and the grasshopper is not. Too often people live their life like the grasshopper. They know that they have to prepare for the future but they keep putting it off thinking they will have time to catch up later. Summer draws to a close and the winter creeps up and they are not prepared.  You can’t escape the future by pretending it doesn’t exist. It is coming and while I am not a doom and gloom type of person I warn very strongly that it’s easier to prepare now than try and catch up later. A future situation will not go away by pretending it’s not coming or by not thinking about it. Start thinking about it now and preparation will be easier.

When should you start thinking about it?  Naturally the earlier the better. It’s also true that the earlier the easier.  It’s also true that the earlier you start preparing for your financial freedom the sooner it will arrive. Although this article has spoken a lot about the term retirement that’s not the goal as I see it. the goal is financial freedom and that can arrive at nearly any age and is not tied to the concept of retirement in my mind. The old saying is true, “If you play now, you pay later with interest. If you pay now you get to play later with interest.” Now is the time to start acting smart with your money.

2)Look at where you are

Most people don’t know what their current situation looks like. This is the first step to know what your future can look like. While I not strict about keeping an exact budget it is important to know what your income and expenses look like. Naturally there may be unforeseen expenses but the closer you can get to identifying your current situation is the more likely it is that you will begin to recognize what’s really going on with your money. (More about why this is important below under the heading money strategist.)

3)Look at where you want to be

If you don’t know where you are now chances are you really don’t have a good idea on where you want to be financially in the next few years. Often when I ask people questions about their financial future they share ambiguous statements like, “I want to be rich.” or “I want to be financially free.” But most people have no idea what that really means or looks like. If you can’t describe it you can’t attain it. A goal that is specific and clear becomes attainable and near. What do you want your lifestyle to be now and when you retire? Or what does financial freedom look like to you? Get specific if you can so that you have a target. I recognize that this may change but if you begin with a target you have something to recognize whether you are on the way.

What does your financial future look like?

What does your financial future look like?

4)Become a money strategist versus a money manager

This is the point that is the most important. A money manager is what most people have been trained to be. A money manager is reactive. They get their paycheck and then go about the task of making that paycheck fit the bills they have. When they get to the end of paying their bills they feel successful. At the end their may be $100 or $200 and because they feel like the goal has been met that $100 or $200 becomes what they call ‘disposable income.’ Disposable means to throw away and that’s exactly what most people do with their money. A money strategist is different and has different goals. A strategist is not react – they are proactive. They plan for the future and their goal is not to match a paycheck to expenses. Their objective is to pay the bills but also to build a better financial future. When they have that extra $100 or $200 left after paying the bills they use it further their future income in some way. Often it goes into an investment or a mechanism to generate more money for the future. remember the saying pay now to play later with interest. This is that principle in action.

There are many things you can do to prepare for financial future right now. But the biggest and most important principle is to do something. even something small done regularly has the power to change your situation dramatically. Don’t wait. Get prepared. Your financial future is awaiting you and financial freedom can be yours quicker than you may have imagined.
